= ! ' 1) AR 1 SSVI ) KI i ! , u ly Re ) ‘: nt Ma a. ‘ih Ls pees MAPA Pr Martin Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929, was cut down by a sniper's bullet on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 39 years old. Dr. King won his first major victory for the negro in Montgomery, Alabama where he organized and led the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. Hundreds of black people walked to work for more than a year to integrate seating on the buses. Martin Luther King, the apostle of peace , went on to become the country's best known civil rights leader. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and donated the prize money to the civil rights movement. Early in 1965, Dr. King went to Selma, Alabama, to make it easier for the Negroes there to register to vote. He organized a march to Montgomery, which was 10 miles away. When the marchers reached YON Selma, the march was broken up by club swinging police. Two days later Dr. King called a new march to Selma. This attempt ended peacefully with Dr. King personally leading the way. Reverend King had many personal accomplishments. He received a Ph. D. degree from Boston Univer- sity in 1953. He was pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama; co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia; president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. King was on the board of trustees at Moorehouse College from which he received his A.B. degree in 1948. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, was Time magazine ''Man of the Year'' and received many awards from religious and civic groups. Dr. King had a philosophy of non-violence and love. He greatly admired Gandhi, the orginator of non- violence, who won independence for India. He believed peaceful resistance was the only way to overcome racial intolerance. Martin Luther King went to Memphis in March to help striking sanitation workers. After his death, the city of Memphis settled with the workers feeling it was a high price to pay . Dr. King said, If a man has nothing that is worth dying for, he is not fit to live. It's not how long you live, but how well. ' Martin Luther King's legacy was love. He may be physically dead, but his spirit will never die.
