SLATINGTON HIGH SCHOOL SLATINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA J 9 6 5 FOREWORD The 1964-65 World’s Fair is a culmination of the progress gained throughout the past years. Before it was built, there had to be ex- tensive planning — planning for the present and the future. A site had to be chosen, the ground had to be broken, then the building began. For years, our lives have been planned in much the same way. We have been supplied with the facilities needed to make our four years enjoyable and worthwhile, yet we are not merely concerned with this minute. We are being prepared for the future. DEDICATION MR. WILLIAM REESE We have reached the end of our high school career. We have met the challenge and achieved our goal — graduation. We are ready to prove the future as prosperous as the past. With a firm hand and unfailing patience, Mr. Reese has guided our class through the initial years — the planning years of our lives. His help and advice had enabled us to solve class and personal problems. His warm smile and witty remarks have proven to be high points in our years at S.H.S. Whatever the future holds for us, we, the Class of 1965, are forever grateful to him and therefore dedicate our work, “Reflections,” to Mr. William Reese — advisor, educator, and friend. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 6 UNDERCLASSMEN 18 ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS 38 SENIORS 78 ADVERTISEMENTS 137 SENIOR DIRECTORY 157 Advisor Editor-in-Chief Associate Editors Art-Layout Literary Advertising Production Photography Miss Angela Durso Marcia Kreitz Pamela Thomas Patricia Thomas Janice Snyder Juliann Ole wine Bruce Benninger ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY A president, a board of commissioners, a staff of construction engineers, all combine their talents and know-how to produce the fin- ished product, the 1964-65 World’s Fair. SCHOOL BOARD IN MEMORIAM MR. HERBERT KERN Mr. Herbert Kern, a loyal member of our school board, gave freely of his time and talents in formulating poli- cies for the betterment of S.H.S. MR. HERMAN P. SNYDER i I Always eager to help, whether in an academic or social way, our supervising principal, Mr. Snyder, guides our class’s destiny. This is not a new experience for Mr. Snyder. For the past 31 years, he has been molding the minds of students — first as a teacher, then as an adminis- trator. We feel that he has given our class something uniquely special. Therefore, it is only fitting that in our yearbook, the culminative effort of our years in high school, that we thank this man who has made those years rewarding and enjoy- able for all of us. 9 MR. GORDON KEMP After only one year as principal, Mr. Kemp has proven to be an efficient and affable director of our pavillion. Mr. Kemp, a graduate of Berwick High School, furthered his education at Bloomsburg State College. He received his Master’s Degree at Lehigh University. His hobbies include bowling, reading and doing handicrafts in wood. We, the Seniors of Slatington High School, are grateful to Mr. Kemp for providing us with invaluable guidance through our most important high school year. 10 MR. JAY P. HAGENBUCH A familiar face at Slatington High School is our assistant principal, Mr. Jay P. Hagenbuch. Mr. Hagenbuch is always seen with a smile as he constantly performs his many duties at Slatington High School. Our assistant principal, a graduate of Bloomsburg Normal School and a recipient of a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Penn State, utilizes his spare time by fishing and by working around his trailer. We, as seniors, owe our thanks and express our appreciation to Mr. Hagenbuch. It was he who prepared us as seventh and eighth graders to face the ever-increasing demands of Slatington High School. Thanks again, Mr. Hagenbuch. 11 OFFICE STAFF Mrs. Betty Parry — secretary to Mr. Kemp; Mrs. Marie Deibert — secretary to Miss Williams; Mrs. Margaret Owens — switchboard operator; Mrs. Ellen Dietrich — payroll clerk; and Miss Williams get together for a friendly chat. UNDERCLASSMEN As the visitors enter the gates of the Fair for the very first time, they become over- whelmed with the enormity and variety of ex- hibits. Looks of bewilderment pass among the crowd as they know not where to begin their tour. As they make their way along the avenues of exhibits, the visitors find them- selves confronted with the problem of where to look first for the interest and knowledge which surrounds them. Likened to the Fair visitors, the underclassmen find themselves in a similar situation. No one is more bewildered than the Freshmen, as they plod their way through that first harrowing week. Each classroom and book opens the door to the vast number of pathways to knowledge. But only the students themselves can open their minds to receive this knowledge. CLASS OF ’68 The class advisors are Mr. Marvin Miller and Mrs. Edith Roedcr. This year we welcomed a refresh- ing, energetic group of new faces to Slatington High School. We chal- lenged the freshmen with the difficult chore of adjusting to the more respon- sible life of senior high students and of living up to the traditions of previous classes. They have exhibited a willing- ness to work and a determination to persevere. We wish them all the luck in the world, and we hope they will continue their good work throughout high school. The competent freshmen officers — James Horvath, President; Anita Jones, Vice President; Sarah Kern, Secretary; and Paula Barney, Treas- urer — are capably advised by Mr. Marvin Miller and Mrs. Edith Roeder. Their class motto is “The keys of knowledge open the door to the fu- ture.-’ The class flower is a white rose. The class colors are green and gold. ROW 1: L. J. Mantz, D. Roderick. ROW’ 2: C. Entering the field, the boys begin their warming up exercises. A few team members get together to run through a new play, and the Seniors loosen up with calisthenics. The offensive team lines up for some practice before leaving the field for their last minute instructions. The game begins; the Slaters provide plenty of action. After the team wisely used a valuable time-out to build spirit and a will to win, a determined Slater fights for an opponent’s fumble late in the game. A look at the new scoreboard shows the results of hard practice as our team wins its first game on Alumni Field. SENIORS By the end of his visit to the Fair, each guest has been exposed to a little of the cul- ture from all parts of the world, and he cannot help but think of all the new knowledge he has acquired. He must take time now to assimilate the facts; and if possible, to apply some of his new-found knowledge to his daily life. Like the visitors on their way home from the Fair, the Seniors find themselves with num- erous facts, ideas, philoso- phies, and ideals. Now, the time has come for each of them to step into the world and fit all the pieces of knowledge together, so that this knowledge will lend itself to making life richer and fuller. IN MEMORIAM LARRY LEWIS His every action was highlighted by a spark of kindness, congeniality and the wonderful gift of being a true friend to all. Zellner THOUGHT WE’D NEVER MAKE IT! Mike seems to have forgotten what bus he came on. After a peaceful night, the boys are wide awake and eager to see the Capitol. Five newly elected senators enter the Capitol in time to at- tend an important Cabinet meeting. Everyone is anxiously awaiting breakfast. The entire class was greatly impressed by the changing the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. of 156 SENIOR DIRECTORY Andrews, Kenneth Robert 1093 Main Street, Emerald Varsity “S” Club 2.3; Math Club 3; Football 1,2; Baseball 1,2,3.
