Spirits started high and rose to meet each new day with promises that the best is yet to come. It's September and the beginning is good. 42 D. £- CUHMpfoiy August 30. 1972. marked the grand opening of D. E. Co. Mr. B. J. Stamps, Mr. Weldon Griffith. Mr. Frank Guzick. and Miss Veronica Zajdl were on hand for rib- bon-cutting ceremonies. Mr. George McCormick and Mrs. Jean Petty, head of Distributive Education in our district, were also there. Mr. Stan Baker, distributive education instructor, sponsors the store. Owned and operated by students. D. E. Co. opens for business from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and during lunch hours. Complete with a cash register, the store pro- vides students the opportunity to learn salesmanship and management techniques. 44 College night, sponsored jointly by the Parent-Teachers Association and area colleges and universities, gave Sky- line students a chance to examine the programs of vari- ous schools. Approximately twenty-six schools were rep- resented. Spokesmen from the schools counseled students on entrance requirements, dormitory accommodations, class loads, and other areas of interest to the college- hound freshman. Seniors and juniors visited booths set up by representatives of the schools and received broc- hures and personal advice. 45 QpJM iS lA iu Contest The first football game of the season got off to a good start. Raider fans competing for the most unusual decorated ear gathered together September 8 in the Forney Road parking lot to await the announcement of the winners. Seniors Debbie Yoder and David Walscr won season passes for capturing first place with her Raider Bug.” A giant pizza was awarded to Carol and Jon Faffier for their second place prize. Denise Anderson, Ronnie Kruse, Linda Thompson and Randy Watterson took third place and were awarded tickets to the Roosevelt game. Honorable mention went to Terry Gains and Gary Fling. THE RAIDER BUG 46 L j Q mjomjOj d Q b The Mexican-American week was celebrated on September 14, 1972, with the ritual dances per- formed for Skyline students by professors and stu- dents from the University of Mexico. The colorful dances told legends and myths con- cerning customs of the Mexican people. A marriage ceremony and the confrontation of warring tribes highlighted the dances. Lavish props in many col- ors fascinated the Skyline audience, which was kept spellbound with a fire ceremony. Goodwill was promoted as the performers requested Raider spirit badges after their presentation. 47 VbuJnJb Ob QooSj Uau , CkOAjkpy B'lOiUW The drama class had its first production October 5 and 6. Each lunch period had its own Sack Lunch Theatre presenting Charlie Brown and his friends. For the price of a quarter, the entertainment turned out to be a great success and provided the actors a rewarding experience. 48 MR. B. J. STAMPS MR. FRANK CUZICK Dr. W. T. The Who's Who section tells their story. Faculty members had an opportunity to make nominations. A committee then reviewed the nominees and selected two percent of the most outstanding seniors. These students well deserve the recognition of this section! AugWj Abio v A ball of Fire” and a bundle of energy,” Audrey Abron is a familiar sight at every Skyline function whether it be a foot- ball game or a dignitary’s tour. Audrey’s activities include Cheerleader Squad. Sanger-Harris Teen Board. Student Senate, and National Honor Society. She is active in her church choir and in its youth activities. She was chosen to be a part of Upward Bound, a project dedicated to attaining college educa- tions for gifted students. Perhaps Audrey’s most significant contribution was her lead- ership by example during the difficult transition for Crozier Tech students. She was able to transfer her love and loyalty to Skyline, thus providing a pattern for others to also make the change more easily. 134 Vivacious and attractive Jennifer Anderson hopes to someday become a speech teacher. Her record at Skyline shows her preparation has been thorough. Jennifer is an outstanding speech student specializing in poetry, oratory, duet acting, and dramatic interpretation. She participated in every tournament Skyline entered this year and has received numerous semi-final and finalist positions. Her awards include a second place in the district University Interscholastic League contest, a second place at the Highland Park tournament, and a certificate from the Longview tournament. As a transfer student from Roosevelt. Jennifer’s interests evolved from music to speech. If her record is any indication of the future, Jennifer will achieve her career goal. James Bowen is one of those outstanding students whose enthusiasm and leadership blend into a unique personality. He is destined to make tin most of his abilities which include, but are not limited to. athletics. James has been an outstanding member of both the Raider varsity football team and the track team for three years. During his senior year James began training for a possible career by enrolling in the CDC Plastics Cluster. He extended his interest in this field through membership in its chapter of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Through his team efforts and his individual successes, James has helped to build Skyline. 