A SONNET TO A SPRING DAY CBM! Poem? It is unequaled in its beauties rare So pure and perfect in all its glory. The sun is shining, and the sky is free From cloud or e'en a sign of spider's snare. A gentle breeze floats lightly in the air, And fans the tufts of grass and tree, And through the open window wafts to me A voiceless call, its blessed gifts to share. But duty dares to claim me for her own. I cannot flee from ties which force and tear A captive heart, by hearing not its moan, Its sighs, or dreams for freedom it holds dear. But as I sit and long, the real falls prone, And I no longer know that I am here. NANCY WADDELL Weed High School. A WISH fSecomi Place Poemj I would the time had come-but it has not, When all men everywhere might say: Peace and friendship-Go with God. And mean it. It is not necessary that we should follow In someoneis narrow way. It is not necessary that we should ask For anyone's yea or nay. It is enough that we should grant The right to choose the road, To anyone upon the earth. And having chosen-say: Peace and friendship-Go with God. And mean it. KAY KERSEY Weed High School. BEST OF ALL QHonombIe Mentionj If one should ask of you some day, When leaves are all aflame, Which of the seasons you like best, I'm sure you would exclaim, Why autumn's best of all. But then some stormy, wintry day, When trees are white with snow, And dreaming by the fire you lay, With memories aglow, Then winter's best of all. And then in Spring, when robins sing, And fragrance fills the air, You feel in your heart a joyous ring. For there's beauty everywhere, And Spring is best of all. And as the lovely days go by, And bees begin to hum. The noonday sun is climbing high, Another time has come- By far-the very best of all. JOYCE BANGSBERG Mount Shasta. 28

SALLY', fSec0mi Place Storyj The sun crept through the window in Sally's room and stretched its long beams of golden rays onto her bed. Sally yawned and stretched her arms lazily. Her thoughts wandered aimlessly about everyday happenings. But this was no plain, everyday day. No, this was the day of the Junior-Senior Ball and she had a glorious date with none other than the captain of the football team. No, this indeed was no regular day at all. First of all, among other things, she had to rush to town and get her new formal, for a date such as this deserved a new formal. It was a dreamy creation, a low-cut neck with sequins scattered over the pink net. By 11:00 Sally had picked up her formal and was starting home, when a dilapidated old jalopy pulled up and a laughing voice called out, Hop in, Sally, and we'll go for a spin at Edmund's Lake. No, thanks, I have something else to do, she said and walked on. So what's with her? came an amazed answer among the muddle of boys and girls as the with a roar of the piper the jalopy rattled on down the street. That evening Sally, dressed in her new formal and high heels, descended slowly as the doorbell gave off a loud ring. Now, Buzzy, open the door and say 'Good evening' in your nicest manner, Sally instructed her brother, and please don't be smart-alecky, for once. Ignoring her, Buzzy threw the door open with a bang and said in the most uncivilized manner, Hi, you gonna take my sister to a dance That's right,', came an amazed answer, and Jim stepped through the doorway. Hello, jim,', greeted Sally, trying to cover up for her brother. Come in and meet my parents. Soon afterwards Sally and jim were walking hand in hand to the dance. As they were walking along they heard the squeal of the brakes of an automobile. Far down at the end of the block they could see the car drive away. When they approached the spot where the car had stopped, they could see a little puppy lying in the road. Oh, Jim! It's a little puppy, cried Sally as she rushed over to it. It's still alive, but I think it's got a broken leg. Sally lifted the puppy onto her lap and the puppy began to whine. Don't, Sally, you'll get blood all over your dress, said Jim. Better leave him there. I'm afraid he'll die anyway. Oh, no, I couldnt do that! Look, he must belong to the people who live in that house, she said, and started walking toward it. As she reached the house she looked down at her new dress. The skirt had blood all over it. The door opened and a little girl exclaimed, when she saw the dog, Oh, daddy. Buster's been hurt, and she began to cry. Her father came to the door and -gently lifted the puppy from Sally's arms. Thanks a lot, he said. I'll take him to the veterinarian, I think he'll be okay. Sally and jim descended slowly down the steps. Well, I guess I'd better go home and change into another formal, Sally said. Later that evening at the ball, jim said to her, You know, I heard you were kind of snobbish, but after seeing what you did tonight, you proved to me that you aren't. Sally just smiled and thought to herself, It's not a new formal or hairstyle that counts- it's what you are inside. ?,, BARBARA EDDY Yreka High School DON 'T BE DISAPPOINTED QHOnomble Mentionj When you've been out climbing up hill, down hill and over high, rocky mountains all day buck hunting and don't see anything, naturally you're disappointed. But don't be disappointed then-wait until you've been climbing all day and you feel as if you can't take another step, you lay down and go to sleep. All of a sudden you wake with a start. You listen. What is that noise? It sounds like something sneaking through the brush. You're so excited you can hardly think straight. You reach for your gun, keeping your eye on the place where the crashing sounds seem to be coming from. You feel around. The noise keeps coming closer. Where is that gun? You think you've left it near. You turn around-then remember that it's up against the tree which is about three yards off to your left. Slowly you get to your hands and knees and creep over to the tree. Quickly and silently you grab the gun and get ready for anything. Suddenly, crashing through the brush is the largest buck you've ever laid eyes on. You cock the gun. Something seems to be wrong. The bullet won't go into the chamber. In the meantime the buck just stands there watching you. Finally you get the bullet in the chamber, raise the gun, and-what's happened? While you were so busy trying to get the bullet into the chamber, the buck has silently slipped away. This is the time to be dirappointed. DARLENE DEAS Yreka, California 27

OUR CABIN One day my friend and I were out hiking when we came to this cabin. It was a good cabin and we liked it. We went home that night very happy because we had found it. A week later we went up to it again. To our despair, someone had torn it down. We just stood there wondering what to do, so we cleaned it all up and started building another one. There was a small pine in back. We cut it down so that it rested on the trees in front of it. . We then cut more trees and laid them crosswise on the middle one. We found some thick cedar bark around and covered the trees laid crosswise. While I was stacking pine needles on the roof my friend was making a stove inside. The other day we went up again and burned it down. Although this story did no! win n fmt or second place the judges feel that it is worthy of mention.
