S.'s worthy portals under the most favorable circumstances. After getting over the first thrill of actually being a part of the hustle and bustle of the high school we settled down to electing our class oflicers. We chose Aristide Bouchard as president, John Hanson vice-president, Patricia Quinn secretary, and Judy Wise treasurer. Rep- resenting us on the student council were Robert Bushey and Joanne Franck. Mr. Thomas was elected our class advisor. The Juniors tendered us a wonderful Sopho- more reception and made us feel welcome and an actual part of the school. We took part in many school activities, being well represented in all school sports and dramatics. Our cheering section included Virginia Gilman and Mary Laney. Many of our classmates went out for the band and chorus. Yes-this had been a great year for us as Sophomoresl We returned our Junior year feel- ing very much at home. As upperclassmen we knew the ropes and it was our turn to welcome the underclassmen. Elections were held and the results were-all male!-Francis Laldratta president, Aristide Bou- chard vice-president, John Hanson secretary, and Robert Bushey treasurer. Representatives to the student council were Judy Wise, Joanne Franck, and Francis La- Pratta. Our class advisor was Miss Reardon. We had fun welcoming a Hne group of Soph- omores at a reception held at the high school gymnasium. This year many of our boys really shone on the gridiron, in basketball, and in winter sports. Our girls racked up numerous points on the basketball team. We were well represented in all the social activities of the school. Three more of our class- mates made varsity cheerleading: Beverly Blais- dell, Charlene Dostie, and Priscilla LeBlanc. Chosen for Girls State were Eldena Fowke, Virginia Gilman, and Glenda-Lou Rowell. For Boys State, Aristide Bouchard. The biggest event of the Junior year is always the Junior Prom and ours was no exception. With stars twinkling overhead and the stage set for a roof garden scene we danced to the dreamy melodies of Oscar Brown and his Night Hawks. Judy Wise and Aristide Bouchard were chosen as Queen and King over the Prom. Their attend- ants were Eldena Fowke and Francis Laliratta. September ,54 found us back at S. H. S. with a new feeling of triumph at having reached the peak. Class officers were: Aristide Bouchard, president, Guy Bolduc, vice-president, Judy Wise, secretary, and Eldena Fowke, treasurer. Robert Bushey, Jolm Hanson, and Everette La- Porte were representatives to the Student Council. Mr. Gordon was chosen our class advisor. This was our big year in football. Two of our greatest players, Francis LaFratta and Guy Bol- duc were chosen as co-captains of the team. Virginia Gilman was elected head cheerleader and Eldena Fowke, head majorette. Reigning as Football King and Queen at the annual football dance were Charlene Dostie and lirancis Lalzratta. The school Teepee Talk was published reg- ularly during the year with Dawn Caouette and Patricia Kelley as co-editors. Eldena Fowke was chosen by popular vote of the senior girls as the D. A. R. candidate. Our LEVER Board was chosen with Dawn Caouette and Eldena Fowke as co-editors, with many others of the class serving on the Board. Thanks to all performers, the Senior play, Annie Get Your Gun , was a big success. - JUDY WISE, Senior Class Editor SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS . . . First Row: E. Fowke, A. Bouchard, G. Bolduc, J. Wise. We, the class of '56, having our summer jobs, many friends and various activities, resumed our studies at S. H. S. as upperclassmen. Our first major achievement was the election of class ofhcers. As our president we chose Maurice Sirois, our vice-president, Diane Hilton, secretary, Theoline Leo, and treasurer, Christine Scott. Gail Halliday, Lawrence Adams, and James Easier were selected to represent our class on the student council. Miss Norma Collins accepted the role of our class advisor. Football season saw many Junior boys parti- cipating in our foremost sport. At the annual football banquet Leon Worthley and Maurice Sirois were named co-captains for the ensuing year. From our class, Gail Halliday and Emma lane' O'Neal joined the varsity cheerleading squad, Esther Goodness returning as a veteran. Theoline Leo became head cheerleader of the I. V.'s while Ruth Carpenter and Diane Wing became initial members. Being substitute majorettes last year, Patricia Barnes and Shirley Roux advanced to regular positions. Altering the traditional stunt night of Sopho- more Reception this year the program provided a skit contest to determine a king and queen of their class. Both boys and girls gave their usual support to the basketball teams. To add variety to our .lunior year we adopted a new custom, that of Junior Prize Speaking. Placing first in the dramatic division was Gail Halliday and second was Mary Thompson. Em- ma O'Neal won first honors for the humorous selections with Dorothea Johnson taking second place. Richard Hall received honorable mention. The musical organization and various school clubs were