SISKIYIIU CllUlllTY Ill 'l'lllllUilL IICIETY A scene such as this, on the opposite page, common throughout the County up to fifty years ago, is rare today. It shows Mr. John Ahlgren of the Salmon River country leaving Sawyers Bar with supplies for one of the mines. Mr. Ahlgren, whose home is at the mouth of Little North Fork, ran a packvtrain in this area for many years and is still available for packing fishermen, hunters and recreationists into the back country. The house in the foreground is the old Tom Luddy home later occupied by the Ed Bigelow family for more than fifty years. It is the birthplace of Tom and Edwin Bigelow, Mary Smith of Etna and Alice Anderson of McCloud. The original portion of this structure, which includes the porch on the far side, was erected more than TOO years ago. The house in the background is the old Behnke home and is also more than 100 years in age. The Siskiyou County Historical Society believes that these links with the past should be given every safeguard that they may be preserved and continue to remind future generations of the pioneer who made it possible for us to live in peace and prosperity in our beautiful Siskiyou homeland. xviii.
