National concerns affect student life Cheering from the bleachers, waiting in the 15-minute long quick lunch lines, and in passing between class bells, 2323 faces blended smiles, knowledge. and hopes for successful futures into a collage captured by the Olympian 74. National news topics worked their way into class discussions and became student concerns in the time between filling out registration cards and filing out of graduation exercises. Inspired by popular movies like American Graffiti , fall quarter activities included a nostalgic cruise through Montclair. Low-riding students were joined by teachers and administrators while a local disc jockey broadcast music reminiscent of the Fifties and Sixties from a supermarket parking lot. Billie beats Bobby Halfway across the country in a well advertised Battle of the Sexes , I racketeering Bobby Riggs was soundly defeated by tennis star Billie .lean King. Demolishing the New York Mets, Oakland's A's brought home their second consecutive world series title. Skyline finished on top of the Oakland Athletic League football season, as the Oakland Raiders placed first in the Western Division of the American Football League, not quite making it to the Super Bowl game. Politic and economic puzzles cornered the American public throughout the year. Watergate became a household and journalistic term. Televised congressional hearings were watched by social science classes as the probing into the democratic headquarters burglary began. Scandals reign Under the pressure of world-spread accusations, the Nixon administration was caught in a state of deterioration. Many presidential advisers were replaced: even Spiro Agnew decided to resign from the vice-presidency to avoid charges which later barred him from his Maryland law associates. Mr. Agnew's appointed successor was Gerald Ford. SLA revolts Educators around the country were shocked by the slaying of Oakland School Superintendent Dr. Marcus A. Foster in November. A letter claiming responsibility for Dr. Foster's death was delivered to local media signed by the Symbionese Liberation Army. Resurfacing in later months, the SLA made front page news again when University of California coed Patricia Hearst was abducted from her Berkeley residence by contingent members. Subsequent SLA communiques to the Hearst publishing family demanded the set up of a multi-million dollar free food program for California welfare recipients. Crisis affects public Snow fell in the East Bay hills, as in the winter of 1972, only heavier. Mount Diablo, covered in white, added an alpine look to the holiday season. Energy crises. threatening since late summer, turned into reality as the cold set in. The President requested that thermostats be turned down to 68 degrees while driving speeds were lowered to a 55 mile per hour maximum. Gas lines. blocks long in February, were relieved by even-odd gas rationing and the lifting of the Arab oil embargo. Students streak College campuses across the nation took up the latest student craze - streaking. The sport of running naked in public was used as a feat of dare-devilry, and as an attention gettei for causes such as presidential impeachment and student rights. Ravaged by fire a year before, the home arts department moved back into permanent classrooms in the spring. From September until June, Skyline participated in a year of fame and infamy. The grand finale
