SISKIYOU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY FORKS OF SALMON HOTEL The hotel at Forks of Salmon was constructed by the Bennett Company durung the boom days on the Salmon Thus pioneer company In add: tuon to the operatlon of several gold mmes was farmer packer mallman and chlef source of sup Salmon Ruver and nts lower trubutarles They ran the pack trams over the Salmons to Etna across the Trmlty to Hoopa and over Orleans Mountain to Orleans They grazed a herd of cattle In the mountains and furnished fresh meat through their own slaughterhouse to much of thus regnon The hotel was operated successfully untll about 1934 It was dnsmantled un 1948 One of the seasons hlghlughts was the hog druve over the Salmon Mountalns each fall About two hundred hogs were driven un slaughtered salted and smoked for the wnnters supply Thus was a gala event each year and all of the neugh bors came In to help with the work In addition to suitable pay free food free drunks and enter tamment was furmshed by the company ID a manner comparable to the flestas of the Spanush settlers In the South Many of our older residents wnll have a touch of nostalgia from a vlew of thus old bunldmg ply for all of the miners and settlers along the . . . .
