(3) all that is experienced by an individual during his existence . . . Webster Dictionary Life is a silhouette. It has an origin and a destiny. It reflects all of its encounters but exists of its own mat- ter. Life bursts into existence like the dawning of spring and bows gra- ciously out like the crestfallen autumn. Life is . . . Pride and Unity for some things and . . . looking at the world through your own point of view for other things. . . . having peace within if not without. 7 . . . trying to escape reality. Tears and fears and feeling proud. To say I love you right out loud. Dreams and schemes and circus crowds. I've looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange. They shake their heads, they say I've changed. But something’s lost but something's gained. In living ev’ry day. I've looked at life from both sides now. From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall; I really don't know life at all. — Joni Mitchell Vj Vjt 9 Life is. . . 10 . . . being 1 and knowing it. L 11 . . . carrying someone else's load. Mrs. Nita Burks, '74 Dedicafee Life Is ... being a Skyline counselor. It is dedicating your life to help aim other lives in the right direction. Being a concerned counselor is not just an eight to four job. It involves taking your job home, not leaving it at the doorsteps but finding a special place to work out a solution to each problem you have encountered during the day. Being a Skyline counselor is f knowing each of your students individually and realizing that a student is not a numberl It is keeping your head together while listening to a frantic student. Being a Skyline counselor is £ enriching the lives of many students through your love and sacrifice. This is life for Nita Burks. 13 . . . checking out a new scene. ■ MbN . . . full of disguises. . . . giving a smile. 7 . . . up, sharing someone else’s problems, doing your own thing, being a senior '75, getting up before sunrise, going to class, doing your homework, taking care of your own business, being responsible, having an afro, find- ing a date, skipping class, down, being a senior '76, getting caught, nothing but a thing, not having your assign- ment, Nixonized, joy, being blond, victory, never missing a day out of school, being someone else, being brown sugar, coming in at sunrise, being irresponsible, defeat, getting rid of someone, having a love jones, being your- self, something, and SENIOR '7411! Life is everything; whether you like or not. . . AND THKTJs WO OVUb Life to a teacher is an unending challenge to influence others in a positive way. By imparting knowledge, enthusiasm, and concern, a teacher touches the lives of his students. Certainly, life is rewarding when a teacher sees that a student is thinking and considering the ideas which are pres- ented to him. Life for a teacher is definitely a challenge. — Judy Yarbro 16 17 While a student at Skyline, your days were filled with school bells, chalk dust, history, math, sports, and throwing bubble gum into the wastebasket. But when each of you finish school, you will at that moment start out on another great adventure . . . be it college or the world of work. It could be an adventure that might carry you across oceans or across town. Perhaps an adventure or life of com- plete happiness, or one which includes wars, trag- edy, and sorrow. When you leave school you will learn that education is what you have after you have forgotten the facts. The few years that you have been with us, we trust you have learned that for every scoundrel there is a hero, for every enemy there is a friend, that every nickel earned is of far more value than a dollar found, and you will know that men and women of other nations and races have hopes, fears, and ambitions which are not so different from our own. To you who care enough to ask where the best opportunities for the future lie, we must answer quickly, “They exist within people themselves. ” FRANK GUZICK, Principal Administrative Team GENE F. As editor-in-chief of Reflections he has fostered brotherhood among the students at Skyline. His leadership in plan- ning and promoting the City Government Day enabled many Seniors to learn more about their civic duties and responsibilities. John's self-deter- mination and motivation are proven by his work with the City Planning Department as a part of the Man His Environment curriculum. John bal- ances his serious concern with public affairs with a deep love of