SHASTA NATIONAL FOREST The most important of our Natural Resources is water. Normally we think of water as something which we can use and throw away, because it is perpetually being reclaimed and made available to us again in its pure state by natural forces. Today, with our population increases and with the increase of industrial demands for pure water, leaving it up to nature to keep us supplied with sufficient of this lifeblood of the Nation just will not work. Nature will do its share in water production, but the management of that water for our use, the making the most of it before it is finally released into the oceans, is up to us. The biggest part of the job of Water Management lies in the areas where it first drops to earth. Luckily the major portion of Californiafs watersheds lies within the National Forests. Rainfall here is intercepted by trees and brush and so when it reaches the ground after soaking thru the carpet of leaves and needles it sinks easily into the loose soil beneath and so reaches the vast underground reservoirs, which in their turn yield it back to crops and streams during the long rainless periods. When the soil is bared to the rain by fire or other means, the rainfall soon packs the surface tight and then rushes off into the stream causing flood and disaster. Within the Shasta National Forest lies one of the most important watersheds in the State of California. In those portions drainages of the Sacramento, McCloud, Pit and Trinity Rivers, which lie within the Forest, the rainfall often reaches 100 inches per year. This water impounded behind Shasta Dam provides irrigation for both the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, assists navigation on the Sacramento River, prevents Salt Water damage in the industrial Bay Area, and protects the Lower Sacramento Valley from devastating floods.