135 B't ut Boyd Brian Boyd is a gifted and dedicated artist. As a student in the Career Development Center Art Cluster, he has spent much time and effort creating signs, posters, and other art work for the CDC and the high school. His talent has been recognized by persons out- side Skyline also. He won a first place in art com- petition for his design for a magazine cover. The sharing of one’s talents makes a person wor- thy of respect and admiration. Robe tfc Button Robert Button is an excellent student who is conscientious and enthusiastic. He is outstanding in Spanish and is a member of the National Honor Society. He also served Skyline through representing his class as a Student Senator. Robert’s athletic talent is applied to golf. He participated with the Skyline team during his junior and senior years. Robert has been seen as a leader among his friends and classmates, his personality providing a pleasing example for others. 136 K d (jcmx Leadership was personified in the person of Kent G nine this year. Kent successfully led the Raiders to a semi-final playoff game in football. He overcame the shock and pessimism many players and fans felt at the beginning of the season. He proved not only his athletic ability hut also his never-give-up” personality. Besides being a three year letterman in football, Kent is a mem- ber of the Key Club. Latin Club. Student Senate, and played basketball during his sophomore year. As treasurer of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Kent provides not only physical leadership hut spiritual leadership as well. Uloyd Coop t A great musician and an excellent student. Lloyd Cooper has made many significant contributions to Sky- line. He has won numerous awards for his musical talent and has performed in such a manner that he has brought the music cluster together on many occasions. Lloyd is a member of the National Honor Society, the Jazz Ensem- ble, Choraliers, Chorale, Mu Alpha Theta, and Sunshine. He has successfully combined his musical talent with scholastic superiority in order to benefit himself, his peers, and his school. 137 Loju ifr Dtodoto Nicknamed motor mouth” by one of her admiring teachers, Laura Denton puts this talent to good use by leading the Raiders as a cheerleader. Her outgoing, boisterous personality made her the likely choice as editor-in-chief of the Senior Pub. Her energetic nature extends to more serious endeavors as she is a member of the Student Senate and the Senior Steering Com- mittee. She plans to major in journalism at Texas Tech in Lubbock and to eventually have a career in public relations. Her personality will definitely be an asset in the profession and she will likely find the same success she has found at Skyline. For three years Judy Dodson has been a faithful Skyline Raider. Her devotion to the school l cgan in her sophomore year when she. along with many others, endured the days on a temporary campus. Fellow students have displayed their friend- ship for and confidence in Judy by electing her cheerleader for three years. She was also a member of the first Homecoming Court. Judy’s versatility is displayed through her membership in National Honor Society, Student Senate, Senior Steering Committee, and Future Teachers of America. Judy has cer- tainly contributed to transferring Skyline from a dream to a reality. Jucfy Dodson 138 C AO Ekwti o Popular and respected by her fellow students, Carol Farrier has a depth of warmth and understanding that makes her a friend to all. She constantly shows an appre- ciation of Skyline as a school, the student as a student body, and the teacher as a faculty all working for one cause, Every kid a winner.” Carol works for Skyline through many organizations including Service Club, FTA, Student Senate, Pub Staff, Ice Skating, Office Education Association, and National Honor Society. Joyce- Rums Joyce Favors is conscientious, quiet, and understanding — quali- ties which are rare in today’s rushed society. A very hard worker, she is always eager to work on any- thing at anytime to be of sen-ice. Her main interest revolves around speech activities and she plans to major in the subject in college. She specializes in duet acting, poetry interpretation, and dramatic inter- pretation. Her talent in speech has been recognized through a second place trophy for dramatic interp at the Highland Park tournament. 