Siskiyou Count Historical Society SCOTT BAR 1890 This early photograph shows four wheels in the Scott River assisting in the recovery of gold from the fabulously rich bars at the town of Scott Bar. Pictures such as this are rare and, since it il- lustrates the methods used in gold recovery and shows the extent of the workings at v a rio u s periods, it is considered a very welcome addition to the files kept at the Siskiyou County Museum. Tentative identification of ownership has been made but it is subject to correction. The first two wheels were owned by a William Bennett, the next by a man named Crawford and the upper one by George McGuffy and Lew Falkenstein. The families of these men are probably still living somewhere in the county-McGuffys are still at Scott Bar and Falkenstein was, an uncle of Dr. George Kleaver. The difference in these units of equipment is quite noticeable. The first wheel is on a drive shaft that extends to a China pump set up in the hole to the left. This pump was crude but ef- fective and is being used here to remove the water from what was known as Poorman's Bar. This bar was a community asset-the welfare department or unemployment insurance of the day. A man down on his luck would be permitted to work in this bar long enough to make a small stake when he must move along to make room for the next unfortunate case. It seems that this practice was quite common in all the diggings at that period. The other wheels were for elevating the water to a flume which carries it to the site of the work where the gravel is'washd in this same flume and returned to the river. It was always returned to the stream if there was another outfit below so that the full vol u m e of the flow was available to each miner. . The Historical Society wishes to preserve these pictures in its files and appreciates information that may be available to confirm dates, ownerships and other data. - LITERARY SECTION
