GIRLS BASKETBALL NEWS The Slxdell gxrls basketball team started the 1948 1949 season wxth only four players who had lettered the year before These four players were Joye Fortenberry B1ll1e Fay Lang Anne McDan1el and Patrxcla W1nder The other players along w1th the coach were new The coach Robert Chrlstxan who came to us from North Texas State College worked d1l1gent1y to form a team whxch worked together for the teams benef1t W1th the a1d of the new mater1al at hand he flnally p1cked a mam squad consxstxng of Bessle Mae Harper B1ll1e Fay Lang and Part1c1a Wlnder as guards w1th Bern1ce Wxlson Jolene Shaw Olga Masch Eva J'o Moore W1ll1e Hardee as the1r xmmedlate understudxes The forwards were Joye Fortenberry Anne McDan1e1 Neta Reynolds Hattxe B Hardee Wxnnxfred Wh1tes1de and Edna Mae S1tZ The young players got off to a bad start because of nervousness and 1nexper1ence but by hard work and good coachlng the glrls SW1ft1y 1mproved by leaps and bounds to w1n second place 1n the d1str1ct tournament They defeated Alvoyd ln the f1rst game wxth the score bemng Z9 and 30 The second game wasn t as d1ff1cult beat1ng Rhome 13 to Z0 The fmal game was w1th Chxco and the g1rl were defeated by a score of 19 to Z5 Mr Chrxstman gave the g1r1s an 1nv1tat1ona1 tournament 1n wh1ch they won second place They were to play Brldgeport the flrst game but thls team d1d not show up so they rece1ved a forfext The second game was wxth Alvoyd wh1ch was rough and fast but the g1r1s came out ahead and ready to play 1n the fxnals The team met up Wxth Fr1sco who was last years state champxons and were defeated w1nn1ng second place 40 v . THE GRVYHOUNDS OF 1948 1949 Coach Manuel R lVlcCarroll started basketball 312112111635 with a group of boys who were comparatively small in stature as compared with those of previous years Only two men returned from the A squad of the year before These two mdivxduals were Walter Ashley and Charles Lynch Rondal Milligan and Jack Leake were left over from the B team and the remainder were comparatively new hands at this game of playing full fledged for S H S At times too nurnerous to mention the games seemed shaky but the battling bunch of runts have thus far pounded out Z7 wins against 5 losses 1n a total of 32 games to date Included among February llth and 12th Since the Greyhounds won all twelve con ference games and also the tournament there was no pl yoff to dec1de the representative at Dallas for February 26th SLIDELL GAINS BERTI-I IN STATE TOURNEY A well coached Slidell five won the Region 3 B basketball tournament Saturday and qualified for the state tournament in Austm March 3 4 5 The Greyhounds defeated Crawford 33 to 9 in the first game The second game was with Byers and S11de11 won this game by a score of 35 and 40 Slidell defeated Prar1e Valley 33 to Z3 mn the seml finals and downed Forreston 31 to 18 for the regional t1t1c Two of the boys made the all tournament team Walter Ashle y and Charles Lynch 41 the honors was the winning of the district tournament at Bridgeport