139 Beauty, brains, and talent are not often found in one girl, but Kim Glenn is the exception to the rule. Kim has been involved in many school activi- ties including Future Teachers of America, Silhouettes, Latin Club. Service Club. National Forensic League, and Student Senate. Her attractive appear- ance and personality enabled her to win a semi-finalist place in last year’s Miss Teenage Dallas contest. Sin was also elected Key Club Sweetheart. Kim's school life is well-balanced between play and work. She had an outstanding semester as a participant in speech tournaments. She won a first place trophy for persuasive speaking at SMU, made finals in oratory at the Hillcrest tournament, and went to the semi-finals at the R. L. Turner meet. After completing her high school days at mid-term, Kim Ix-gan work as a receptionist for a law firm while she makes plans to attend Austin College. SuSOH Gcm Susan Garner is a mixture of beauty, kindness, intelli- gence, and loyalty. The combination makes her a charm- ing and likeable girl. Susan has done much for Skyline and her efforts have been rewarded with recognition from fellow students. She was elected Junior Princess for Homecoming and Student Senate officer. She has served Skyline through membership in Silhouettes, Mu Alpha Theta. Spanish Club, Orchestra, and Service Club. LiSCb f-faynGS Anthropology, paleontology, and ecology' are not exactly 'sissy” pastimes, but that doesn't stop Lisa Haynes, presi- dent of the Science Club. Encouraged by her father, Lisa spends her summers not by the pool but on archeological digs. She has made some outstanding discoveries and hope's lo expand her exploration to Africa this summer. As a certif- ied scuha diver she hunts enthusiastically for clues to the past. In contrast she works diligently for the present and future through ecology projects. She was one of a few select Dallas students invited by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to lead children on ecological expeditions in rexas and Oklahoma. As she is the top science cluster student academically. Lisa’s future is bright and the world may someday Ik made more pleasant, as Skyline has been made more pleasant, by her contributions. Alan Green is a talented musi- cian and a well-respected membei of the Skyline student body. His musical ability has led him to par- ticipate in the Marching Band. Lai Band. Schola Choir, and Chambei Choir. However, Alan is not con- fined to practicing his music every hour. He finds time for recreation and entertainment through the Ice Skating Club and the Bowling Club. With his cooperative personality, his great talent, and his pleasing per- sonality, Alan could not have helped but be an inspiration to oth- ers. 141 fObtH f-lickey Kirn Hickey, an outstanding athlete and student, devotes much of her time to personal improvement as well as school improvement. Outside activities include Explorer Scouts and tumbling. Her interest in physical fitness and athletics has enabled her to win numerous awards in swimming and diving competition. She has won regional diving awards and has entered state com- petition. She also uses her leadership techniques in cheerleading and as a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Dental Careers Club. Though modest and courteous, Kim is a devoted Raider and thus a valuable asset to Skyline. Marching in front of over fifty stomping girls could bi dangerous — but not for Silhouette captain, Cenia Jack son. Loved and respected by the group, Cenia led tin marching Silhouettes weekly in front of a proud, cheer ing student body. She spent countless hours practicing i order to present a flawless performance. Her spirit an determination seemed contagious and certainly showed i the precision routines of the group. GumOj Jod ojt 142 Jose Martinez, outstanding student and cadet, has par- icipatcd in the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps for hrec years. He spent these same three years as a mem- jer of the Diamond Disc Club. Other interests include Distributive Education, VICA, Spanish Club, and Student senate. Jose’s scholastic ability gained him membership n the National Honor Society. Friendly and dedicated, lose exemplifies the superior quality of students at Sky- ine. CM J obfc With achievements, honors, and positions too numerous to mention, it might be best to just say that Clark Jobe is a nice guy! He has participated in every Skyline activ- ity from giving the daily announce- ments to making major decisions for the Senior Class. Clark’s warmth and energy were recognized by his peers and they showed their confi- dence in him by choosing him as Senior Class president. He has rewarded this confidence with dedi- cation and many hard hours of work. Clark cares about this school — its students, parents, faculty, and administration. 