 There is no other college like The Rock. I con hardly wait until I get back, said a serviceman in a recent letter to me. Slippery Rock's greatest asset is that growing group of loyal alumni who sing her praises wherever they go. You will soon join their ranks. We confidently expect from you such skilled performance, devotion to duty, and pride in the profession of teaching that everyone will say to his neighbor: There is another Slippery Rock graduate. Dr. Dole W. Houk President of tho College 8 To the Class of '56 The dialogue between Hamlet and Polonius reminds us of the teacher who has no mind of his own. Do you see that cloud that's almost in shape like a camel? By the mass, and it's like a camel, indeed. Methinks it is like a weasel. It is backed like a weasel. Or a whale?” Very much like a whale. Psalm 32:8 reminds us of the teacher whose mind is a frozen asset— Be not as a horse or as a mule which have no understanding. Neither of the above type of teachers would knowingly go out on a limb— where the fruit is. Between the stubborn and the wishy-washy are teachers with initiative. Some call it gumption. May those whom this book honors become teachers of gumption, sold on our American system of self-reliance and free enterprise, never seeking to prove a point, or merely agree, but seeking only to find the truth.
