I-GI' I WW'W?WW THE BASKETBALL SEASON BOYS Sligo, although lacking in height, flnished a successful season, much to the surpri e of many, by putting on a final spurt and winning second place in the Clarion Elimination Tournament, which was held on the Clarion door and in which fourteen teams from three adjoining counties participated. The winning of three out of four of the games gave Sligo a total of fourteen wins out of a possible twenty-live for the year. The following were awarded gold basketballs: Ray Brinker, Dick Henry, Dana Logue, Eugene McCall, and Dick Slater. Letters were awarded to Craig Elliott, Paul McKee, and Merle Kline. Others were awarded numeral 39's. Craig Elliott was high scorer with 159 points and was closely followed by Dick Henry with 155 points. Dick Henry and Dana Logue were selected to represent Sligo in the Clarion County All- Star game. The best foul shooting record was held by Craig Elliott. The efficient and well-liked manager Jay McCall, also received a letter. Al- though the loss of uve seniors from the squad will weaken it, a successful season is anticipated for next year. GIRLS Very keen interest was manifested in the girls' basketball this season. As a whole the playing was of a very high quality. It was so high in fact that the Clarion County Championship was awarded to these energetic players. It was only through the cooperation of both coach and players that the games were won. Mrs. Logue, an outstanding supporter of the girls' squad, presented them with a magnificient gold trophy which is appreciated by the players. The Lioness squad lost four games by'a total of 12 points. Six Seniors, Betty Mathias, Violet Buzzard, Lois Johnston, Leona Divins, Anna Mae Myers, and Lois Rimer, having in previous years received letters, were presented gold basketballs. Faye Brinker, Dorothy Burns, Evelyn Burns, Helen McCall, Doris Chandler, and Elfa Magrini, our manager, received letters. The remaining players received numerals. Betty Mathias and Leona Divins were chosen to take part in the All- Star game. Violet Buzzard was elected captain for this season and Lois Jolmston was awarded a medal as the outstanding member of the squad. Betty Mathias led the team scoring 126 points. Eight players will be lost through graduation, but because of the reserve material we believe the gaps caused by their departure can be iilled and a good season forthcoming next year. lu 2 S! Skating parties have been prominent and, also, very successful this year in the school, as well as the season our basketball teams have had. The musical program of the school, under the able direction of Mr. Sausser, has been quite enjoyable and satisfactory. There has been much improvement in the glee club, band, and orchestra. There have only been three parties, the Freshman Reception, a Senior Party, and a Sophomore Hallowe'en Party, during the year. but the Junior-Senior Prom will be held in May. A good time can be expected, as there will be games and dancing for all who attend. There has been only one formal dance this year, sponsored by the Alumni Association in December. Several ideas have been introduced to promote dancing in the school, the most important one being dancing lessons given in the gym classes. Another one was public dances after the ball games. So far this year, the only dramatic presentation has been the Green Ghost, under the direction of Miss Myers, but the Senior play Cyclone Sally will soon follow. Many varied assembly pro- grams' have been presented during the year, the latest being in the form of chapel with a speaker. The honor roll, representing the intellectual leaders of the school, has been increasing steadily proved that the pupils are tak- ing a more active part in their work. Since we have had the opportunity of getting a home econo- mics teacher, there have been lunches served on Wednesdays of each week. They have been successful and very pleasing to the taste. Taking everything into consideration, I am sure we will all agree that Sligo High School has had a very active and pleasant 1939. THE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR: ROBERT J. Sausser, who received a Bachelor of Science Degree in music education at Lebanon Valley College. The music department plays a very vital part in our school life. Music helps to develop a taste for the higher, finer things of life, leading us into realms far above the turmoil and ordinary cares of the day. Nothing else can sway the emotions like music. It may sooth a tired spirit, or it may call a country to war. Any feeling on earth may be expressed and stimulated by music. That is the reason the band plays such an important part at basketball games, assemblies, and general gatherings of the stu- dent body and community. Its efforts to maintain the school and community spirit are greatly appreciated. The Sligo High School Band consists of thirty-eight well- trained members. There are twenty-five members in the glee club and the same number in the orchestra. The band and glee club have shown much improvement in the past few years, and we think they are just about the finest groups of their kind that can anywhere be found. The orchestra is quite far up the line, too, although it has just been organized this year. On January sixth of this year, the band gave a concert which was well attended by an appreciative audience. Selections rend- ered consisted of marches, overtures, and novelties. Dean Henry and Charles McElravy, two of our promising young musicians, presented solos in an engaging manner. At present Mr. Sausser is planning two more concerts which will complete this year's activities. From, past experience, we know each will be a rousing success. 5 ,A E ,Q f! 2 4 s A e 1 M ew i 4 15' 7 9 s if 5 E TE 3 55 Q . -. , Q A J A E r Q Dfw S 0997! 15 A 15 2? Nutrition and school lunches were the first subjects that were studied. The class was then divided into two groups, cooking and sewing. Every Wednesday the c-ooking group served a lunch to the students.- A tea in the form of kitchen shower was planned for the girls' mothers. Many useful gifts were received and are appreciated by all. A Christmas party was held before Christmas. The ,girls in- vited their mothers, the Senior boys, their mothers, and the teach- ers. At the beginning of the second semester the following officers were elected: - President ...............,.............. Lois Johnston ' Vice President .... Dorothy Richardson Secretary ......, ..... A nna Mae Myers Asst. Secretary .......,. Lois Rimer Treasurer .......,.... . . . . . . Violet Buzzard Asst. Treasurer ........................ Garnet Henry The class was divided again. Four weeks later everyone was in the same class and committees were appointed to serve each week. A home project was required of each girl. Forty-five hours was to be spent on it. School credit was given for satisfactorily completed work. Mrs. Goodfellow was the instructor. , Horton Rom. 1 In scholastic standing Sligo High School need not be ashamed to be compared with any other school in the county. Each period there have been many representatives from each class on the Honor Roll. To be on the Honor Roll pupils must have all A's or B's on their report cards. Pupils who have been on 'the Honor Roll each of the five periods this year are Lois Rimer and Beth Logue--Seniorsg and Raymond Ginepro and James Callen-Sophomores. Beth Logue has a straight A report card for every period of the school year. Another activity of a scholastic nature was the American Legion Essay Contest. Only members of the Junior and Senior classes participated. The subject was, The Eifect of Un-American Activity on Youth. Beth Logue's theme was chosen fr-om the Senior class and Eleanore Burns' from the Junior class to be sent in to compete with essays from other schools in the country. -a 1.