143 B'My NeaS- It has been said of Billy Neal that he exhibits remark- ably positive and healthy attitudes in many areas of thought and human endeavor. These areas include athletics, office work, community service, religion, and academics. Billy is a member of the Office Education Association, the Business Careers Club, tin Key Club, the Student Senate, and the National Honor Society. He is an active member of the Car- ver Heights Baptist Church. Billy's athletic record has brought recognition to him and to Skyline. In football he carried the ball over 1.000 yards rushing this season. He was recognized by the Dallas Times Herald as the All District Player of the Year. He varies his athletic training through participation in track. Billy's posi- tive attitude has been a source of leadership for many Sky- line students this year. Ned OstMnd u Athletics and scholarship make Hal Ostrander a well-rounded individual. His athletic ability helped the Raiders com- plete an outstanding season and his scho- lastic ability qualified him for National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. His interests expand from these to Young Life. Sunshine, and Ice Skating Club. Hal's dedication and devotion to Skyline has certainly made him an outstanding Senior. 144 Debbtfc Pa tftt Debbie Parisi has consistently shown that she has as much enthusiasm and dedication as she has talent. She has been active in all the CDC drama productions working as either an actress, a technician, or a director. Her hard work and devotion paid off when she was awarded the lead part in the drama cluster’s production of The Silver Cord.” She also participated in the festival of one-act plays, the senior play at Carter, and in speech and drama tournaments. Deb- bie’s interests are not confined to drama, however. Member- ship in the National Honor Society is proof positive of her scholarship ability. She has also served as a student council representative and was in the pep squad. Involved and active describe Pat Paulson. Pat has a variety of interests which keep her busy and help make Skyline a better school. Among her many activities are Student Senate. Latin Club, Concert Choir, Camarata, Senior Steering Committee, and Clinic Assistant. Pat also found time to report news for Reflections and to partici- pate in the high school drama production of Your Were Born on a Rotten Day.” Her efforts with the Senior Class play helped Starmate, a student dating service, become a success. Pat is not too busy to ignore her studies and achieved membership in National Honor Society during her junior and senior years. Pot Pawkwt 145 Jo Nila’s love, passion, and concern for society are exempli- fied by her devotion to Skyline. She is a superior student in the classroom and participates in numerous outside activities. Her scholarship has been recognized with her induction into National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She served Sky- line by marching with the 72-73 Silhouettes and by participat- ing in the Service Club. She has also been a member of the Spanish Club. It is said that Jo Nita cares about this school,” and she has shown this to be true through her participation and school spirit. Sieve Pte ce- Courage and determination have enabled Steve Pierce to remain a leader during times of personal disappointment. Because of an injury early in the foot- ball season, Steve was unable to participate in the sport he loves so well. His spirits were not defeated, however. He cheered his teammates from the sideline and shared in their joy over victory. The ability to deal with pain and disappointment separates the great from the mediocre. Steve is one of the greatest. 146 David Qt uj mt Scholarship and personal integrity are basic qualities possessed by David Stewart. The handsome senior is a superior student and an excellent athlete. Members of the National Honor Society elected him their president and he led his teammates as their football captain. David’s academic excellence promises him a bright future and his pleasing manner assures him many friends. ztcki QtovcM Vicki Stovall is a conscientious and hard-working student as is shown by her superior scholastic record. She is very courteous and is always aware of the feelings and needs of others. Her understanding nature has won her many friends among her fellow Silhouettes. A mid-term graduate Vicki has already left Skyline a legacy from her school spirit. 147 Lera Traylor, an outstanding foreign language student, is a diligent worker. She possesses those qualities necessary for being successful at a foreign language — patience, thoroughness, and determina- tion. Lera is a sweet and warm person with many friends and admirers. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Senior Steering Committee, and the French Club. 148 Simple and beautiful is the way June Washington says sh wants her music to sound. In many ways this description fit: June also. She is a talented music cluster student who ha: brought much attention to Skyline through her individua accomplishments. She was the only high school student to wit in a young composer’s contest at Mountain View College June's piece, Concerto in D-Sharp Minor, was played by th Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Anshel Brusilov encouraged her to take a bow and the concert audience showet their delight with her music. June was further honored with ; long feature article and photograph in the Dallas Times Herald Her club activities include Majorette, Drum Majorette, Sym phonic Band, Schola Cnatorum, Drama Club, and Sigma Chi She truly exemplifies the pride” of Skyline. Jbui IMfcsfuagttm R xudy Woitm ou; Randall Watterson has left his mark for future Skyline students through his activities in the Architecture Clus- ter. Randy was instrumental in the designing of the two houses constructed by those clusters under the heading of World of Construction. During his junior year he was a Student Senate repre- sentative and played football. Although his interests zeroed in on the cluster, he still serves the student body in various capacities. Randy is vice-president of the Sen- ior Class, is president of the Architecture chapter of VICA, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. He was selected for membership in the Key Club also. Randy has helped to build a house of bricks and wood, but more important, has helped to build a school of pride. 