1971: AN EARTH ODYSSEY SLATINGTON HIGH SCHOOL SLATINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA Since we are completing our final year at SHS, we glance back into our recent past. During most of our school years, we have been vicariously adventuring through the eyes, ears, and experiences of others. Now, launching ourselves forward, we are at last setting our own personal and individual goals. As freshmen, we began the process of learning just how many responsibilities would be ours during our SHS odyssey. In our sophomore year, we learned how to solve problems and resort to qualitative thinking. Our junior year, with its declamation contest, prom, and play, was a busy one as viewed from the angles of successful industry and cultural interest. Now, as seniors, we realize that our high school years have been the most vital ones in preparing us for our future adventure into life our Earth Odyssey. Class of '71. TABLE OF CONTENTS SPORTS Page 74 ADVERTISEMENTS Page 148 We, the Class of 1971, dedicate our yearbook to Sara Ellen Miller, whose guidance, understanding, and patience have helped many high school students throughout the years. A graduate of Slatington High School, Miss Miller has lived in Slatington almost all of her life. After graduation, she received her A.B. Degree from Wilson College in 1942, and in 1967 she was awarded a master’s degree in German at Kent State University. Her teaching experience includes several years at Konnarock Lutheran School in Vir- ginia. From 1957 to the present she has taught German and Latin at SHS. We will always remember Miss Miller for her willingness. As a friend her attention and sympathy are never ending. As a teacher, her efforts know no bounds. As a worker in community and church affairs her willing hand reaches out to all. To us, one of her greatest contributions is serving as advisor of REFLECTIONS 1971. We, therefore, dedicate a small part of our four years at Slatington High School to Miss Sara Miller. Megan Jones, a trapped invalid, listens in ter- ror as two men plot her murder over the telephone. This year’s Junior Declamation Contest boasted a major change from previous years: for the first time the eight participants were allowed indi- vidual costumes, props, and lighting. Speech coach this year was Class Ad- viser, Miss Linda Haldaman. First place winners were: Dawn Jordan, for her humorous speech, “Slumber On,” and Robert Grosch for his self-written dramatic presentation, “A Matter of Principle.” Second-place winners were Laurie Peters for her dramatic “Crim- son Rambler” and Keith Semmel for his humorous “The Chicken Heart.” Dawn Jordan, a teenager burdened with father problems, describes the results of her slumber party. Janice Semmel explains the feelings of a lit- tle girl in an orphanage toward a picture of the “Christ Baby.” Colleen Shoemaker is a precocious child, fond of blackmailing her brother and mak- ing inappropriate remarks. 37 JUNIOR BEAUTY CAPTURED IN Susan Anthony escorted by Thomas Harding Barbara Hughes escorted by Richard Jones. They are (left to right): Rod Lobach, Richard Siegmund, David Gower, Mr. David Clemmer, Adviser; Brian Geiger, and Irvin Distler. 65 The students of Slatington High School presented the long-running Broadway musical “My Fair Lady” on April 16 and 17, 1971. This is the first time students of all grades and teach- ers of all departments in the high school have cooperated on a successful venture. Approximately seven months were spent on the production which excelled in acting, scenery, chorus, costumes, and dancing. Robert Grosch (upper left) por- trayed Professor Henry Higgins; and Lynne Warfel (upper right) was the gutter-snipe, Eliza Doolittle, who be- came a model of perfect acting and speaking. The other leading roles were filled by Keith Semmel, Alfie Doolit- tle; Rick Eckhart, Colonel Pickering; Cathy Sneidman, Mrs. Pierce; and Rick Valagene, Freddy Eynsford-hill. The entire production was backed by a company of forty singers and dancers under the direction of Mr. George Lesh. Mrs. Edith Roeder acted as dramat- ics director who was responsible for the fine acting. Rick Eckhart headed a group of talented students who built an embassy ballroom, Covent Gardens, and a study which were part of seven- teen scene changes. Miss Dixie Driscoll, Home Econom- ics teacher, led her classes in the pro- duction of the most beautiful cos- tumes ever seen on the Slatington stage. Mr. Lloyd Williams devoted many hours to teaching willing stu- dents the complicated dance steps. A large part of the success was due to our fine student director, Jeff Kern. Jeff, our one-man orchestra, helped Mr. Lesh rehearse the chorus and gave up study periods for months to ac- company the soloists. Mrs. Roeder de- pended on Jeffs excellent advice and was always glad for his good sugges- tions. The business students, under direc- tion of Mr. William Horvath, obtained advertising funds, made programs, and conducted advance sale of tickets. 66 SHS GYMNASTS SHOW THEIR SKILLS Above Center- Richard Jones vaults over the horse. The Dramatics Club, under the capable supervision of Mrs. Edith Roeder, meets every first and third Monday. Its purpose is to acquaint members with basic principles of the theater, teach make-up technique, explain con- cepts of staging and lighting, and help them express themselves more effectively. This year the Club per- formed Dickens, “A Christmas Carol” at the annual Christmas Choral Concert and also before the student body in assembly. The cast included Robert Grosch as Scrooge, Keith Semmel as Bob Cratchit, and Cathy Sen- idman as Tiny Tim. Cindy Borbacs served as narrator, while Jackie Barney portrayed Mrs. Crat- chit; Keith Semmel, Bob Cratchit; and Cathy Sneidman. Tiny Tim.
