SLIPPERY ROCK, PENNSYLVANIA The goal of modem yearbooks is lo record the everyday happenings of student activity through the medium of photography. The 1958 Saxigena has strived to a-chieve this goal. It is the student’s history—a storehouse filled with living experiences —a future reminder of near-forgotten memories and dreams too often discarded. mm r A i r t yy ■ ’ i Student Life ■ 1 Activities Athletics APR 23 2001 Classes Administration 3 ... Games Activities, and Classes... In fall our world is exciting; There’s entertainment of all kinds: Games, activities, and classes To occupy our minds. 4 To freshmen registration is confusing; To the faculty it is quite amusing; To upperclassmen the task is dismaying. Because it is so darned delaying. All spic and span and looking fine The Frosh went through reception line. The teachers smiled with no regret, But soon forgot just whom they met! 5 One fine night in autumn weather North Hall sisters got together. Up at the hut they laughed and played 'Til the campus rocked with noise they made. The food was good, and fun was shared By each Twig and Branch so gaily paired. 6 Freshmen were welcomed traditionally With dinks and signs and a bell-scrubbing spree. Up at the hut new friends were made As everyone danced to the records they ployed. Bermudas were the style that Saturday night. And knobby knees were hidden from sight. Finally books took the place of all this fun, And the Frosh settled down to the task to be done. First there as you Then, I met you, Introduced he to thee, Arid then we were thr« took you Home W Not knowing our doom Arid (next thing we kne' All eight Had the flu. I and my roommates He and His too All from thee - - -Flu Bug flee! 9 ... and Her Court Po f Queen Ruth Catherwood, Marclo Caiazza, Jon Blankenbeker, Quean Kitty Jacob, Nancy Rut-kowiki At Maltby you'll find books galore, And study there consumes some time; But thoughts can change and hopes may soar As “She” talks to you with looks sublime. A date with “Her” makes your heart so gay As hand in hand “She walks with you. Books are forgotten or tossed away. And dreaming of “Her is all you can do. 12 As long os the students are all eyes and ears These student teachers have nothing to fear. Student Teaching Just the raise of a hand if there is a problem And the teacher arrives to help pupils solv'em. With atoms and Sputniks and Mutniks galore These young scientists have a great future in store. Lessons to plan, no time for fun A student teacher's work is never done. 13 Fall Delight V-Club Dance Committees Tickets Ralph Ascione Decorations Jack Jarvie Clean-up Frank Yenca General Chairman John Wilcher (below) 15 Wandering Rocket Ripplen Officers President Vice President Secretary-Treasurer Emy Lou Hogan Mary Ann Young Sue Evans ✓ Around the world on a sightseeing tour We go with our ticket and our brochure To Austria, India, France, and Japan Through the routines as fast as they can. From the blue-bells of Scotland to the can-can of France They not only swim, but often they dance. Hordly a ripple on the water is seen Whether one in a number or seventeen. When in the winter snow does fly, And frolics in our hearts do lie, A season comes of basketball And memories of the Christmas Ball. 18 The fellows all rush to prepare for their date Hoping on hope that they won't be too late. A glance at the news; then a date at North Hall, And after 10:30 there's Swing Shift” for all. 19 After daily classes and the washings are done. There are sights to be seen as the work’s begun. Some turn the pages in rapid succession, While others just settle for a card playing session. 20 Spaghetti fled and the dancers sped While all around the laughter spread. Our survival depends on the instruction of those gifted in the sciences; some of you in your teaching will be building bulwarks to keep us safe. To you, the members of the graduating class, this book makes an especial appeal. May the values developed here be adhered to in this changing world, aiding you to select those that are the highest and helping you to be successful in your chosen profession. Norman N. Weisenfluh 119 Dean of Instruction DR. HAROLD T. WIEAND Seldom, if ever, has our democratic society stood in greater need of well prepared teachers who have courage and vision. If we are to successfully meet the challenges of the coming decades, we must have teachers in our classrooms who will give more than lip-service to freedom of speech and press, who will succeed in developing to the full the capabilities of their students, and who will, above all, be able to discern the peril as well as the promise in mass conformity. Those who are searching for a significant career need look no further than the profession which you are now ready to enter. Harold T. Wieand MR. ARCHIE DOODS, Director of Student Teaching and Placement 121 MR. ROBERT LOWRY, Oean of Admissions Dean of Women Teaching is a great trusteeship—the debt eternal of each generation to the new life which must take its place. To no one is given the privilege of living forever, of having unlimited opportunities of righting wrongs, of doing good, of making the world a better place in which to live. Teaching does offer many opportunities to serve, to guide, to lift. Not to seize these opportunities is not to fulfill our trusteeship. Lois J. Harner Graduation is finally here. Undoubtedly you will view this event with mixed emotions. The hut dances, eight o'clock classes, noisy dorms, pep rallies, all are behind you now. It is my hope that you will always be proud of the ROCK” and that we who stay here will always be proud of you. Best of luck in the future. Dean of Men 122 Ray Evans College Faculty WAITER 0. ALBERT.
