Working together, we are limited only by our imaginations Cited as one of the nation's most progressive educators, Dr. Marcus A. Foster served as superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District for three yea rs. Youngest of five children, Dr. Foster was born March 31, 1923 in Athens, Georgia. Raised and educated in Philadelphia, he did his undergraduate study at Pennsylvania State College, and continued through the University of Pennsylvania for the first of his three doctorate degrees. Dr. Foster began his teaching career in 1948. After 22 years of teaching and administrating all-level schools, he was appointed associate superintendent of Philadelphia schools. Dr. Foster, his wife Albertine and daughter Marsha moved to Oakland when he was selected school superintendent in 1970. Ambushed by Symbionese Liberation Army members, Dr. Marcus Foster was shot and killed the night of November 6. f'. . . he engaged parents, children, school staff, and the community to prove, again and again, that confrontation and conflict provided communities for growth.