149 151 Ah, great it is to believe the dream As we stand in youth by starry stream: But a greater thing is to fight life through And say at the end, the dream is true.” By Edwin Markham 152 SPONSORS: ofiUmcJl f-lotitw Society President: Patsy Pen land Secretary: Linda Goolsby Treasurer: Lynette Anderson Mrs. Helen Menefee Mrs. Linda Choice Miss Nancy Ferrin OFFICERS: Audrey Abron, Sharon Alford. Through a three «'lass society built on wealth, students gain an insight into motivation, power, anil people, above. An under- standing of people's culture and value system was 3lso the goal of a simulated archeological dig. below. In DIG. teams of students created a culture and buried the culture where it was dug up by another team and reconstructed, below. Special interest area groups serve to allow students to explore their interest further. In the Criminal Justice section, the Dallas Police Department provides Officer York. al ove, as a lecturer. Much of the class time is available for independent study for work on the curriculum. Patsy Penland and Lovce Burgess use it to good advan- tage. Lula Goolsby uses her class time to work not only on her objectives but to complete surveys being used for information for her semester pro- ject. From the basket of community involvement, we weave students into volunteer situations of their particular inter- est. Jan Rhodes, ABOVE I .EFT, spends three days a week working with the U.S. Dis- trict Attorney which helps her decide on the possibility of a career as a lawyer. Mark Moore, ABOVE RIGHT, enjoys one day a week working with a minister. Both Vicki Collins. LEFT, and Tricia Weinstein. BELOW RIGHT, are interested in careers as teachers. They spend cluster time working as volunteers in local schools. . . . (fiotw Oj Co tce uW 291 Digging into the next basket, we find relationships . . . both student to student and teacher to student. Although diverse ideas are expressed during discussions, a harmonious atmosphere prevails. Otudenis To climax Black Heritage Week, a soul food lunch was made. Following that — a few dancing lessons! John Tudor (right), and Jane Robinson (below) serve as learning directors for the cluster. When you see a learning direc tor, you usu- ally see kids surrounding them asking, Have you arranged that job Did you correct that evalua- tion . . . ?” What am I going to do for a project . . . Army schooling and civilian schooling will pre- pare you for a meaningful career. But there is an important difference between the two kinds of schooling. In many cases, civilian education con- centrates on theory with little practical applica- tion. On the other hand, the Army, while strong on theory, lets you apply that theory in actual, practical workaday problems. You learn by doing . . . by putting book theory to work. There is another facet of Army schooling that shouldn't be overlooked. Since Army schools teach you the most modern techniques and methods used in American business and industry, civilian executives and personnel directors place high value on the Army-trained man. Therefore, if you decide later on a civilian career, you'll take with you assets that will command respect from prospective employers. Will you like Army life? You'll like the Army if you are the sort of guy who likes a challenge and who likes to do his best at anything he takes up. For the Army is no place for a person who does just enough to get by and no more. Army life is demand- ing, the training tough. It calls for the very best you have, and, most of the time, it demands a little extra. To measure up to what the Army expects of you, you must have the ability to learn new skills . . . assume leadership responsibilities . . . and above all, exhibit a deep-seated dedi- cation to your work and to your Country. But you'll find that the Army returns a lot in kind. Training that gives you a solid foundation for a life's work. Travel — to the degree that few civilians ever have. A chance to participate in news-making events of the day. Opportunities to get to know yourself and your capabilities. Time to build strength in both mind and body . . . for recreation and friendship . . . and perhaps the most important of all, the opportu- nity to make a really worthwhile contribution to the security of your Country.
