Led by Jeff O'Donnell, Gary Hunter, Mitch Wainwright, and Nick Lenhart, the wrestling team finished the season with a 2-3 win-loss record in the Oakland Athletic League. OAL season opened with a match against McClymonds. The Titans dropped a close one losing 36-33. As the season continued, the grapplers lost the next two matches against Castlemont and Fremont. They surged back winning the last two matches from Technical High and arch rival Oakland. Skyline also had one of the finest heavyweight divisions in the OAL. The upperweights were led by Gary Hunter lheavyweightl, Jeff O'Donnell l194 lbsl, Mitch Wainwright i178 Ibsl. These three wrestlers dominated the Oal by going undefeated throughout the season. The three were invited to compete in the state finals at CalQState Hayward. After losing many graduating lettermen, the 1972 track team broke in many new sophomores and juniors in order to fill all events. This year's strength, as usual, was in the long distance races. To lead the field of long distance cindermen were Rex Weichardt, Dave Moles, Duane Booth, and Terry Nelson. In the mid-distance events, Harry Fews, Kent Mulkey, Pieteor Visser, and Dave McPeak led the 880 and 440 events in league action this year. Striving for the excellence of last year, the sprinters were led by Gene Howard, Clarence Williams, and Richard Leach. The triple jump was a new event in OAL field action. Leading this event were Ken Beaver and Stan Howard, who also competed in the long jump. Other important figures in the field events were Greg Griffin and Bob Altmeyer lshot putl, Sam Palmatier and Jim McDonald lpole vaultl, and Ken Beaver and Dwight Wright competing in the high jump.
