They took part in 12 games, of which they won 5. With this year's experience behind them the girls will be expected to start off with a bang next year and keep up the good work. The team will, however, miss the ser- vices of Beverly Masters, Betty Jean McDowell, Anna Belle Morton, Geneiva Yeager, and Barbara Dearmont who are mem- bers of the graduating class. However, this season, like every other, had its high points, and the six victories the boys did capture stand out vividly in their list of accomplishments. Unlike the first team the second string stacked up a goodly number of victorios, winning nine out of a possible seventeen. The varsity's little brother, the Housecats, followed suit with six successes in ton attempts. COMPOSITE FIRST AND SECOND TEAM RECORD my The great downfall of the season was the failure of the Skidmore quintet to tally on charity shots, missing enough in many cases to give them an easy victory. During the season they hit only 255 times in the 560 chances given them. However, a considerably better average was tacked up on double pointers. On field goals alone the 'Cats scored 850 points, 148 of which may be attributed to Don Barber. A comparison of how the Skidmore ,combination checked up against their opponents is seen in the rela- tive score of 1329 for the opposition and 1069 for the boys in black and gold. A - ' AWARDS - Competition for positions' on the first five was wide open all season, consequently lettermen were hard to choose. The remaining boys who came up to first team specifications and received the customa- ry letters were: Roger Barrettl78J, Ralph PoterK47J, and Dale Johnsonl45J. ' Those who didn't quite make the grade for varsity mono- grams, but received second team letters were Richard Bar- rett Robert Barrett, Monty Wilson, Pat Hasty, and Stan- ley Worl. Other members of the team, whose services many times were indispensable, wereg Franklin Celwell, soniorg Homer Lowrance, junior, Bob Lowrance, James McDowell, Bob Hitchcock, sophomorcsg Lansing Reese, Junior Gorman, and Don King, freshmen. INDIVIDUAL RECORD Of somewhat greater interest than the composite team record is the individual playerfs standings. Don Barber was high scorer with 74 double pointers and 18 free throws, a total of 166 points for he season. Don had a greater number of field goals than any of his team-mates, but Charles Lowrance ran up 28 points on free throws,out- distancing Roger Barrett by only two points. COACH CThe following material is a sum ary of an 'informal interview with Mr. Smirl.1 Mr. Smirl expects next yeir's combination to be the best since he has coached at Skidmore. The boys are shap- ing up fine, and by next season it is anticipated that they will have developed a speed and accuracy which will carry them far in interscholastic competition. The boys are given a mark to shoot at by a description of Mr. Smir1's conception of an ideal player. This ideal player would not necessarily be a Wsuperman,U but would have physical ability and level-hcuded-cleverness backed by an undeniable determination to win. His attitude would be dominantly cooperative toward beth his coach and his fellows. He would play for sheer love of the game and not with the superficial intent of Wmaking a lctter,W which when poorly or deceptively gained becomes only a piece of felt and chenille. - 1 2'f'J f fi? With open arms we wel- comed Vernon Hitcheoek, Junior Linville, Darold Yates, Chrystal Davison, Guila 'Flctchall, and Paul Fletchall. Jeanne McGinnis canm :bring this year. In the fourth year Donald.3assett left us to join the fifth grade, and Franklin Celwell, Delmer Johnson, and Wilbur Hilbert left schoolg but again we gained new classmates: Billy Coston, Junior Keever, Gilbert Kon- dall, Aleta Hord, and Dorothy Key. Again Miss Maud Lin ville was our teacher. , The fifth grade did terrible things to our total, as we lost Junior Keever, Gilbert Kendall, Dorothy Key, Ruth Heigler, Don Barber, and Ted Barber, and gained only Harold Reynolds and Dorothy Russell. Miss Mar- garet Parker was our teacher. The sixth grade was rather uneventful. Miss parker was still our teacher, and we were the oldest on the lower floor. Irene, Esther, and Barbara Dolph came. We were saddened during the following summer by Miss Parker's death. The seventh grade! We cane upstairs to have depart- mental work. If we were lost in all the space and con- fusion, we never admitted it to ourselves. Miss Jones was new our sponsor. Barbara and Esther Dolph left, but Dorothy Joan Peter came. At the beginning or our eighth year we were happy to have Wilbur Hilbert with us again and also to have his brother, Lawrence. George Hickerson moved away, Then we became green freshmen and really a part of the high school. we were accepted as such by the seniors who had a lovely party for us and who were very ta N 4 -f? 1 5 5 i i V 4-if EA easy with regular initation stunts. The new members of our freshmal class were: Dorothy Horn, Ola Mae Lincoln, Wilma Linville, Geneva Yeager, Kathryn lright, Willard Mclntosh, Paul O'Riley. Don Barber, Ted Barber, Mar- garet Troxell, Beverly Masters, Katherine Cottrell, and Charles Parman came during the year to make us the largest class in school, the total enrollment being thirty-three. Miss Lewis, our sponsor, left during the year, and her place was taken by Mr. Gunderman. Hr. Gunderman was our sponsor during our sophomore year. Josephine Thurston and Frances Taylor joined our class, but Harold-Reynolds and Ola Mae Lincoln were not back. Margaret Troxell left soon after school began. During the summer before our junior year, Jessie Lou Newton became Mrs. Fred Diggs, Josephine Thurston moved to Nebraska, Katherine Cottrell went to Rosendale, and Frances Taylor decided she had had enough school work. Thousands of things happened during this year. Kathryn Wri,ht was our president. Mrs. Van Hoozer and Mr. Tomp- kins were our sponsors. We had an operetta, directed by Mr. Tompkins, in which Guila Fletchall was the only junior who had a leading part. we sold candy bars and had a Junior-Night Club to finance the Junior-Senior Night Club we had the first school as we had making final preparations Decorations, theme, color scheme, when toghave it,and many other-things Banquet. At the dance. Such fun for our banquet, toasts, where and kept us all busy and happy for days. The theme finally turned out to be 'The Pot of Gold.n The height of our glory came when Irene Dolph, our representative for the queen of the Invitation Basketball Tournament, was crowned. To finish this year's activity, we decorated for the baccalaureate services and commencement exer- cises. Amidst all our fun during this year, we were sorry to lose Willard Mclntosh and Maxine Messher who moved away. we were glad to have Genevieve Garrison, Dorthy Veatch, and Barbara Dearmont join our class at the beginning of our junior year. At last we became what we had always wanted to be ever since we can remember---SENIORS OF TH GOOD OLD S. H. S. we were disappointed the very first day to find that Darold Yates and fleta Hord weren't with us, but we were consoled somewhat to see that Katherine Cottrell had returned. To our surprise Dorothy Horn had become Mrs. Delavan Patterson during the summer monthsg but she still thou,At we were nice enough that she wanted to finish school with us. With Miss Hash and Mr. Haun as sponsors, wc started off on the final mile. Miss Hash directed our senior play, uMistakes at the Blakes'.' Again our candidate for the queen of the Invitation Basketball Tournament won. we were all gen- uinely thrilled when Helen Godsey was crowned. Our rings, colors, motto, pictures, senior trip, announce- caps and gowns, and last, but not were all calls for excitement and history of our twelve milestones. ments and name cards, least, this yearbook, debates.
