In the earliest days of California the only white men here were those intrepid explorers and trappers who pre- ceded the discovery of gold and later the miners who searched every stream and gully for the precious metal which seemed to occur in some quantity throughout the entire state. Indians were often hostile, robbers were common and the hazard of every day living was unusu- ally high. Often a mound of rocks along the trail is a reminder of a tragedy not recorded. The Siskiyou County His- torical Society is attempting to locate and record on a map the locations of all isolated graves and such data as can be learned at this time. The picture above was taken in Garvey Glade, near Shovel Creek Meadows, south of Beswick and shows the Campbell brothers of Etna view- ing the grave of three Government freight wagon drivers who were killed there in 1873. The father of these two was the only survivor.

MYREL JAMES GREENSHIELDS Siskiyou unior College Siskiyou County now has a Junior College District. The initial official step in securing the College for Siskiyou County started when the Board of Trustees of the Siskiyou Union High School District petitioned the State Department of Education to survey the needs for a college in the Siskiyou Area. The Dunsmuir and Tule Lake High School Boards concurred, and joined in the re- quest, although Tule Lake High School District finally decided not to be included in the District. Our District Superintendent, Dr. Jere E. Hurley, led the move- ment for a college in Siskiyou. For several years, he pointed out the urgent need for a college in this Northern California Area. He arranged for the State Department of Education Survey, and personally appeared before the State Board of Education to advo- cate the approval of the favorable findings of the Survey. A big hurdle was over when the State Board of Education approved a college for Siskiyou County, and caused an election to be held for the people to decide whether they wanted a college. Dr. Hurley organized and led the campaign for the college. The College was established by a vote of 5 to l. Nlr. W. E. Roberts, County Superintendent of Schools, ap- pointed the first Board of Trustees, Dr. Don Meamber, Yreka, John Mantle, Weed, Dr. H. Meredith, Dunsmuir, Robert Davis, Fort Jones, and William Whittaker, Tulelake to serve until the next school election. All of these members were elected at the school election in May, 1957, and have been ably and conscien- tiously managing the affairs of the Siskiyou Junior College District. The most important first act of the Board of Trustees was to select a president for the fiedgling Siskiyou Junior College Dis- trict. After a careful study of the field of available administra- tors, Dr. Myrel James Greenshields was named Hrst President of the College. We feel that the Board made an exceptionally fine choice. Now let Dr. Greenshields tell in his own words, something of things which have happened since he assumed the Presidency of the College, and his aspirations for the College. The progress that is being made in the planning of physical facilities for a college to serve the youth of this northern area of California is very encouraging. The opening date for Siskiyou College has been tentatively set for the fall semester of 1960. The college will be built to accommodate over 500 students. A full program for the first two years of college will be offered. On-campus living facilities will be provided for those students who live too far from the college to commute daily. The campus will be located in a beautiful setting in the geo- graphic center of the iunior college district. The Governing Board of the College has retained one of the country's top architects to lay out the campus and to design the buildings. We are confident that we will have one of the finest iunior colleges in the country, a college that students in this area will be happy to attend, a college the community and the students will take pride in, a college where students can get education which will be equal to that available at any other college, a col- lege which will have a fine program of instruction, and a full program of campus student activities which will contribute to the educational growth and the personal development of all its students.
