Then when she shffened oui and her lasl brealrh escaped her, il' was The sound of her 'Four pups' whimpers fha? she lasl heard, and who were now lefi io ihe mercy of Jrhe loresi. Bui The moon, unknowing of The Jrrag- edy ihai had occurred on ihe Trail ihis nighi, played shadows on lhe wil- lows of The nearby slream, while +he silvery lighi made ripples on The waier. TRAGEDY ON TI-IE TRAIL ll-lonorable lvlenTionl The moon casT iTs silvery lighT over a Trail worn deep by The hooTs oT many deer. Through The Tall pines, iT casT shadows on The dark ToresT Through which The Trail ran, and slowly slinking along, was a wolverine. She was on The Trail oT a moose which had recenTly Tollowed The well worn way oT The deer, which led To waTer. WiTh her nose To The Trail, she was rapidly covering ground, across The padded pine needles, and Tallen logs, when she became aware oT anoTher scenT coming sTrongly To her Trom iusT ahead. Maddened wiTh hunger and The realizaTion ThaT someThing else was also sTalking The moose which she meanT To kill and make lasT Tor her meals Tor many days To come, she guickened her pace and iusT ahead she could see a gray Torm loping along The Trail. She sTarTed To run and iusT beTore she overTook her enemy, iT whirled and she saw a large gray wolT, which waiTed Tor her wiTh hackles bared and blood shoT eyes, wickedly waTching her approach. The angry moTher rushed aT him and The TighTing raged Tor quiTe awhile, buT boTh animals were becoming weak Trom loss oT blood and The lack oT Tood. BuT neiTher would be a coward and run. While The Two desperaTe animals were TighTing, The moon played moon- beams over The Trail, buf noT Tor long, as a large black cloud driTTed lazily across The sky and bloTTed ouT The yellow lighT, piTching The ToresT in compleTe darkness. Slowly The wolverine dragged herselT backward away Trom her Toe, warily awaiTing anoTher aTTack Trom him, buT he had already made good The chance oT escape, and was rapidly leaving The Trail, in hunT Tor a hiding place. When The moon came ouT again, The yellow lighT, reTlecTed on The glisTening Tur oT The wolverine, as she painTully made her way back over The Trail. BuT she wasn'T walking very TasT now, and every now and Then, she would Tall on The ground wiTh blood oozing Trom her gaping mouTh. ATTer resTing Tor awhile, she would geT up and go on, buT as she became weaker and weaker, she began To cry in a soTT whimpering way, Tor noT very Tar ahead oT her, in a small hole beneaTh some rocks, were Tour Tiny lives which depended on her. ln The hole, shrill liTTle whimpers could be heard and ouT came a gray WHITE AND GOLD

They Tound iT in America and since Then America has been a land in which people may have any religion They choose. Publishers oT newspapers and magazines have The righT To publish any- Thing They wish and every person in America has The righT To read These publicaTions. Many books and pamphleTs are prinTed on science and hygiene. This liTeraTure helps The American people To learn oT ways and means oT proTecTing Their healTh and prolonging Their lives. ln America we have Treedom oT speech. We can say anyThing we Think or wanT To say. We are allowed To hear any Toreign broadcasTs or anyThing else over The radio. News is broadcasT every day over The air To Tell us oT The happenings in The whole world. Freedom in our counTry is one oT The priceless possessions we musT always Treasure. l.iberTy in America is anoTher greaT advanTage. ln America every man has The righT To a Tree Trial. In courT, iusTice is pracTiced. We also have The righT To mainTain our own possessions. ln some Euro- pean counTries people cannoT call Their properTy Their own. Every person has The privilege oT holding any public oTTice, if he is capable oT doing so. l-le may own his own business regardless oT wheTher he is Jewish, CaTholic or ProTesTanT. To geT inTo an oTTice oT any kind one musT have educaTion. ln America educaTion is Turnished Tree by The governmenT. We have a social securiTy sysTem To help people in Their old age. There are hospiTals and clinics and many places in which Tree medical aid is given. ln America There is much progress. We have very modern machinery To be used consTrucTively and noT Tor war purposes. lvloney is appropri- aTed by The governmenT Tor many oT The modern invenTions. YouTh should be very proud oT his counTry, because iT is The greaTesT counTry in The world. We speak a language which is covering The earTh, and we shall conTinue To learn how rich is The opporTuniTy and how greaT is The glory oT being born in a Tree land. YouTh shall some day rule America and iT will be up To us To see ThaT iTs name is unTarnished. We should be proud oT our counTry which has already given us more Than we can ever pay back.
