Dominating cross country for eight consecu- tive seasons, the Titan Harriers captured another Oakland Athletic League champion- ship. With a strong varsity and a promising junior varsity team, the Harriers showed their dominance over the league again. Leading the Varsity team this season were returning lettermen Sam Palmatier, Dwayne Long, Rex Weichhart, Terry Nelson and Dave Moles. The other varsity members include Douglas MacNeil and Darrel Washington. In the final meet seniors Rex Weichhart and Dwayne Long led the Titans to their eighth OAL title. The junior varsity took the championship by taking the first sixteen places in the final meet. The cross country team is coached by Dave Peterson and Paul Berger. The team worked out rain or shine. For the third consecutive season, the basketball team came away with the Del Valle tournament trophy. The Titans opened the tourney with a 66 to 64 victory over Harry Ellis High in Richmond. In the semi-final game, Skyline met a fine Vallejo team which proved to be a worthy opponent. The Titans found themselves behind by 6 at halftime, and fought back to tie the score at the end of regulation time at 68 all, forcing the game into overtime. The score was tied at 72 with less than 10 seconds left, when Keith Greenaway poured in a 15 foot jumper to cap the Skyline comeback. In the championship game, once again the Hoopsters found themselves behind, but in the presence of Piedmont High and by six points at the beginning of the last quarter. Knowing that the final eight minutes meant the title, the Titans pulled together and played great defense to pull out a 74-73 victory, and the championship record standing at 5 and 0. The Titans closed the preseason with a 58-55 victory over a tough George Washington High team. Traveling to lVlack to open the Oakland Athletic League, the team shot over 50 percent, only to have the Warriors shoot better. The Titans scored their season high of 81 points, though losing by 6. Skyline dropped their next three games to Tech, Castlemont, and Fremont. Arch rival Oakland High was Skyline's fifth OAL opponent. The Titans led the whole way only to be caught at 74. With three seconds left, Nlost Improved player Brent Turner pumped in a 30 footer to win it for the Titans. The win was followed by two poor losing performances to Nlack and Tech. Determined to prove that Skyline was no pushover, the Titans traveled to Castlemont on February 18 to play the Knights. The Titans led for over half the game only to have key players foul out, thus negating Skyline's hope for an upset. League champion Fremont was the next to last opponent. Once again the team's inability to put together two good halves in one game caused the Titans to lose 47 to 60. In the final game Coach Fred Noel played all members of the team. After leading by 5 at halftime, the team went cold in the second half to lose 45-58. Seniors on the team were Robert Cooper. Jack Nelson, Tim Grant, Keith Greenaway, Leroy Leonard, John Gordon, Stan Howard, Most Inspirational player Bob Breilh, and Most Improved player Brent Turner, 92 SPORTS Hoopsters take tourney for third straight season All-tournament player, Stan Howard, leaves four Piedmont players flat-footed as he goes up for two points
