QS X slggf - lll llwell zlqlllct lg lg Although many people have wished many things upon the graduating class, the blessings of one man will always remain in our minds. Four years ago, we were his first class at Slatington High. He often handed out advice to other people, but he always fol- lowed the advice himself. For example, his advice to the senior class was, To live happily you must have an unquenchable desire to give of yourself-to be unselfish. Even though he was a new teacher, he jumped right into the middle of many school ac- tivities: football, student coun- cil, the talent show, curriculum and faculty committees, and our class. He put a little bit of him- self into every aspect of high school life. He did not do this for the personal glory because much of his work received little or no credit. Maybe he did it because he cares about the stu- dent body, maybe he did it be- cause he cares for each person as an individual, more than just a part of the system. Because this teacher began his years at SHS with us and grew side by side with usp because he unselfishly gave of himself, be- cause he cares for every individ- ual in our class, we, as the class of 1978, wanted to show him our deep gratitude. And the most appropriate thing we can do is to dedicate our yearbook, our lifelong collection of high school memories and happiness, to him, Mr. David Papay. il, lx DAILY Name K Lunch IQCIAE XX TUESDAY 5 a N .3 UPENING OPENING 4 X 3 ISE8 XERQESES I Q Q5 wiv 'Q W' JF' 5 wiogwv 5 1 SUBJECT ' ' Q X Y' gigf' ' '9 K. Although they participated in competitions, concerts, and a television tap- ing, their performance here at SHS during the Talent Show left an impression on every student, for they proved that their music was not all that terrible. Their long hours of practice paid off when the students gave them a warm reception. Making a two-year tradition out of stu- dent-written Christmas musicals, Debbie Peters wrote and directed the 1977 edi- tion, A Children's Christmas. With Mike Peters arranging piano accompaniments to the songs and Colleen Peters helping with sound effects and directing, children played by Cathy Roth, Suzette Nanovic, Greg Shiner, Kevin Beers, Tanya Evans, and Tammy Parsons came to understand the meaning of Christmas with the help of some other friends. .I nuns- -i-1-,- 11 -U -i 1 -r --.1 -'mic' vs Laurie Loch, Angie Schlei- -H x Pulling through a season that went a little quicker than many band members would have liked, the concert band came together to learn scales, breathing, and counting tech- niques. Although many members grumbled through warmups and exercises, most were relieved when director George Fennell de- cided not to keep a practice chart for every member. This learning really paid off when the band took their talents to an East Strouds- burg concert band competition, receiving a good rating in concert performance and an excellent in sightreading. Many Slatington musicians were sent to County Band: Colleen Peters, Heather Mac- Crindle, lane Smith, Debbie Peters, Lori Clause, and Michael Peters. One, Debbie Peters, went a step further, to Districts. The spring concert, a night of sadness and joy for the band, ended with a tribute to the de- parting seniors, and awards presentation that included several new awards: each senior re- ceived a desk set, Roger Bauer, a US Marine Corps Music Award, lohn Meckes, the Eckert Brothers Music Award, Debbie Peters, the john Philip Sousa Award, and jane Smith, the Clark Eckhart Memorial scholarship. The band ended its short year by playing the traditional graduation songs for their gradu- ating bandmembers as well as the other high school graduates. - , V A chance to get out of class, a chance to let off some steam, a chance to get up some steam, a chance to show off your twirling skills, or just a chance to show off! Pep rallies represent all these things for SHS students. Pep rallies can mean Larry Williams and Terry lacobs in full Indian regalia for the Lehighton game, or they can mean Cindy Bahyak in diapers, but most of all, pep rallies give students a chance to feel carefree, and still show they care about their school. The Welcome Back to School Dance had to be postponed for a football game, the keys to the book- store were lost, the Homecoming pa- rade started without the sophomore float, and the magazine campaign fell short. Through all of the disappoint- ments, student council kept working. They represented our school at the first annual What's Happening competi- tion sponsored by the Palmerton Area layCee's5 they hosted Student Forum in the month of january, and the Talent Fashion Show brought out some new talents of the students. Overall, the 1977-1978 student council mixed good times with disappointments, working hard through both. E3 X :,-'.. ..' CU A 4 . 31:3 ,L -' Q v.. I.. 1 1 . , .. .. Rx .., .53 'if li . I really learned a lot during my stay here in Slatington, and I had alot of fun- especially watching the football and basketball games. I congratulate all the winning teams, and I am proud that I was a Bulldog during your winning year. I also enjoyed being in the musical, youth choir, and chorus, for it helped me to understand music better. Coming from an exclusively girls' school to a coed school was a big difference, since I wasn't used to school life with boys. It wasn't as hard to adjust as I thought, however, because everybody made me feel at home. Most of all, I would like to thank all my foster families and friends for helping me get involved in all the activities that made me understand American life better. The only part that made me feel miserable was during the graduation night because that was the last day that I saw all the seniors together. I know this year made me more mature and I'll never forget this year as it becomes a happy memory for me. 1 ' ' iii 4 l l L I, I I ' 'P l i X7 V ll l I l, With three League championships, in cross country, track, and basket- ball, in one year, SHS can certainly say with pride that we are a cham- pionship school. But there are so many other unmentionned teams and people in the school who are equally victorious because they l reached personal goals that they had set for themselves, such as beating one certain team, or outdoing only one person, or even just doing your very best. SHS owes credit to all these winners who worked hard for Bulldog glory. V' ir it 'hai-r '1 ' 'mr 'All . you 1. It's not one of our space cadets- it's a government model. 2. A though the tradition of Class Day began on Iune 7, 1978, with tears, the sadness quickly changed to smiles and laughs as the underclassmen, faculty, and guests joined seniors in remembering their years at SHS. Skits fondly recalled the excite- ment in ninth grade biology class, the mis- haps of a tenth grade carwash, the magic of the junior prom, and the mysteries of the faculty room. Everyone listened to dis- cover if their guesses had come true for class favorites and if they had been left anything in the Last Will and Testament, then things grew more solemn as awards were presented and speeches were made. Many people were thanked, among them secretaries Janice Merkel and Betty Parry, principal and assistant principal Robert Labdik and Lynn Solt, and class advisers Frank Carazo and Dave Papay. Suddenly it was over, seniors reluctantly left their seats and the auditorium, reflecting on the meaningful words of the class song, Free- bird, and their memories and dreams. r l' I l H ' Wcluoe QY'm 04 aa cz Md new , lp y u l 1 On june 12,1978,160 high l l school seniors, amid deep y breaths and hesitant steps, 1 ended their high school years. Thinking of sad fare- wells and shaky futures, the seniors prayed along with Reverend Kunz and listened to the valedictorian and sa- , lutatorian speeches of Wal- , lace Minnich and Debra H Peters. I Remembering personal happiness and sor- + rows of high school, 160 soon-to-be-free Cand actually nervousl young men and wom- en walked forward to recieve their diplomas, those small cards that allow students to proudly enter the world, ready for whatever awaits them. As these 160 cautiously turned their tassels in a singular motion, the class once again be- came a single unit, united in its last efforts, and after the 160 mortarboards landed crazi- ly on the ground, the magical solemnity of 1 the service was broken by graduates and stu- I dents and families and friends rushing to 1 1 meet with each other. l 'I 1 l A l L........ s - W iw f 4:1 -lil V Yi f -lr , 1. 1 ,v Zan!
