VVe Want to especially dedicate it to all the freedom that America offers to us-the freedom of press, free- dom of religion, freedom of speech, and all those other invaluable rights set up by the forefathers of our country. VVe are now seeing in other countries how all the wonderful freedoms that we have here are denied to them. VVhen we think of the war-torn lands that are in the grasp of Hitler. we can appreciate even more the American way of living. In dedicating our book we want to also think of the brave men who are giving up everything to offer their services to this great land of America. Without this great force our land would be no longer free to build to a larger extent toward our ideal. With these thoughts in mind we now dedicate our- selves to the making of our book. 4 Faculty MR. HENRY-fthe coach of Sligo High, has just completed a better than average season. It wasn't long before we elected our class officers, and they were: President .......................,...,...........,... ..,.. M adeline Evanek Vice President .....,......... .....,...... ....... ....,........ R o b ert Grimm Secretary-Treasurer ..........................,..,................,.,... Bob Callen For the library play, One Mad Night, Miss Myers selected six students of the Junior Class-Fernanda Ginepro, Lois McElravy, Cliff Johnston, Leon Shook, Robert Grimm, and Madeline Evanek. Several of the Juniors are in the Rifle Club, and four of them-Madeline Evanek, Agnes Burns, Bob Callen, and Hunter Craig-won a prominent place on the Rifie Team. We did not participate much in Sports, as we only had two members on the Bas- ketball Teams. Lois McElravy was on the Girls' Basketball team, and Richard Cole was on the Boys' team. Norma McKee and June McFarland were the cheer-leaders and helped to cheer the teams on during the past Basketball Season. The Juniors are very active in the musical departments, Chorus and Band. The members from our class in the Chorus are: June McFarland, Matilda Phillips, Carolyn Dunlap, Norma McKee, Lois McElravy, Leon Shook, Vincent Myers, and Robert Grimm. A large part of the band is composed of the Juniors: Hunter Craig, Bob Callen, Carl Wassum, Vincent Myers, June McFarland, Marilda Phillips, Dick Cole, Clarence Shook, Leon Shook, and Robert Grimm. 1 As for activities we have only had one. not too successful skating party. How- ever, we are eagerly planning a dance on April 17 and the Junior-Senior Prom on May 1. Sophomore Class History On September 2, 1941, forty-four boisterous girls and boys, proud of being Sopho- mores, entered Room 5. However, the number has now changed to forty. Soon after the beginning of school, we chose' the following class officers: President .,.............................................,........,............... Dick Silves Vice President .,..... .... R obert Courson Secretary ............. ....... R ussell Henry Treasurer ......,.............................................,................. Roy Slater Having now reached the exalted level of Sophomores, we felt quite important and spent much time razing Freshmen. From our standpoint the Freshmen Reception was definitely a success. We are all justly proud of Dean Henry, who was chosen as one of the cast for the library play, 'iOne Mad Night. Nine members of our class are in the band: Dean Henry, Jack Barto, Robert Fisher, Deane Curll, Dick Silves, Lois Burns, Mildred Greenawalt, Anna Lou Shoup, and Joan Lobaugh. By next year we all hope to see the two baton-twirling members of our class, Lucille Kunselman and Evelyn McCall, marching ahead of the band. ' Manylof our class are marksmen in the Rifle Club, and one Sharpshooter, Dick Silves, is on the Rifle Team. Three Sophomore girls are cheerleaders: Lois Burns, Joan Lobaugh, and Eliza- beth Craig. All these girls received letters. The Honor Roll shows some Sophomore names, several of which have appeared there every period. Judging from our assem- bly program we have dancers, singers, musicians, and actors on the class roll. The Chorus also has some Sophomore members. Last, but not least, are our boys on the basketball sguad. There are six of these: Wilbur Hartle, Roy Slater, James Harkless, Bob Courson, Raymond Lobaugh, and Russell Henry, all of whom received letters. We're looking forward to a successful season next year, and so, boys, don't let us down. ' 16 Freshman Class History Fifty-two Freshmen entered Sligo High School on September 2, 1941. Since then five have left and several more have come from other schools. Class officers chosen were as follows: President ..l.... .... R ichard Rhea Vice President ..... ...,. G eorge Love Secretary ........ ........ A rline Sayers Treasurer ..................................v......................l.. James Bashline The following girls went out for basketball: Betty Gutherie, Dorothy Henry, Janet Wiant, Imogene Davis, Norene Elliott, and Janet Snyder, all of which received letters. The boys on the basketball team were: Dean Courson, Keith Meier, and Russell Morris. They also received letters. The Freshmen who are in the band are Josie Ann Hartman, Henrietta Craig, and Ralph McCall, Clarinets, and Richard Rhea, Saxaphone. Janet Snyder replaced Gust Magrini at the base drum toward the end of the year. A Freshman Reception was held by the Sophomores on September 15th. The Freshmen had charge of three assemblies throughout the year. There are quite a few of our class in the Glee Club and Richard Rhea and Edward Hasenplug are on the Rifle Team. On March 13, 1942, the Freshman held a. farewell party for Mr. Bowser. We were all sorry to see him leave, as he was liked by all. 17 l i Eighth Grade Top row-Earl Fagley, Robert Duncan, Charles Price, Dean Simpson, Paul Henry. They walked off with the Clar- ion County Championship, losing only one county game. They started out as seven bashful sophomores and planned on winning the championship. During the period of two years they lost three of their team. Matrimony called to two of them and the other quit on account of illness. Lois McElravy, only a Junior, filled in and was a great help. We could never have gotten along without her. Meriam Courson had the most points -having 123 to her credit. Lois McEl- ravy was next runner up with 77. The Freshmen were inexperienced but helped us accomplish our aim. Meriam Courson, Betty Morris, Lois McElravy, Virginia Shoup, and Jennie Simpson will receive gold basketballs. All the other girls received letters. Boys' Athletics BASKETBALL Despite the fact that our schedule this year consisted of larger, more ex- perienced teams, the S. H. S. boys made a fair showing. The lack of experience and scarcity of material are drawbacks which cannot easily be overlooked. We feel confident, however, that in future games S. H. S. wil be more victorious. School letters were awarded to Keith Meier, Roy Slater, Russell Morris, Jim Harkless, Raymond Lobaugh, Russell Henry, Dean Courson, Bob Courson, Wilbur Hartle, Ronald Snyder, Bill El- liott, and Warren Slater, Russell Morris was high scorer with 96 points. Bill Elliott and Ronald Snyder were selected to represent Sligo in the Clarion County All-Star game. The efficient and well- liked manager, Bob Harkless, also re- ceived a letter. Sligo has a future to look forward to, and so let's all support that basketball team. ' Music is one of the line arts that tend to develop the aesthetic in every person. During the past year the music department under the leadership of our new teachers, Miss Parker and Mr. Beveridge, has been very enter- taining and prosperous. At the beginning of the year, the band was composed of 22 members but now consists of 32. The band had one street concert. marched for a political campaign. played for the basketball games. and had two general band conf certs. all of which was enjoyed by large and appreciative audiences. We are happy to report that one of our members, Hunter Craig, played in the All District Bandf, held at Kittanning. The chorus, during the past year, has made a fine beginning. It has not done as many sel.ections as it would liked to have done but it has managed to cover a variety of numbers, doing them all quite well. i In December the chorus gave a concert consisting of Christmas carols, and other sacred pieces. At the present Miss Parker and Mr. Beveridge are planning a joint con- cert. lt will consist of pieces with the chorus and band together and then selections by the band and chorus separately. 24, CHORUS Top row+Ellen Mae Sayers, June Dunlap, Vern McCall, Fern Cyphert, Jane Hess, Jim McKinney, Jim Shook, Bob Grimm, Bob Fisher, Edwin Minnick, Leon Shook, Jack Barto, Hope Horner, Lucille Kunselman, Kathleen Miller, Gladys Linamen, Elenor Holliday, Henrietta Craig. We started the term out with the regular Freshmen Reception, at which we were entertained at the expense of the Freshmen. Our basktball games this year also kept us in suspense. The girls won the county championship, and the boys, while they didn't come out leading furnished us some very good games. The players were encouraged in the game by the co-operation of the Cheerleaders. The musical section of our school has been kept quite busy. The band and the chorus have each held a concert. In the spring they are planning a joint concert which we are all looking forward to. Along with the musical department is coming our young Majorette Class. The Home Economics class served the school with lunches most every Tuesday during the second semester. These were greatly appreciated by the entire school. We have had many enjoyable dances sponsored by the Senior Class, Rifle Club, and the Chorus. The Juniors are planning for one later in the term and, of course, every one is waiting for the Junior-Senior Prom which is planned to be held May 1. The library play One Mad Night, under the direction of Miss Myers was held on October 10. In all respects it was successful. The Senior play is to be held on April 24. Another school party held in March was the farewell party for Mr. Bowser. All the school was very sorry to have him leave, and we wish him the best of luck in his new business. We had the Clarion College Chorus for an assembly concert late in the winter. The other programs were supplied by the teachers with the support of all the students. Our Rifle Team won a good name for itself during the year by winning District F Championship of P. I. A. A. Along with shooting many postal matches, the team made a delightful trip to Oakmont, competing with nineteen other teams and winning over Class B and C. When we look over the year, we see that, as a whole, it has been quite enjoyable, but it will be even more so as Commencement and Baccalaureate services come around. 28 Home Economics Standing-Jennie Simpson, Virginia Shoup, Mary Barger, Lois Spare, Alma Magrini, Jane Hess, Meriam Courson, Gertrude Lobaugh, Betty Morris, Margaret Barger, Fern Myers, Hope Horner, Marion McKinney, June Dunlap, Vern McCall.
