Mr. Roberts was born March 14, 1925, to John and Martha Roberts of 304 Williams Street, Slatington. As a youngster, he attended the Roosevelt Elementary School, and it was here in the sixth grade that he received his lasting nickname, TRUCK, because it was said he ran “like an old ice truck.” In high school he served as president of the 1942 graduating class and was also elected “best-natured, most popular, and class comedian.” As a sportsman he earned his letters in bas- ketball and football, actively participating in each for four years. His yearbook listed his hobby as fishing and to this day he is an avid fisherman and spends hours tying flies. Between graduation from high school and enrollment in college, Truck served three years in the U.S. Navy, He married his high school sweetheart, Marie “Mick” Neff, on November 25, 1948. Beginning at Ursinus then transfer- ring to Kutztown, Mr. Roberts received his teaching certificate from Kutztown State Col- lege in 1950. On November 6, 1954, his first child, Linda Jane, was born; and on June 29, 1958, he welcomed his son, John Michael. Graduate courses at Lehigh University fur- thered his education and in 1970 he received his Master’s Degree from Muhlenberg College. After his graduation front Kutztown, Truck returned to Slatington, where he became a ju- nior-high history teacher. His popularity with his students was instantaneous. He was a friend. They could relate to this man who was honest, dedicated, and sincere. His “gift for gab”, sharp wit, and subtle humor sparked an interest in history for hundreds of students who attended his classes. Word of his ability to captivate an audience soon spread farther than the classroom and he became a popular public speaker. Not only did he speak to teach and entertain, but also he spoke to serve his community. He spoke many years as a Slatington borough councilman. Al- ways interested in community affairs, he also helped to initiate the Slatington Library. We, the Slatington High School Qass of 1974, are proud to honor Mr. Owen “Truck” Roberts, “our man for all reasons.” 0} CLASS OF ’77 FRESHMAN-CLASS OFFICERS: Kathy Jones ... Who had the original idea we don’t really know; the result, however, was a Japanese garden in the center court of our S.H.S. building. Remember that barren spot? Well, now it has a rock garden that is pleasing to the eye and which will improve as the years go by and future students work on it. Are you sure that’s just water in that bottle?” The Bulldog crowd cheers our team on to the final victory over Pal- mer ton. 65 SHS SONGBIRDS 66 Our tuneful songbirds at S.H.S. are directed by Mr. George Fennell. Cheryl Roth was one of the many soloists who contributed their talents to the annual spring concert. Mr. Fennell congratulates Geoffrey Hughes after his solo, “Ole Man River.” Sheila Evert, Monique Rex, and Sally Pfeiffer sing “Killing Me Softly.” Participants in one of the performances are Kim Kem- merer, Dave Overholt, Linda Serfass, Cindy Harwi, Pat Roland, and Karen Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Fennell receive a gift from the song- sters. The chorus sang many Christmas songs during the Christmas concert, including the favorite, “Little Gray Donkey.” Santa Claus (alias Mr. Fen- nell, hurries to get into costume. Some girls from the chorus, portraying reindeers, pull Santa Claus as they sing “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.” Slatington’s chorus presents the evening Christmas program. “OLIVER” Ya have ta do a song-and-dance routine just ta get some food in this crummy joint.” Dave Fister is the everyday funeral director. ‘‘I’ll drink to that! ’ sings Cheryl Roth. That daring devil himself, Mr. Bumble (Larry Williams). “Who took the jewels? says Jeff Hughes as Fagin. 68 Singing “I’d Do Anything,” Cheryl Roth and Cathy Sneidman present a lively and entertaining scene in the Thieves’ Kitchen. Fagin, alias Geoff Hughes, instructs his pupils in the delicate art of picking pockets. Mr. Brownlow, Mike Fister, and Mr. Grim wig, Charlie Horner, discuss the predicament of OLIVER. Our evil villain, Bill Sykes, ex- pertly portrayed by Steve Trol- linger, sneers and torments everyone in sight. For the finale, the thieves give us a round of “Food, Glorious Food.” Carlene Rauch and Trudi Kelchner as street vendors cry out “Who Will Buy?” Bill Sykes in one of his less agreeable moods lashes out at Ricky Meckes. Sneering and leering, Bill Sykes sings the song “My Name,” and reveals why everyone should fear him. Widow Corney, played by Tina Wassum, discovers the secret of OLIVER’S birth from the dying Old Sally, portrayed by Kim Werley. SENIOR PLAY The cast picture of “The Spiral Staircase” re- veals the seniors who participated in the play: D. David Overholt, Doug Shiner, Cathy Sneid- man, Karen Williams, Jeff Jones, Geoffrey Hughes, Tina Wassum, and Kim Werley. Under Mrs. Roeder’s capable