THE BORDER MOUNTAINS OF MEXICO In 1838, Commodore Charles Wilkes, ofthe U. S. Navy was sent by Congress to explore this remote region and report on the possibilities for settlement. Oregon was then known as the West and California was a part of Mexico. The Siskiyou Mountains, in his report, were referred to as the border mountains of Mexico . The source of the name Siskiyou or the date in which it was applied is not known. xviii.
