Treasurer Can it be due to that sense of security which accompanies retrospection? For who could accuse the virtuous Class of 1930 of vanity? It looks back upon its last year with complete awe and satisfaction as the most glorious in the annals of Skidmore. It is a great Truth that the class has made it overwhelmingly victorious. Immured in habitual limitations, we have flung aside all petty restrictions, and have cast the year into the throes of success. Ingenuity has been our guide. Although the world may have survived without us, it would have been obviously, a far, far poorer place. Take, for instance, that entirely new and entirely auspicious innovation, the Senior lV'Iusical Comedy. N0 feeble intellect conceived of that brilliant invention, nor of that resplendent masterpiece. The racing seasons may come and go, but that syncopating Chorus, that scintillating repartee, that rollicking, effervescent 11Freddy the Egg will live on in the hearts of Saratogians forever. And what of the blue-eyed Helena, the passionate Paris and rotarian Menalaus Of ilHelenais Hushandli? Ah! But that hour passed too quickly by! And those morbid rose petals of 11Craigls Wife? strewn so artistically by that illus- trious wife. Who can say that the Class of 1930 does not derive lineage from Dionysius? Yet things of the mind and spirit have not alone detained us here. Four years of intellectual application have revealed to us the necessity of balanced aptitude. Yes, in- deed, the seniors took the ribbons at the annual Horse Show. It was 1930 that realized the necessity of Sneak Day. With pain and sacrifice, the Class deprived itself of study for a day in the open, merely to establish a precedent for the lower classes. And now its members must go out to be caught in the tenacious toils of Pedagogy and Industry, yet will its invigorating influence remain ever in their hearts. Though they must now relinquish the inspiration of communication with one another, their past record insures them forever of infinite Success. They fall on me, Wave after wave of molten beauty, Covering my nakedness With hissing splendor, Cloaking me with gold. The crowd draws back, Affrighted at the rain of liquid fire that envelope me, Blinded. by the comets in my hair. When the last murmur of the music dies, The battlements Will be sucked in by the wind, Will become one with the vast darkness that surrounds the stars, And they, Receding from me into the infinity, Will be tinier, more distant than before. The thin notes tremble into silence. The crowd, Emboldened by the stars retreat into the thick blackness 0f the night, Surge over me, Engulhng me in the resistless tide of noise That measures their approval of the unbounded infinite. They were Skidmore Juniors, beaming in anticipation of a social year. XVith one accord they went to locate the new mail room, View the swimming pool, and scrutinize the Junior transfers. ?Then, dis- appearing within their respective dormitories, they were seen no more until it was time to eat.--TI-Ili NEWSMoNGER, September, 1929. Itis said that one night the Juniors took their little sisters to a coffee, an orange-lighted, autumn-leafed affair, with music, dancing, and a stunt or two. Yonkers NW Nz'nefy-mze w N EMM I KS THE BIRCH Yesterday I saw a silver birch. I must have seen it many times before Because it stands beside a winding path IVhere I have often wandered. Tall it is And bent as hirches are that once have felt The weight of winter storms. It stands alone Just at the turn before you reach the road, And if you did not have it pointed out You would not know it from a dozen more That bend beside the path at other turns. But somehow yesterday it caught the light Of sunset in a way to make it seem Ahre, and the silver sheath of trunk Was like an angers shining sword against The dusky purple of the evening hills. It startled me, it was so beautiful, And some strange brightness that was in me leaped To mingle with the brightness of the birch And make a mystic glory. For a space I did not move, nor breathe, nor yet exist Save in that oneness with the shining tree, iVIysterious part of some inhnity Beyond my finite mind. The sunset died And once again there was a silver birch Beside the patheno more. But I Had known the touch of immortality.
