FRIENDSHIP fBest Esmyj Friendship is a world problem, or perhaps it would be better to say the lack of friendship is a world problem. The only way it is possible to achieve the goal of all mankind PEACE is to obtain universal friendship. Before global friendship can even be hoped for, we must first of all learn to live happily with our neighbors. It is easy to talk about friendship, but quite a different matter to do something about it. In order to achieve world friendship, it seems the best place to start is with little types of bickering. If everyone in the world should decide to change every enemy into a friend, through personal acts of friendship, it would be a small matter to obtain world friendship. As of right now the chances of a third World War in the near future are certainly great. The only way the problems between the United States and her enemies, who need no mentioning, can be overcome, is through the peace organization, the United Nations. The object of the United Nations is to get all countries to live together in peace, to depend upon each other for vital necessities, and to lift the iron curtain which now cuts off parts of the world from each other. This can only be if first we learn to live in friendly atmosphere within our own towns and cities. That is the first step toward world friendship. GORDON NIXON Yreka High School FRIENDSHIP QSecond Place Ermyj First of all, what is friendship? Friendship is a state of being friends, a respect for others, an affection arising from mutual esteem and good will. There can not be friendship without confidence. Second, where is friendship found? Friendship can be found only in the hearts of those who want to have friends and be happy. You see little boys and girls outside making mud pies together or at a park, ioo, and many other places. Maybe they don't even know each other, but they don't care, it's someone to play with and soon they become great friends. ' At home if you are taking care of your little brother or sister, or at a neighbors taking care of their children you gradually win their confidence, and when they get hurt they come running to you ,for help. Why? Because they trust and have confidence in you. If you say, Oh, don't bother me, or something of the sort, that friendship is broken. I think friendship is the best thing a person can have or gain. SHARON MYERS, '52 Butte Valley High School. 25

FRIENDSHIP fH0l10f4Zbl6 MBIZIIOW5 Friendship is a very hard word to define because it has so many meanings. It is a deep feeling that is hard to put into words. As in the case of a person in need, a friend comes and helps. Although no words may be exchanged there is still a feeling of friendliness. Things like this are going on in this same way all over the world. These acts help to draw the countries and people of the world closer together. Friendliness between different people is a great challenge to the world's youth. Tomorrow, today's youth will be the leaders of the world. In order to have peace these leaders must know the meaning of friendship and what a precious condition it is. These leaders must also learn to fully appreciate friendship, for without friendship to bind the countries of this world together there can never be total peace on the earth. Wliat are some of the characteristics of friendship? Before people are true friends there must be a certain amount of affection drawing them together, they should have some interests that are common to both, they must show tolerance and be willing to sacrifice for the person they call their friend. Most people think of friends as reliable, honest, kind, and usually good natured. This is what the youth of today should be so that the 'world may be peacefully inclined forever. So friendship is something you, yourself can feel, but cannot explain. Never the less, it is there and always must be even though each person has a different idea of how it may exist. QAROLYN HANSON Happy Camp High School. THE MINE QBert Story, ' There is an old miner's cabin deep in the Siskiyous. It has been deserted since the gold rush. It stands on the top of a rise and around it are pine trees. About fifty yards from the cabin is an old mine, and in the mine there is: well, I'll tell you the story. One morning about a hundred years ago, an old miner awoke, yawned, stretched, dressed and went to make his breakfast. Then he went over to the mine and did his work for the day. This miner had only one enemy and this enemy was the owner of a trading post, Silas Sims, by name. Silas Sims wanted all the gold that the miner had. That night when the miner went to bed, he had a visitor, but he didn't know it. Silas Sims waited until the light had gone out in the cabin. Then he went into the mine and loosened several of the wooden beams across the top and on the sides of it. Then he went home. Unknown to Silas, the old miner had dug a hole near the entrance of the mine and buried the gold there, and also some in the mine. Somehow word had gotten around that he had hidden all the gold in his cabin. Naturally, Silas thought that was where it was. He also thought that if the miner was buried in the mine, he could explore his house and find the gold. The next morning, the miner went to work as usual, and while he was in the mine, around noon, it caved in. The old miner heard the noise and went to the front of the mine. He dug to get out, but in vain. That night the miner was dead. Silas Sims came back the next day to search the house. He cou1dn't find anything because, of course, there wasn't anything to find. He searched everywhere and even tried digging through to the mine, but the gold was not to be found. So, somewhere, up in the Siskiyous is that cabin, in the mine there is still .the gold and, of course, the skelton. Someday, why don't you go looking for it? If you find it be sure to let me know!
