We don t hate much call for dysprosium and praseodymlum I hope I won t do quite that replled Henry although you never can tell what I m liable to do That s right said Joe over his shoul der as he went in search for the chemicals in question Henry took them from him very care fully and after hearing the precaution Be careful started off 1n the direction of the lab which he reached a few min utes later Without any difficulties Here surrounded by test tubes retorts burners and varlous other pieces of equip ment necessary to the chemist he felt right at home He immediately started his work and very carefully sorted out his materials and followed with utmost pre c1s1on the instructions in the book he had been readlng that very morning He took great pains to measure out ex actly just the lequlred amount of each chemical If lt asked for 15 grams of dysprosium he carefully measured 1 5 grams of it and didnt guess somewhere between one and two grams That was Henry always xery painstaking in every thing he undertook That is why he had done so well in college and had been gran ted the prixlleges that he now enjoyed He worked well into the afternoon not taking time out even for dlnner He had a sandwlch one of the other workers had brought him around one o clock and that was all he ate until he left about four thirty That mght he read more in his book and went to bed early thinking always of the experiment he was undertaking The next morning he got up brlght and early the same as the previous morning and after breakfast hurr1ed back to his work at the laboratory This went on for several days He had to try over and over again to make those two substances com bxne It seemed as though he met with failure every tlme One afternoon while he was busy work ing he noticed something which caused him to motion to the chemist next to im Come here a minute he said I be lleve Ive found it Look When I add a certain amount of this compound here to the praseodymlum it forms a violent re action Now if to the resultlng substance I add 4 3 grams of dysprosium I think I will get the result I am looking for Slowly Henry added an especially pre pared solution drop by drop to the prase odymlum This caused a violent boiling about fifteen minutes After the reaction had entirely taken place he measured out 4 3 grams of dysprosium and prepared to add it to his newly formed compound I dont know whether this will work right or not he said turning to the men who had been watching him all during the process But if my previous calculations are correct it should react to produce the substance I want Watch carefully now Im going to add this dysproslum a little at a time Here we are now I add Just a little t The room was rent with a deafening roar Henry saw a little ball of blue flame then he felt as though some unseen hand was pushing against his chest and forcmg h 1m backwards backwards backwards he knew not where all the objects swam before his eyes he felt strangely dizzy he knew he was falling but couldn t seem to help himself he did nt even put his hands out behind him to stop the force of the fall He was com pletely stunned 37 . y . . , - I . 77 7 7 ' ' ,, . . . , - , . . , 7 . . .