music. A gentleman, a musician, a humanitarian, and a warm friend, John Clinchy's versatility is an example to all. Elizabeth Cottingham Elizabeth has been an outstanding representa- tive of Skyline in many respects. Debi has served Skyline in her quiet, persistent manner as Art and Creativity editor of Reflections and through her speech and debate activities. Debi has shared her writing skills through the activities of the CDC English Cluster. Her personal drive has helped her produce over 600 original poems. Many of these she shares with Skyline students who read Reflections and Fragments, the literary magazine. Debi’s deep devotion to her fellow man can best be communicated through the words of one of her own poems, Everyone’s out for himself and not anyone else, except for a few dreamers who’ll find it’s a hard road they chose — but it’s worth it to be one of those.” 68 Anthony Joiner Anthony Joiner, a talented actor, has brought rec- ognition to Skyline through his participation in many speech and debate tournaments. The one who did have the nerve to take on the job was Jelletta Turner. For two years Jel- letta has snapped photos, written captions, filed pictures, settled arguments, and nursed head- aches in the course of publishing the yearbook. In her spare time she won duet acting tro- phies, maintained a high scholastic average, and participated in Junior Achievement. For Jelletta, Life is . . . Skyline. She has also given a lot of serious consideration to whether or not she wants to choose a career in fashion merchandising. She is truly using her cluster experience as career exploration. The personality of Delores Rich- ardson — known as Dee to her friends — can be described by all these terms and more. At Skyline, Dee has been involved by being a cheerleader, a student senator, on the girls' bas- ketball team, and also represented Skyline as the Homecoming queen during her Senior year. She also sang with the Ebony Choir during Black History Week this year. Not only is she active in extracurricular fields, but she plans to be a doc- tor in bacteriology, studying in the Science Clus- ter. Delores has certainly been a credit to Sky- line. Sallie Sampsell The warmth and friendliness of Sallie Sampsell makes her a joy to know. She is always cheerful and has a personal greeting for every person she sees. Sallie's interests are divided among several creative endeavors. She finds every opportunity available to develop her writing tal- ents — she is a member of Reflections, the Pub, the Origin, Fragments, and the English-Journal- ism cluster. Sallie’s musical talents are appreci- ated by the Skyline music groups as well as the Westminster Youth Choir of Oak Cliff Presbyte- rian Church. For those who know Sallie, a day is not complete without her happy hello and Who's Who would not be complete without honoring her. 82 Patricia Smith Patricia Smith is an energetic, hard-working stu- dent at Skyline. She is a member of Skyline’s Tel- evision Arts Cluster, where she has shown to be a conscientious and enthusiastic student. She is also a member of Skyline's Marching band, the ORIGIN staff, and the Pub Staff. Patricia's quick smile, enthusiasm, and talent have made her a valuable addition to Skyline. Vanessa Agnew If there’s one word to sum up Vanessa — she's involved. Vanessa has been a member of Sky- line's Silhouettes, FTA, National Honor Society, Student Senate, was named to Who’s Who Among High School Students, and a finalist in the National Merit Scholarships Competition. She was also an organizer and participant on the Black History Week. Her involvement extends out into the community where she is active in several organizations which participate in helping needy families and educating disad- vantaged students. She is an active, vivacious student who has certainly earned her place in Skyline's yearbook — the who’s who. 83 Sharon Sprinkel Bubbly and helpful are two of the best words used to describe Sharon Sprinkel. She has been a member of the Silhouettes for the past two years. Sharon also participates in various Young Life activities. She is helpful both to friends and to those she does not know. Sharon is one of the outstanding tour guides of Skyline Center. With the personality she has, it is easy to see why Sharon was selected for Who’s Who. John Talley John Talley has a fine attitude toward life. He simply works to the fullest extent of his capabili- ties. John is in the architecture