The hinest opportunity for non-urban recreation occurs on publicly owned forest lands in the United States, and the great majority of such areas are within National Forests. There you will find outstanding scenery, fine fishing and hunting and approximately threerfourths of the remaining potential forest wilderness areas. There is a growing tendency toward greater appreciation by the public to the recreational possibilities of the National Forests, and many city families and hard-driven business men are finding the lakes, the mountains and the streams of rural areas providing the restful atmosphere or sportsman opportunity for relaxation or rejuvenation. Each year since the war, greater numbers are vacationing in the National Forests throughout the country. The Forest Service policy is to develop recreation advantages along with other uses, unless one type of use is particularly dominant. Development is restricted to such facilities as will aid in the enjoyment of those types of recreation appropriate to the forest. A studied effort is made to avoid artificiality and emphasize opportunities for the participant rather than spectator enjoyment, the aim also being to provide recreation opportunities for relatively large numbers of people, and not for the exclusive use of individuals or small groups. Campgrounds and picnic areas are provided for use of the general public when sites are available, and the need is apparent, special areas are set aside to provide summer homes, if such use will not interfere with other uses of a more dominant nature, trails are maintained for access to remote recreational areas, or for hiking and riding amid scenic attractions, ski runs and jumps and other winter sports are made available when possible if public use warrants, and resort areas are set aside when the type of use indicates the need.
