DEDICATION Another school year is rapidly reaching its com- pletion. To all the fruits of their labor are evident. The passing years have brought satisfaction and regrets. We cannot undo the past but it should serve as a guiding force in helping us to plan our future. Into the 'life of every student comes the influence of many teachers which will continue year after year in sometimes from generation to generation. To such a teacher, Mr. Gallagher, we dedicate the 1941 THE BLACK DIAMOND. A lively interest was manifested in the girls' basketball this season. Their playing as a whole was very good, so good in fact that they tied for the Clarion County Championship with Clarion, both teams losing only two games. It was through the co-operation of the coach and the players that these games were won. The squad was made up of 13 players consisting of seven guards and six forwards, three of which, Helen McCall, Doris Chandler, and Betty Callen. received gold basketballs. Letters were granted to Virginia Shoup, Iennie Simpson, Peggy Nelson. Betty Morris, Leona Iohnson. Vem McCall, Meriam Courson, Lois McE1ravy, and the manager, Faye Randolph. The other two players were Helen McKin- ney and Miriam McKinney. One senior, Doris Chandler, was chosen to take part in the all-star game. Helen McCall and Peggy Nelson were given honorable mention. The captain was Helen McCall, and Doris Chandler was co-captain of the squad. The girls' squad has been very successful this year and hopes to be even more so next year. BOYS' BASKETBALL The boys' basketball team was not very successful this year due to their small size. but Sligo has a very promising future in their Freshmen who take a hearty interest in this game. Those who received letters were: Clair Harkless, Ivan Brinker, Von Peter- son. Raymond Smith, Bill Elliott, Ronald Snyder, and Warren Slater. A gold basketball was awarded to Dean Meier, the captain-having received a letter the previous year. The team wishes to express their sincere thanks to Clifford Iohnston for his services in the management of the team. Cliff was also awarded a letter. The coach. Mr. Henry, has done his best to build up a good team and has planned a very good future. His material next year consists of Dick Cole, Dick Lobaugh. Ronald Snyder, Iames McKinney. Bill Elliott, Robert Fillgrove, Von Peterson and Warren Slater. Then, too, there are his seven ferocious freshmen who are very up and coming. Everybody is looking forward and depending on those freshmen, so, boys. it's up to you! nm: Hm. nears amen num sumzn CHEERLEADERS! This year a new activity was introduced to Sligo High. Good school spirit and activities. too. We'll touch on the high spots now for you. The basketball games have played an important part in this year's activities. The girls team acquitted itself very creditably and although the boys won fewer games they showed enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. The Pep Club xmder the leadership of the cheerleaders added zest to the games. In November the band members held a bazaar-a varied program of music. games. eats, handicraft displays. and dancing. At the present time the band members are planning and working to present a novelty program on May 2nd. There has been only one party during the year, the Freshmen Reception. but several dances have been held. one sponsord by th Alumni, one by the Rifle Club, and one by the Junior Class. However, among the coming events are the Senior dance in May, and the Iunior-Senior Prom. The home economics class during the latter part of the year has been serving lunches on Tuesdays. These lunches have been very successful as well as So far this year the only dramatic presentation has been the Cuckoo's Nest under the able direction ot Miss Myers, but the Senior play Cross My Heart under the direction of Miss Ofrazia will follow on May l6th. Every class has been well represented on the honor roll at every grading period. Also under scholastic activities, all Iuniors and Seniors were required to write American Legion Essays on the subject How We Can Best Build Morale In America. Then there have been skating parties, varied assembly programs, also occasional Friday aftemoon dancing. and then don't forget those daily 10 o'clock lunches-grapefruit, prunes. etc. As the school year draws to a close and as we in memory look back over the past year, we see that it has indeed been a busy but yet a happy one. Now. with Commencement activities and other events coming soon, the next few weeks promise to be even busier. FRONT ROW-Evelyn McKinney. Clayton Gween. Karle McKinney, Karl Wassum. That's what this peppy group did as soon as they entered the doors of Sligo High last fall. Nothing can sway our emotions as does music. It can make you laugh or make you cry. Since music is a very vital part of life, the band fumished music at all the basketball games and assembly programs to inspire our players and audience. Another class of entertainment was furnished by the Band last Novem- ber when the group put on a Band-Bazaar. This was attended by a large and appreciative audience who enjoyed every minute of it. 'l'he spirit of its thirty-four members is so rousing that success is very much within their reach. At present Mr. Sausser is planning another program by the band called Banzapoppin which we know will be another great success. BACK ROW-Betty Keister. Miriam McDowell. Margaret Barger.