cluster and has been doing outstanding work. He is also a mem- ber of Skyline’s varsity Football team. Talented, dedicated, and a respected member of Skyline's senior class, John will surely go far in life. 84 Peter Boecher When Peter Boecher sees a thing that needs to be done, he does it, and does it well. A Library Student Assistant, he also helps train new stu- dents for work in the library. An active partici- pant in the German Club, Peter is a German folk dancer. He also is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and OEA. Peter is a good example of the Skyline spirit, always ready to do any job well. Danny Anderson Danny Anderson cares about people. That is why he takes the time to be a manager for the football team. He is also in the Architecture Clus- ter, and from all indications, his future as an architect is very bright. Danny's attitude of con- cern both for his work and for other people will take him far in life. 85 David Session The artistic ability of David Session has enabled him to be noted as one of the outstanding students in the Architec- ture cluster. David serves as parliamentarian for the Archi- tecture Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, and is a member of the Spanish Club. In a world of growth and progress, David’s talent will surely lead him to a success- ful career. Russell Bromley Two words sum up Russel Bromley: active and involved. Since transferring to Skyline from White in his junior year. Rusty has been associated with numerous events at Sky- line. As president of the German club, he has made it one of the most active clubs in school. He also participates in Key Club and National Honor Society. Rusty is also involved in the community as a volunteer at Children s Medical Center, and a past president of Dallas Red Cross Youth. Academically oriented. Rusty is a member of the Advanced Science Cluster, and there is little doubt that Russel Bromley has made numerous contributions to Sky- line. 86 Jane Steed Jane Steed’s musical talents have brought great joy and entertainment to many Skyline audiences. Jane has always been willing to accompany any group or individ- ual and her great talent is often in demand. Her interests are not confined to music, however. Jane was a valuable member of the Origin staff reserving precious moments of her music practice time to help produce the yearbook. In addition she was a member of the Pub Staff, Student Sen- ate, and the National Honor Society. Jane's quiet charm and her deep sensitivity to others make her a credit to Skyline and a friend to all. Milann Ubernosky ilann Ubernosky is a student any friend or teacher in always rely on regardless of the task she is ven. Her sense of humor and friendliness make jr a joy to be around. In service to Skyline she has sen a member of many clubs and organizations eluding FTA, Service Club, French Club, Chorali- 'S, Senior Pub, and National Honor Society. Each person is an important member MARIO BOWENS of this dedicated group. The Marching Band has participated in the “Parade of Champions and the State Fair Parade. This school spirited organization is made up of 102 people, a small group compared to the large number of Skyline students and yet its function makes it a very necessary fac- tor in the life of Skyline High School. The band is led out on to the football field by the drum majors. Chuck Bennett and Mario Bowens, followed by the majorettes, Cathy Steyo, Danette McNew, Pam Shanahan, Janet Mikesell, LaMetra Willis, Karen Godek, and feature twirler, Teri Pierce. These nine colorfully uniformed members make up the head of this organization with each one contributing a major portion to the band’s overall effect. The first place trophy at The All Star Twirling Camp was won by twirlers Cathy Sleyo, a sophomore, and DaNette McNew, a junior. Teri Pearce, a junior, won a first place trophy in the Novice National World Two Baton, a second place in the Novice Flag routine, and an eighth place medal in the Interme- FEATURE TWIRLER- diate Parade Majorette, at Notre Dame University with over 2,000 TERI PIERCE contestants from all 50 states and Canada. 108 The 1973-74 Raider Marching Band 109 DRUMS: Bill Nail, Leon Beard, Steve Carpenter, Don Hastings, Lee Welch, Tim Figura, Isaiah Jones, Terry Matthews, Bruce Linker, Richard Haywood, Tom Crabtree. Six girls and two “dudes” were chosen last year for their person- ality, acrobatic skills, appeal, and for their great lung and mouth capacity. Through the agony of defeat during a football game, the early morning practice, the sore throats, the skinned elbows, the jokes, the laughter, and the sudden “last game-blues,” our cheerleaders have cartwheeled and jumped, and somehow survived. 