'III 3 Q . . l ' ' ' , . , 3 wb X i ' I . , -- ' '. . 1. lf' 1' I-I MJ - ' 8 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Of our present Semor class nme were once bewxldered fxrst graders whom Mxss Bethel had to launch on publlc school careers These nme are Walter B11ly Moore Wmmfred B1ll1e Fay Anne Jolene Bermce Rondal and .Tohnme The other f1ve of us were 1n1t1ated to school 1n some other system Three years later when we were thxrd graders the twelve grade system became Texas law and that same year we were schooled 1n the Baptxst Church wh11e our present bu1ld1ng was be1ng constructed The next year some of us sklpped a grade some were left behlnd and some were added to our number so that when we graduated four years later 1nto hlgh school we conslsted of flfteen By that txme too we had safely survlved many unusual and embarrassmg 1nc1dents and had reahzed at long last that l1fe has more 1n store for us than such th1ngs as playxng housekeepmg xn what IS now the tenn1s courts Anne and Walter s dally exchange of rmgs Bern1ce and Lynch s shy court shlp wh1ch conslsted prxmarxly of glvxng each other Chrxstmas gxfts and Bern1ce and Jolene s contlnuous fuss over wh1ch one Jack would accompany to Jolene s party .Tust one more lesson had to be learned before we could become full fledged hlgh school students Th1s happened when we were 1n the elghth grade At thxs epoch we had a subsutute teacher who fa1led to apprec1ate our sense of humor and so sent us to Mr Sm1th s class There we were made to put our noses mn rmgs and stand all per1od before the Freslunan class Later we found ourselves ln Mr Smxth s offxce belng assxgned var1ous and certalnly numerous exerc1ses all prescrlbed by Mr Smlth Wlth that we ascended xnto the Freshman class As Freshmen we had a new Englxsh professor who had very red ha1r and whose face we never could see because of h1s feet be1ng on the desk and because of h1s stomach s protrudmg However we d1d learn a lxttle Engllsh Doubtless th1s resulted because of the fear he mstxlled 1n us Th1s year Mrs Rudd was our sponsor and somehow managed to t1de us over mto the Sophomore class As Sophomores we welcomed back Mr McCarroll from an army mstructmg pos1t1on to supermtend and to coach us And two from our mxdst Charles and Walter went to work ln earnest and won basketball suxts whxch they st11l earn the pr1v11ege of wearlng Gxrls thxs year also began to seek a place on the glrls team even though only three were successful and they earned a sub s su1t we all were very proud As Sophomores we had two new teachers Ray Mxlhgan and Mxss Yvonne Parton After just one year however Mlss Parton chose a husband 1n preference to us and Mlllxgan returned full tlme to the pulpxt and to the college classroom 9 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 . . The new ones were Neta Reynolds Kathleen Wilson Margie White Fern Stice and Bernice Wilson--all from Greenwood. In uun nun THE SHORT lm TALL LINDON SHERRY TONY HIGH LIGHTS OF THE YEAR Axrplane Tour Tram R1de After study1ng axrplanes and traxns durxng the early part of the year the fxrst and second grade chxldren were taken to Fort Worth where they actually saw the thmgs about whxch they had been studymg On the mormng of November 12th through the lundness of Mr and Mrs Johnny Schertz Mrs H E Long Mrs Fmas HICKETSOD and Mr and Mrs Otto Dxmxtt the ch1ldren were transported to Fort Worth by automobxle On arr1v1ng 1n the c1ty we went f1rst to the axrport where we ate lunch xn the Conference Room Then a representatlve came and we were taken on board a f1fty two passenger Amer1can Alrhner Here our gu1de explaxned everythlng about the plane from the radmant wall heatxng to Bables Axd As we left the plane each of us was g1ven a flxght packet Next we went to see the trams Here we were met by Mr Logan Cxty Passenger Representatmve who took charge of us We were shown through the Sam Houston Zephyr whxch had just