Oh, Wilbur, you TrighTened me halT To deaTh. My hearT is beaTing like a iack ham- mer. IT lvlasher had answered The door, mine wouldn'T have been beaTing aT all. So ThaT's why you wore ThaT disguise? You boys are all so aTraid oT Masher. Yeah, and so in- love wiTh liTe. Well, don'T worry. Masher only drops in on Wednesday nighT. There's The door bell again: would you answer iT, WiIburkins? Yeah, sure. When Wilbur opened The door, his Tace meT ThaT big, broad chesT oT lvIasher's. Wilbur, knowing ThaT lvlasher didn'T have an ioTa oT sense, began To make like a Chinese buT er. SoIIy: nobIody's home! Goombye! I-Iuh? There's noT? Okay. goodbye. WhaT is iT, Wilbur? IT's Wednesday nighT in person, Wilbur said, slamming The door in lvIasher's Tace. lvIasher's dull mind 'Finally laTched onTo Wilbur's hoax. I-Iey, who's kiddin' who around here? Nobody home, huh? Well, I'II iusT waiT 'Till nobody comes ouT. As we geT back To Lana and Wilbur, we Tind ThaT They have Tinished maTh and Wilbur has his panTs legs. rolled up in preparaTion Tor a mad dash Tor home and saTeTy. The ToresT lay in a quieT calm: The sk was brighT and clear, The sun sank over The ToresT hill As The coming oT nighT drew near A long-Tailed squirrel scurried back To his nesT The deer bedded down Tor The nighTg Two chipmunks played in The gaThering dusk, WiTh IiTTle chirps oT delighT. The ToresT grew quieT as nighT drew on: The birds in The Trees were sTill: The moon came ouT Trom behind a cloud, OuTlining The Trees on The hill. Then suddenly ouT oT The peaceTul nighT The wind broughT a dreaded Tear- The scenT OT smoke was in The air. IT sTarTled The sleeping deer. The sound oT The Tire was discernable now- The seeThing crackling roar: The smoke was unbearable in The air As iT dropped To The ToresT Tloor. A sTampede soon sTa rTed across The hill- Sheer Terror was in Their veins As The animals ran amuck wiTh Tear Across The ToresT lanes.
