Apt seniors gain awards plus honors Scholarships were earned by many deserving seniors in pursuit of higher education. Among the scholarships won were a four year monetary grant to the University of Southern California, a S1000 scholarship to Linfield College, and a S500 award to Rice University in Texas. Other students won first through third places in the Skyline Market Art Contest sponsored by Piedmont Grocery Company. Chosen by they senior class council, the recipient of the daughters of the American Revolution Girl of the Year Award was honored at a luncheon given for all DAR winners in the area. The Miss Teenage Citizen award was won by a Skyline senior. The contest wassponsored by the Montclair Recreation Center to honor an outstanding senior girl and give her the chance to go on in further competition.. Qualifications for both DAR and Miss Teenage Citizen included a good service record, leadership in school clubs, and cooperation with students. Winning a S100 award and S100 for traveling expenses, a junior was honored at a governor's luncheon and was flown to Washington D.C. for the finals in an essay contest on employment of the handicapped. The Bay Area Engineers honored a senior boy with a S400 award for outstanding performance in the field of engineering and electronics. An outstanding senior girl received the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award, a national award given to the highest scoring girl in the field of Homemaking in every school. Another nation-wide foundation has awarded the status of semi-finalist to two unexcelled senior boys. The very desirable scholarship was given by the Hertz Foundation. The Exchange Club of Oakland sponsored a contest for most outstanding senior boy and girl of the year. Candidates were judged on their scholarship and citizenship records and on amount of school and community service. Coordinating all scholarships and awards was Mrs. Marjorie Beach. Scholarship winners from various colleges are Pam Scott-Linfield: Denise Hodges-USC and Nancy Tague- Rice. Scholarships are reward for many worthy students Many students were chosen as outstanding in their fields at Skyline and were given the chance to go on in further competition. Others were award winners or honored with certificates of achievement. Among these latter award winners were California Scholarship Federation Sealbearers. Students achieved this status and gold seal on their diploma by being members of CSF for four semesters, one of which must have been in their senior year. A junior girl was honored by being chosen representative to Girls' State, a program held at Squaw Valley for the purpose of developing a deeper interest in the problems of government. Girls formed a mock government electing Congressmen and a governor. Six juniors were nominees from Skyline for the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award. Students were Barbara Winslow, Ann Scherer, Ron Goetz, Greg Bowers, Doug Bartholomew, and Steve Brittenham. Two American Field Service finalists were Philip Chan and Shari Smith. Skyline had a National Achievement finalist. All Skyline semi-finalists became finalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. The seven finalists were judged on the basis of their NM test scores, one other examination and teacher-counselor evaluation. ln rugged competition between other outstanding Skyline economics students, a winner and one alternate emerged to go on in regional competition for a sizable scholarship. The contest was sponsored by the Gemco Department Store Foundation in hopes of developing better business and economic consciousness in students and future businessmen. Chosen as outstanding by faculty and counselors, the Bank of America awarded plaques to four general field winners. With the chance to win S50 to S1000 in regional competition, the students participated in group discussion before a panel of judges. Winners were judged on grades, activities. Girls' State winner is Lucretia Ford lrightlg alternate is Karen Haag. Lucretia joined other girls at Squaw.
