May Day Amid the crash of falling bleachers, the blare of tape recorded music, and the snafu of May pole dancing, the volcano WisenHueke glared down on South Pa- cific Holiday. Friday was highlighted by the crowning of the new May Queen, Marty Anderson, by last year's Queen, Nancy Nalepa. Also on Friday Slippery Rock saw its first tennis court dance. The festivities reached their peak at the gala dance on Saturday. Complete with leis, the dance more than made up for the mis- takes on Friday. The weekend was brought to a close with a tea in the North Hall court on Sunday. Ley?-Queen of May, Miss Marty Anderson Below-May Pole Dance? In an afternoon matinee, high school groups from this area discovered the versatility of the U. S. Navy Band. That evening, the band again demonstrated that charac- teristic to a capacity college audience. The unusualness of the program with its Her- ald Trumpets and the English Post Horn, as well as a display of musical ability, pro- vided the students with another of the fine assembly programs of this year. Tennis is enjoyed by the average student who takes to the courts between gym classes, tennis team practice, and meals. Picnics replace meals for many during this spring season. For you the student, it has been a year ofpersonal development. You have attended classes, met new people, and tried new ideasg there have been times ofjoy and times of despair. As a re- sult of these experiences growth has taken place. You have journeyed some distance along the road to becoming a teacher. Some of you, having gone as far as this institution will permit, will soon be full- fiedged teachers. This does not mean that your growth should stopg rather it should bejust beginning. In addition to individual progress there has been progress on an institutional scale. Slippery Rock State Teachers College is advancing and progressing. This past year buildings began to take shape before our eyes. Construction was begun on front campus for an auditorium, a new men's dormitory is emerging behind the Grillg a field house, a new class-room building, three new dormitories, and a library annex may be expected in the near future. Also on the increase is Slippery Rock's enrollment. In 1957-58 the enrollment was 1,0355 this year it has reached I,I69Q by 1960-61 it is expected to reach I,325. It is conceivable that by 1970 the enrollment may total 2,ooo or more. The members of this year's graduating class can look back at their individual accomplishments with pride. As alumni, they will be able to look at their Alma Mater with even greater pride. They will see a new Slippery Rock, a Slippery Rock which affords greater oppor- tunities for more students. They will see a truly progressive institu- tion of higher learning. Q. v T i' 1 , ' w I' W: ll V. Q 'B 1 1 t sim i. ' l i H K U . Fr N ...Y .u , .Mfg , ' ' S. A Q' ' ' 0 1 5. Freshman class meetings were called by Tribunal and the usual ribbing of frosh prevailed, generally speaking, everyone had a good time. But as the days went by and the signs and dinks became a little ragged, controversies came to the fore as in yearr past. Tribunal clamped down in their ob- servation of regulations, whereas fresh- men let up-ar in yearr past. But the frosh chose to ignore a vital issue when they made a poor attendance showing at their Homecoming stunt rehearsal. In the morning hours of any typical weekday, time is taken out to do a washing, iron, or to clean cluttered rooms. With the completion of classes in the afternoon, the dorm is turned into a social center to the chagrin of those people who take a mid-day nap. During the din- ner hour a quietness, which is broken by early evening phone and company calls, settles over the dormitory. Beginning at 8:30 noise is kept to a minimum to en- courage studying and quietness permeates the dormitory. At 10:30 the BR's are filled with girls chattering over the even- ing, visits are made from room to room, and an evening snack is enjoyed. Gum- my puts an end to all the noise for the day and the girls make the usual trip to the lounges to get in a bit of last-minute studying. Athletics provide a mode of relaxation and a means of attaining and maintaining a high degree of physical fitness. A wide range of activity is offered at Slippery Rock. Competition is available for all in- terested girls in a variety of individual, dual and team sports. Archery, bowling, swimming, golf and gymnastics are exam- ples of individual sports. Tennis, fencing, badminton, and ping pong represent the dual sports. Team sports include Held hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball. Athletics are valuable in the formation of ideals. Leadership, cooperation, and fair play evolve through the fellowship of athletic participation. Slippery Rock provides an activity for every interest so that each girl may parti- cipate and thus grow physically, socially, emotionally, and culturally. Dramatic Productions The Speech Department is directly re- sponsible for the presentation of several plays to the entire student body and fac- ulty. This year three plays, The Rain- maker , Antigone , and Stage Door were presented. All performances were masterfully directed by Dr. C. T. Matson, head of the Speech Department. The Masquers Club works in close as- sociation with the Speech Department in all theatrical productions. Masquer mem- bers make up the actors, are responsible for ushering, and build the scenery. It is a requirement of the club that each mem- ber do some phase of work on all produc- tions. Many long hours of rehearsal are spent before the curtain is raised for the first presentation. The plays are given for three consecutive evenings. After the final performance a great transformation takes place. The players are no longer the serious stars of the stage, but a group of happy, smiling individuals, well pleased that they have given a good performance. This is also the night to cele- brate.