direction, Tins Wassum and the rest of the cast prepared for the premiere. D. David Overholt excellently characterized the bumbling, country constable. Dr. Parry, portrayed by Jeff Jones, and Helen, played by Cathy Sneidman, stare helplessly at the feeble Mrs. Warren, who is acted by Tina Wassum. Mute Helen, Cathy Sneidman, wrinkles her nose in distaste as Mrs. Oates, Kim Werley, obviously enjoys her brandy. Jeff Jones played the sincere and warm- hearted Dr. Parry, who was Helen’s love interest in the play. Dr. Parry comforts Helen with the prospect of recovering her voice. The cast shows their appreciation to their director, Mrs. Edith Roeder. Geoffrey Hughes portrays the cold and calculating Professor Warren. Helen, Cathy Sneidman, frantically tries to call for help, but to no avail. Stephen Rice, played by Doug Shiner, plays a “friendly game of checkers with Nurse Barker. Nurse Barker, Karen Williams, pensively awaits her next move. LET US ENTERTAIN YOU Slatington’s version of Geraldine, it’s really Larry Williams. Who said they could only cheer?? The Barber-Shop Quartette brings back many memories. “I’m so glad it’s all over!” Today Slatington-Tomorrow the Midnight Special! Colorful Colorguards do an original routine to “Super Fly.” Kathy Jones keeps the Talent-fashion show rolling with her tumbling act. Dave and Tom provide the music for the Magic Act. Jodi Roberts dazzles everyone with her tap-dancing routine. The senior football players present their version of the Schaeffer commercial. TRACK AND FIELD DAY : 1974 “It looks like a close race!” Larry Lauchnor sets a new school record in the two-mile run. The girls compete in the 50-yard-dash time trials. Larry Lauchnor attempts to pass Jack Huddleston in the two-mile run. TO RUSSIA, WITH LOVE “Did you say you were a secret This is Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Is this a Victory monument? STREAKING! Streaking Editorial This is the S.H.S. newsroom bringing you the bare facts and factual news. We’ve just this moment received a report from Coward Hosell on the latest sports event of the century. Hundreds of students have flung off their clothes and are proceeding to run past astonished bystanders. Streakers, as they call themselves, have been spotted driving through in- tersections on motorcycles, riding bareback on horses, and even parachuting out of airplanes. By and large streaking de- pends upon the weather and the humor of the police. Police are now on the scene. Although some streakers have been arrested and fined, most policemen have turned the other cheek. NEWSFLASH: It seems as if streaking is not only a sport of the young. In Ohio a 67 year old man and his 46 year old lady-friend were arrested for “snailing.” But for now, there seems to be no “end” in sight! 76 PHOTOGRAPHS OF otf iU,,ud WUKLU SUMMARY '(lfcL hl'richman and 3 ot s impaneled for have gas Nixon agrees to pt trouble 1 back taxes Nunn ' on, BrZT J[ren(rfh„. nev v to ‘ 1E-UPHALT Agnew Resig l1'0 House 'I'™ Segment' ')jVlict ■vru-” )(l , w sid( OUR WORLD atricia NICK DELONG WINS “B” HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE Coaches Sadler and Snell beam with pride at their State Champ, Nick Delong. W-BURG THE RESTORED A typical rustic scene in Williamsburg. ‘ l‘ H __ Christiana Campbell’s Tavern was a favorite spot for meals during our Wil- liamsburg stay. One of the loveliest buildings in Williamsburg is the governor’s palace with its marble floors, its expensive furnishings, and beautiful gardens. ABOVE: The ever-present examples of colonial life. BELOW: Another restored colonial home in Williamsburg. Linda Serfass, Barb Hewitt, Tina Wassum, and Dawn Bisko take a short rest along the way. 158 “Well, Robert, it’s a fine mess you’ve gotten us into this time!” This is one of the modern accommodations used by the seniors on the class trip. S.H.S.’s holy man leads his followers onto the Paths of Waywardness. “Oh, no, girls! Look what’s coming into the pool!” Ricky Blose is “Doing his thing” in Williamsburg. “Hanging out” at the pool are Joe Shimko, Larry Loch, Ron Jones, and Dave Kunkle. ONE STEP FURTHER O 160 “Boy! It surely is hot!” “Who said I wouldn’t graduate??” A serious moment at Slatington High School. Well, we finally made it!” The class solemnly absorbs the wise words of Major General John R. Kern, Jr. Mr. George Fennell directs the commencement chorus in ‘The Halls of Ivy.” BACCALAUREATE “Packed up all our cares and woe! The Reverend David H. Mrs. Anna Parry was honored by the School Board for 42 years of service in Northern Lehigh School District. Mr. Labdik presents certificates to the top five students in the Vocational- Technical Curriculum. Dawn Gogel receives her hard- earned diploma. School Board President, Woodrow T. Searfass, presents Geoff Hughes with his diploma. 163 The Slatington High School Band plays the processional march at Commencement exercises.
