Organized to provide students with the opportunity for complete self-scheduling, the Mill was the first system of its kind to be used in Oakland. The Mill was formed to let students set up. programs to fit their various needs. The purpose was to attempt to stabilize class enrollment earlier, which would eliminate many program changes. The lVlill decreased the number of transfers and increased the number of satisfied students throughout the year. Students gather outside the auditorium before going through the lVlill to self-schedule. At Mill conflict station, social science teacher Mr. Maurice Besse and Principal David Swanson aid Dietra Robinson, Jim Harper, Louis Kopecky, Nancy Peshon, and Sally Lowell. 12 FACULTY

Mr. Sidney Simonson, 'vice- principal, worked out the Master Program and balanced classes after the initial Mill Day programming. Vice-Principal Wilma Lorentz headed Zonta Club and girls' discipline while Vice-Principal George Benson directed teacher supervision at pre- season and Oakland Athletic League functions, as well as boys' discipline. Principal David Swanson pauses on a tour of the campus to admire Skyline's view.

' ' School Within a School'proves relevant School Within A School, an alternative to the system, completed its first year of existence. ln addition to the normal class offerings, many extra curricular activities were scheduled. Guest speakers from all over the country came, movies were presented, and field trips to varied points around the Bay all added to the school's ability to reach students. Before school started, some of the students and teachers got together for a camp-out at Kerby Cove. The purpose of the trip was to develop good teacher-student relationships, a more relaxed atmosphere. Teacher Mike Manshardt leads class members Lynn Wanrhaftig, Laurie Swift, Kathy Biasca, Becca Hoff, Gary Manshardt, Sherry Piper, Robert Watts, and Robin Burns in an environmental studies course in SWS Left: Silhouetted in solitude, Robin Burns spends a moment of contemplation at Kerby Cove in the School Within a School June outing.
