XVI. Klamath National Forest The area of the Klamath Nattonal Forest embraced wtthtn the Marble Mountain and the Salmon Trlnnty Alps Prtmtttve Areas offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities The usuable recre attonal area approximates 300000 acres The topography ts ex cepttonally steep and use ts generally ltmnted to the rtdges and stream bottoms The glactated pockets tn the heads of the streams along the mann rtdges are beauttful lakes wtth adlacent meadows whtch make Ideal camping spots Heavy coniferous and hardwood forests are found below the ridges at elevattons of four to ive thousand feet The matn ridges have an elevation of around seven thousand feet wtth numerous outstanding mountaln peaks The area IS named after Marble Mountatn whtch ts a very spectacular stght Thus marble cap two or three thousand feet thtck was once the bodtes of sea organisms that were depostted when the peneplane was the bottom of the ocean Today this mass has been ratsed and crystalltzed unto a beautiful white marble that creates the vusual tmpresston of perpetual snow lt IS a mtld and mellow country wtthout the harsh rock of most subalpune areas It has a soul and cltmate that produces lush vege tation from the ptne and fir forest tn the stream bottoms to the sub alptne country on the rtdges The topography ts steep and sharp creating enormous vistas looktng out over seemungly endless moun tatns and valleys The sharp topography creates such good dratn age that It ts the most mosqutto and fly free area In Caltfornta The flora IS a mtxture of both the Rogue Rtver and the Cal: fornla provtnces and ts also an Island of early remnants where species are present that occur nowhere else tn the world such as the famous weeptng spruce Durtng July and August this heterog enous cornposntton of flowers colors the hnllstdes tn beauttful pat terns contrasted by the deep green of the Hrs and whate marble The mountaln streams are abundant wtth nattve ralnbow In the upper reaches and during August September and October the lower and larger porttons of the streams support a large ocean run of steelhead and salmon All of the 237 lakes are stocked regularly with eastern brook and ratnbow trout Ftshtng IS good Columbta black tailed deer are a habltant of the area and although the hunttng IS a llttle dtfflcult due to heavy vegetation and steep topography It IS well worthwhile as by actual measurement and weight they are the finest and largest of thus spectes tn the Caltfornta region There are numerous bear that ltve year long tn the area being readnly seen durtng the summer months on the htgher rtdges when feedtng on roots and berrtes and then mtgrattng to the lower slopes to feast on acorns and htbernate tn the fall Most of the area ts only accessable by foot or saddle stock Trnps may be planned for two to forty days wrthout ever ret actng the same traul All of the packers are under Forest Service permtt and belong to a Packers Assoctatton to assure better servtce . , . - , . 1 - 1 1 ' 1 1 , . 1 1 1 1 1 1 F' , , . . .