aided by many worthy participants from our junior class. As this year draws to its close, we, under the leadership of Miss Collins, have eagerly begun preparations for the annual Junior Prom. Through the understanding and companion- ship of our principal, the teachers, our news friends the Sophomores together with the Sen- iors, we feel that we have attained the neces- sary knowledge and experience to fulfill our duties as Seniors next year. A 'V ,,t. This year has brought us to the liinal step toward our common goal - graduation. As this and the previous years have been successful, we are sure that our next will prove even more so to us, the class of '56. At first almost all of us were a little bewildered about finding our way around, but we soon over- came it with the help of the upperclassmen. The year began with the choosing of new cheerleaders and majorettes. About fifteen Soph- omore girls went out for cheering and from those fifteen, lane Chasse and Margaret Laney were chosen. Three majorettes were also chosen from the Sophomore class: Donna Wallace and Deane Quirion with Mabel Dickinson as substitute. A number of the Sophomores are members of the chorus, band, and orchestra. Many boys from the Sophomore class eagerly participated in sports. Eight of them made the layvee football team and did Very well for them- selves. When basketball season arrived, live boys were picked for the layvee team, while Bircharcl Towle and Donald Young played varsity. The girls were also interested in sports. Sev- eral of them are on the girls, Iayvee basketball team. Elections for the class oflicers were held in November. The results were as follows: Presi- dent, Birchard Towleg vice-president, Myra Clay- ton, secretary, Donald Young, treasurer, Jane Cates, student council, Margaret Laney and jane Chasse. We chose Mr. Harris for our class advisor. On November 12, the Juniors honored us with the traditional Sophomore Reception. lt was different this year from previous receptions. Candidates for king and queen were selected from each of the four Sophomore classrooms. At the reception each room put on a short skit. The winners were jane Cates from Miss Bishop's room and Fred Godin from Mr. Nadeau's room. The dance was very successful and we all had a wonderful time. l think all the Sophomores will agree that ,54 and ,55 have held many well-remembered ac- tivities. Even though we had to work much harder, we will be rewarded in the end and come out on top as graduates of '57, SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS ...First Row: M. Clayton, B. Towle, J. Cates. Second Row: J. James Easler, end, Dick Hall, tackle, and Frannie LaFratta, fullback, were the only three of eleven starters on the offensive team of 1953 and were back for further duty. This left eight vacant positions to be filled. The other six lettermen were: Guy Bolduc, Ronnie McGowan, both guards, Dick LaPointe, end, Don Castle, Dick Plourde, both halfbacks, and Aristide Bouchard, quarterback. These boys had help from those boys that are the unsung heroes, many of whom received let' ters this year. The boys had a very successful season with only two losses and seven wins. Under the guidance of our new band director, John McNamara, the band has been very suc- cessful. Extensive marching practice resulted in some outstanding performances during the foot- ball season. As soon as the football season ended, the band started working on their concert program. The first concert was held at Bingham on March 17, and met with great success. On April 6, a concert was held at the Skow- hegan Municipal Auditorium. The band performed at the Eastern Maine Music Festival which was held at Belfast. Mr. McNamara should be commended on the excellent work he has done with the band. , - KATHLEEN SARGENT, Activities Editor CHORUS . . . Under the supervision of a new director, Miss Christina Cefalo, the chorus has done much towards the promotion of interest in the music department. We feel that we may point to the S. H. S. chorus with pride for the work they have done this year. On March I7 the chorus had their first con- cert in Bingham. On April 29 a semi-formal dance was spon- sored by the chorus in the gym. All proceeds went toward the chorus robes. In order to secure money for the tickets a food sale was held in the gym. On April 6, the chorus performed at the Muni- cipal building. The girls wore evening gowns, and the boys dinner jackets. The chorus sang at the Eastern Maine Music Festival in May. Miss Cefalo deserves much credit in the work she has done with this group. - KATHLEEN SARGENT, Activities Editor ORCHESTRA . . . The first orchestra rehearsal was called by Mr. McNamara a few weeks after school opened. With spirits high began the plucking of strings and rolling of drums. We accepted an invitation to play at the an- nual Christmas meeting of the P.T.A. at North Elementary School. John Akeley, Deane Clark, and Glenda Lou Rowell represented the orchestra at K. V. with concerts at Madison, Waterville, and Cardiner. With the New Year underway and spring