113 BATTALION STAFF BATTALION COMMANDER: Carlos Gutierrez. On the opening kickoff Skyline fumbled the ball, thus giving Carter excellent field position. The Cowboys took advantage of the situation and scored from the one with 8:24 left in the first quarter. Fortunately the extra point attempt was blocked. The Raiders countered with a 7-yard TD run by Mike Sandone. Billy McBee's attempt for the extra point was wide to the left. A Carter score brought the halftime count to Skyline 6, Carter 12. In the third quarter the locals marched downfield and Quarterback Jim Jennings threw a 12-yard strike to Charles Green for the score. McBee's kick was good with 4 seconds left in the quarter. A Carter score soon brought the tally to 18 to 13 but the Raiders would not be lassoed. Jennings scored on a quarterback dive from the one with 4:07 left in the con- test. Final score was Skyline 20, Carter 18. 281 Stallions Kick Skyline It was a Skyline-North Mesquite game for the third year in a row — minus the rain. One tradition remained. Skyline lost. Three interceptions by North Mesquite held the Raid- ers scoreless until the fourth quarter when with 5:09 left, Steve Hollywood went across from the twelve for the touchdown. Billy McBee's PAT was good. But to no avail, because Skyline was already down by twenty points. Thus the Raiders lost 26-7. 282 The Grand Prairie game started on an uninspiring note with the Raiders fumbling the opening kickoff. This gave the Gophers good field position in Skyline territory. But thanks to the Raider defense the Gophers did not score, for a while anyway. With 3:25 left in the first quarter, Levelle Lee of Grand Prairie scampered 25 yards for a Gopher touchdown. The PAT was good and the score was Grand Prairie 7 Sky- line 0. Early in the second quarter Skyline replied with a 7-yard touchdown run by Mike Sandone. The extra point attempt by Billy McBee was good. The Gophers took the ensuing kickoff and marched downfield to score another touchdown. The extra point was good and the score at the half was 14-7 in favor of the Gophers. Quarterback Jim Jennings, pushed across from the 2 for a touchdown. The PAT was no good. Midway through the third quarter Scooter Reed went for 84 yards for another Gopher TD. The Raiders countered with a one-yard run by Sandone to make the score 21-20, Grand Prairie. Skyline drew the final blood with a short pass from Jennings to Miller for a touch- down. The try for 2 was successful and that made the final score Skyline 28 Grand Prairie 21. 283 Turnovers Top TJ, 27-0 Yes, Virginia, the Skyline mascot is still a Raider, but one should give credit where credit is due. During the second quarter of the TJ game, both teams were plagued by fumbles. Skyline finally converted one of the Patriots' miscues into a touchdown to take a 6 to 0 halftime lead. After recovering another TJ fumble in the third quarter the Raiders marched down the field to score again and make it 13-0. On their next posses- sion TJ fumbled again, and Skyline got 7 more points as a result, thus making the score 20-0 in favor of the Raiders. TJ’s last fumble came in the fourth quarter. Once again. Sky- line pushed across for a touchdown to make the final score. Raiders 27, Patriots 0. 284 Panthers Swim Past Raiders A plain vanilla attack by Hillcrest, and a driving rainstorm combined to give the Pan- thers a 13-6 win over Skyline. The game started out as a defensive battle as both teams exchanged the ball. In the sec- ond quarter the Panthers got things going as Don Farris carried it over from the 19 to put the first claw marks on the Raiders. The Raiders were not to be denied though. In the hardest rain of the night. Skyline used the running of Jim Jennings and Steve Hollywood to drive 67 yards and tie the score at 6-6. Skyline looked like they would pick up where they left off. The Raiders drove to the Pan- ther one, only to fumble. Hillcrest pounced on the loose ball. The final claw marks inflicted by the Panthers came in the closing moments of the third period with a 1-yard run by Don Farris. The fourth quarter was won by the rain, but of more importance the Raiders suffered a setback in their quest of another district title. 