arrxved from Houston Thxs tram affords the fmest passenger tram servlce between North and South Texas The b1g d1ese1 powered engme seemed to be of ch1ef mterest to the boys We went back to the stat1on where we boarded the Texas Zephyr for Decatur Mr Logan accompanyxng us We 1nvest1gated everythxng about th1s traxn Two thlngs of much 1nterest to the chlldren were how people eat and sleep on a tram The sleepmg matter was solved when a porter made a bed for them to see just how mt IS done Then we made our way to the dmer lounge where everyone ordered something to drxnk Soon the tram was pulhng mto Decatur We thanked Mr Logan for his kxndness and courtesy cl1mbed off the tra1n and hopped 1nto the automobxles Away we went back to Slxdell havmg spent a pleasant and prof1tab1e day 26 We stepped off the plane saying, What an ideal way to travel. GIRLS BASKETBALL NEWS The Slxdell gxrls basketball team started the 1948 1949 season wxth only four players who had lettered the year before These four players were Joye Fortenberry B1ll1e Fay Lang Anne McDan1el and Patrxcla W1nder The other players along w1th the coach were new The coach Robert Chrlstxan who came to us from North Texas State College worked d1l1gent1y to form a team whxch worked together for the teams benef1t W1th the a1d of the new mater1al at hand he flnally p1cked a mam squad consxstxng of Bessle Mae Harper B1ll1e Fay Lang and Part1c1a Wlnder as guards w1th Bern1ce Wxlson Jolene Shaw Olga Masch Eva J'o Moore W1ll1e Hardee as the1r xmmedlate understudxes The forwards were Joye Fortenberry Anne McDan1e1 Neta Reynolds Hattxe B Hardee Wxnnxfred Wh1tes1de and Edna Mae S1tZ The young players got off to a bad start because of nervousness and 1nexper1ence but by hard work and good coachlng the glrls SW1ft1y 1mproved by leaps and bounds to w1n second place 1n the d1str1ct tournament They defeated Alvoyd ln the f1rst game wxth the score bemng Z9 and 30 The second game wasn t as d1ff1cult beat1ng Rhome 13 to Z0 The fmal game was w1th Chxco and the g1rl were defeated by a score of 19 to Z5 Mr Chrxstman gave the g1r1s an 1nv1tat1ona1 tournament 1n wh1ch they won second place They were to play Brldgeport the flrst game but thls team d1d not show up so they rece1ved a forfext The second game was wxth Alvoyd wh1ch was rough and fast but the g1r1s came out ahead and ready to play 1n the fxnals The team met up Wxth Fr1sco who was last years state champxons and were defeated w1nn1ng second place 40 v . THE GRVYHOUNDS OF 1948 1949 Coach Manuel R lVlcCarroll started basketball 312112111635 with a group of boys who were comparatively small in stature as compared with those of previous years Only two men returned from the A squad of the year before These two mdivxduals were Walter Ashley and Charles Lynch Rondal Milligan and Jack Leake were left over from the B team and the remainder were comparatively new hands at this game of playing full fledged for S H S At times too nurnerous to mention the games seemed shaky but the battling bunch of runts have thus far pounded out Z7 wins against 5 losses 1n a total of 32 games to date Included among February llth and 12th Since the Greyhounds won all twelve con ference games and also the tournament there was no pl yoff to dec1de the representative at Dallas for February 26th SLIDELL GAINS BERTI-I IN STATE TOURNEY A well coached Slidell five won the Region 3 B basketball tournament Saturday and qualified for the state tournament in Austm March 3 4 5 The Greyhounds defeated Crawford 33 to 9 in the first game The second game was with Byers and S11de11 won this game by a score of 35 and 40 Slidell defeated Prar1e Valley 33 to Z3 mn the seml finals and downed Forreston 31 to 18 for the regional t1t1c Two of the boys made the all tournament team Walter Ashle y and Charles Lynch 41 the honors was the winning of the district tournament at Bridgeport fx 44 ..34LcfoLfmzf3fz 5414 fog 'uzflfgi WAX.