around the corner, the orchestra started plan- ning for the annual spring concert, which was April 6. The selections were Mexicana, Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, Entrance and the March of the Peers, and Echoes from the Grand Opera. As has been the custom for the past few years, a few members from each organization are se- lected to play in the All-State Music Festival for four days. This year the host city was South Portland. Those selected were Martha Bernard, Clenda Lou Rowell, and Mary Thompson. The All-State Orchestra was composed of 85 members with Dr. Paul White of Eastman as the guest conductor. The orchestra will play one night at grad- uation this year. We, the members of the orchestra, wish to thank Mr. McNamara for all he has done in helping us make this year a success. - GLENDA Lou ROWELL ALL STAR CHORUS... First Row: J. Neil, V. Gilman, C. On a very wet and muddy Wednesday after- noon on the 27th of October the annual Senior Bowl Came was held. Despite the bad weather and a Hooded football field, there was a good turnout. After a mad scramble of mud and men, the underclassmen emerged victorious. That evening the Miss Skowhegann contest was held, the defeated team being the contestants. The evening started successfully, and a large crowd attended the gay affair. Fourteen lovely ladies were escorted to the stage by young lads to enter the battle for the '54 crown. It is just a small mill town built along the banks of the river. Its lights reflect in the waters rushing to the dam where in a chilling mist they disappear with a roar, only to reappear frothing and tumbling over one another. Suddenly they seem to speak to me. Count your blessings and be glad for them. Watch me and know how the Indians traveled unheard and unseen to the first settle- ment. Touch my Waters and know the grave of many. The lights of the town blink sleepily in the reHection and say softly, We're here because of those settlers who were willing to suffer and be killed to protect their beliefs. We're here be- cause they worked until their hands were raw and sore. The moon rose slowly over the town silhouet- ting the hills in the distance and adding its beauty to the reflection. The kindly old moon seemed to be challeng- ing me tonight. What is your greatest blessing? Our freedom of religion? Our type of govern- ment? Thoughtfully I sat there until I found an an- swer. Our greatest blessing is America and her people. These have all been blended into one precious shining amalgam, the American way of life. Our pulsating cities are shouting Free- dom , the serene countryside echoing Peace',. I-low many times have the first settlers trod these hills in search of game and fished these swiftly moving waters that flow between the hills? I-low many hardships have been endured by those early settlers who, because of their be- liefs, their wants, and their needs came to America to build a new life. Today history repeats itself. Immigrants come still, their wants the same, still rejoicing that now they may speak as they like, earn a living of their own choice and worship as they believe. They will have diihculties in earning a place in America, for our way of life is strange, but it is theirs for the learning. How fortunate I am that I was born a citizen in this country. I may never know the tribula- tions those first settlers withstood to make Ameri- ca as I know it today, but certainly I can appre- ciate it and be grateful to them. With each new development of this country there has been heartache and suffering. But a glorious victory of man, or man over nature has followed. My town is typical of every town, city, and hamlet in the United States, unpretentious, humble, and stolid. It has been bought at a great price, the blood of democracyis heroes whose sons can be called away again from the forge or the saw, the counter or the ofhce, to again take up the musket and tool of liberty for my town or to procure it for some other less fortunate people. The town speaks to me, America, a sprakling diamond in a world of darkness and despair, standing for enduring love and hope. Surely this is our greatest blessing. Winter . . . A dramatic trumpet of earth and skies, With all its fury the winter arrives. Sweeping the earth of all her fall color, Making nature reveal the dark, duller Part of life, yet even mysterious. Thus revealed, nature can hut do her hest To prove that still our ancient earth is hlest. She beckons the wind that carries the snows, Bids him to work. She's wise, indeed. She knows That the earth must have a new winter coat. With tumultuous fury the wind works Filing the snow. Seems like some of it lurks In hack of buildings to jump out at you. Sparkling designs of frost, icicles, too, Are like glimmering, gleaming, clear crystal. The countryside exchanged its coat of grays On this, the most enchanting of all days. The earth is covered hy silvery white. l'm sure angels shook stars with all their might And covered the earth with shining stardust. - KATHLEEN SARGENT 65 Marilyn Monroe of S. H. S. . .