285 White Edges Skyline In Crucial Game Had it not been for one mistake in the waning minutes, Sky- line may have been 2-1 instead of 1-2 in district play. The Long- horns kicked a field goal to down the Raiders 10-7, and emerge as the number one challenger to Spruce. Offensively, Skyline dominated the game outgaining White 369-217. Jennings struck on a quarterback dive to give the Raiders a 7-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the Longhorns rallied to strike for 10 points. The touchdown came on a 64-yard pass, and then after a White interception of a Skyline pass, the Horns kicked the field goal that made the difference. Skyline was not through. With about 5 minutes left in the game the Raiders drove to the one, but to no avail. White recovered a Raider fumble, thus ending the Raiders' hopes for another District Championship. 286 Apaches Massacre Raiders Spruce took a giant step forward in their quest for a district championship, by topping defending champion. Skyline, 31-0. Things were not intended for Skyline this night as they committed eight turnovers which Spruce turned to good advantage. The Spruce defense set up three of the five Apache touchdowns. The touchdowns came on runs of 31, 1, 1 yards and a 9-yard pass. The backs that did the most damage were Frederick Turner, Kenny Pizzoro, and the pass from Joe Wright to Kenneth Dickerson. There was little good for Skyline, except for an inter- ception late in the game. It even looked like the Raid- ers might score and avert a shutout, but alas the clock ran out, thus preserving the Apaches' 31-0 victory. 287 Miles Achieves 200 It was the second Skyline Homecoming, and the Raiders brought home a 28- 2 victory as well as win number 200 for Head Coach Theo “Cotton Miles. Unlike the week before when everything went wrong for Skyline, every thing went right. A well-balanced offense that amassed 264 yards of total offense, and a defense that came up with 7 turnovers led the way in the victory over the Spartans. Skyline scored first when Jennings threw a 14-yard pass to Hughes. Sandone ran for a two-point conversion. In the second quarter Skyline really got things going. Billy McBee connected on two short range field goals, and the Raiders were obviously in command. Right before the half, Sandone scored a touch- down from 7 yards out. The extra-point was good and at the half Skyline led 28-0. The third quarter was uneventful, but Chuck Walton set up the final Raider touchdown with a fumble recovery. Jennings scored a few plays later on an 8- yard run, and the extra-point sealed a 28-2 Skyline victory. Raiders Cage Tigers The Lincoln Tigers found themselves trapped in a cage sur- rounded by Raiders, as Skyline cruised to a 14-6 victory. It was a cold and windy night; and for awhile things looked cold and windy for the Raiders. Lincoln scored first on a 56 yard return of an intercepted lateral. The extra point attempt went awry, and Lincoln owned the scoreboard 6-0. Skyline came back to make the second quarter their finest hour. First, Jennings scored on a short run, and McBee’s extra point gave the Raiders a narrow 7-6 lead. Then after an inter- cepted pass Skyline moved deep into Tiger territory, but the drive stalled. Enter Razzle-Dazzle Thompson who jumped up from the holder’s position and fired a touchdown pass to Mike Sandone. The half ended Skyline 14, Lincoln 6. The second half was marred by mistakes, stalled drives, and tough defense. When the final gun sounded the Raiders had successfully tamed the Tigers, and rose above the .500 mark for the season. Raiders Claw Cougars A combination of defense trick plays, and a little luck enabled Skyline to down Bryan Adams 14-7, and close the season on a winning note. Earlier in the week, a prelude for victory had been set as the Junior Varsity and “B” teams won their games. The scoring started in the second quar- ter after an interception by Mike Hughes. Skyline then pulled the old Aggie play, and it worked like a charm, as Bohne tossed a TD pass to Tom Miller. Later in the same quarter the Raiders started a drive from their own 33. 