FOREWORD To the Class of 1 956: The hello” tradition is an intangible, yet vital, part of the life on our campus. A friendly smile and a hearty hello warms the hearts of the students as well as the visitors to the Rock. The realization that friendliness is an important part of education makes this tradition more meaningful. The ability of a teacher to smile determines to a large degree the success of his career. The Saxigena Staff has endeavored to illustrate the way in which this friendly atmosphere permeates our campus. May you, the Class of 1956, carry the spirit of this tradition into your respective teaching fields. Before looking into the future, cast a glance at past memories, keeping in mind the hello tradition as expressed by the...... SEATED—louito Woodling, Scerolory lo ho President of tho College; Henrietta Kratzort; Marion Foster Smith, Secretory-Treasurer; Zillah K. Shremp; William H. Compbell, President. STANDING—W. Lee Gilmore; Robert J. Heosley, Vice-presidonl; Ralph D. Horsman; N. Kerr Thompson; Dole W. Hook, President of tho College. Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees of Slippery Rock State Teachers College is a policy-making body concerned with the formulation of measures involving the welfare of the college and the approval of recommendations made by the administration. Two members of the Board are residents of Slippery Rock, Mrs. Zillah Kerr Shremp and N. Kerr Thompson. The former is extremely active in church and community affairs and is a zealous worker for the Butler County Association for the Blind. Coach Thompson, as he is familiarly known, served as head coach of Rocket football and basketball teams for thirty years. Dr. W. Lee Gilmore, now retired and living in Oakmont, is a former Superintendent of Schools in that town. Dr. Ralph D. Horsman, a Slippery Rock graduate, is Superintendent of Schools in Mt. Lebanon. Mrs. Marian Foster Smith of Saxonburg, secretary-treasurer of the Board, is active in civic affairs in addition to being a lecturer and poet of some note. Mr. William C. Campbell, president of the Board, was formerly Mayor of Butler, and he has a vital interest in the competitive sports program of the college. Mrs. Henrietta Kratzerf, of Monaco, is an active leader in civic and social affairs in Beaver County. Robert J. Heasley, of Zelienople, well-known as banker, farmer, and civic leader, is vice-president of the Board. 4 as expressed by the. ADMINISTRATION 0 President Dean of Instruction Dean of Women Deans of Men Directors of Laboratory School Teachers Supervisors k Dr. Dole W. Houk President of tho College 8 To the Class of '56 The dialogue between Hamlet and Polonius reminds us of the teacher who has no mind of his own. Do you see that cloud that's almost in shape like a camel? By the mass, and it's like a camel, indeed. Methinks it is like a weasel. It is backed like a weasel. Or a whale?” Very much like a whale. Psalm 32:8 reminds us of the teacher whose mind is a frozen asset— Be not as a horse or as a mule which have no understanding. Neither of the above type of teachers would knowingly go out on a limb— where the fruit is. Between the stubborn and the wishy-washy are teachers with initiative. Some call it gumption. May those whom this book honors become teachers of gumption, sold on our American system of self-reliance and free enterprise, never seeking to prove a point, or merely agree, but seeking only to find the truth. Dale W. Houk, President There is no other college like The Rock. I con hardly wait until I get back, said a serviceman in a recent letter to me. Slippery Rock's greatest asset is that growing group of loyal alumni who sing her praises wherever they go. You will soon join their ranks. We confidently expect from you such skilled performance, devotion to duty, and pride in the profession of teaching that everyone will say to his neighbor: There is another Slippery Rock graduate. Best wishes to the Class of 1956. Leonard S. Duncan Dean of Instruction Dr. Leonard S. Duncan Doan of Instruction 9 mu Mils Lob J. Homer, Doan o Women Mr. John R. Eilor, Doan of Men Mr. H.