67 yards later Mark Thompson ran into the end zone to give Skyline a 14-0 halftime lead. Bryan Adams came roaring back in the third quarter blocking a Raider punt and running it over for six points. The extra point narrowed Skyline’s lead to 14-7. Twice in the final stanza B.A. came knock- ing on the touchdown door, but the Raider defense rallied to the occasion and shut down the Cougars both times. It was a good way to end a surprising 6- 4-0 season and a third-place finish in Dis- trict 11 -AAAA. 290 The 1973Junior Varsity Football Team cRONT ROW: left to right: Coach Harwell Coleman, 22 — Vernon Humphrie, 82 — Alf Davis, 71 — Gregory Saba, 60 — Steven Hammond, 15 — Stephen Orake, 70 — Billy Constancio, 14 — Randy Goar, 51 — Warren Lyons, 24 — Kent Smith, 25 — Jeff Sanford, 66 — Thomas Constoncio, 73 — William Cook, 10 — Harrison Scott, 16 — Roy Rickey. Woodson was a man who firmly believed that the achievements of the Negro, properly set forth, will crown him as a factor in early progress and a maker of modern civilization. Dr. Woodson initi- ated Negro History Week in 1926 and selected the period in February that encompassed the birthdays of famed abolitionist, orator and civil rights leader Fred- erick Douglass, Feb. 14, and Abraham Lincoln, Feb. 12, also the day of the founding of the NAACP in 1909. The Black History Week national theme for this year was Helping America Understand.” All the activities highlighted the Afro-American's concerted efforts to maintain and develop the American dream: life, lib- erty, and the pursuit of happinessl Black History Week should be a week when all Americans take time out and look at the achievements and contributions of a large minority group. Black History Week at Skyline was a tremendous success this year. The complete student body of Sky- line contributed to making Black History Week a week to remember. 359 361 Members of the National Forensic League traveled to the University of Arkansas for a speech and debate tournament. This was their longest trip but not their only successful one. The students filled the Skyline trophy cases with evi- dence of their talent and ability. Chili Gupper Hot steaming bowls of Skyline chili filled empty stomachs at the Booster Club supper. For only a buck and a half, eager eaters could feast on chili, crackers, chips, homemade cake, and soft drinks. Profits from the supper were used to support the athletic program. 363 364 The Skyline Rodeo Club sponsored its first rodeo Feb. 15 and 16. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Banks and Mrs. Bil- lie Phillips, the rodeo club members organ- ized events ranging from chute dogging to bull riding. Students from the greater Dal- las-Fort Worth area participated in the rodeo. 365 Fabulous Faculty Challenges Students 366 On Wednesday Feb. 20, The Geritol Gang played the Varsity Basketball team a hardfighting, losing game. Army schooling and civilian schooling will pre- pare you for a meaningful career. But there is an important difference between the two kinds of schooling. In many cases, civilian education con- centrates on theory with little practical applica- tion. On the other hand, the Army, while strong on theory, lets you apply that theory in actual, practical workaday problems. You learn by doing ... by putting book theory to work. There is another facet of Army schooling that shouldn't be overlooked. Since Army schools teach you the most modern techniques and methods used in American business and industry, civilian executives and personnel directors place high value on the Army-trained man. Therefore, if you decide later on a civilian career, you'll take with you assets that will command respect from prospective employers. Will you like Army life? You'll like the Army if you are the sort of guy who likes a challenge and who likes to do his best at anything he takes up. For the Army is no place for a person who does just enough to get by and no more. Army life is demand- ing, the training tough. It calls for the very best you have, and, most of the time, it demands a little extra. To measure up to what the Army expects of you, you must have the ability to learn new skills . . . assume leadership responsibilities . . . and above all, exhibit a deep-seated dedi- cation to your work and to your Country. But you'll find that the Army returns a lot in kind. Training that gives you a solid foundation for a life's work. Travel — to the degree that few civilians ever have. A chance to participate in news-making events of the day. Opportunities to get to know yourself and your capabilities. Time to build strength in both mind and body . . . for recreation and friendship . . . and perhaps the most important of all, the opportu- nity to make a really worthwhile contribution to the security of your Country. ★ v m V .
