The roar as The Train passes, are sweeT music To my ears. To mingle wiTh The crowd, To dodge The TraTTic, are exciTing buT pleasanT. To waTch The working people aT play, To breaThe air ThaT reeks wiTh Tobacco smoke, To Tour The nighT clubs, To Take a wild ride in a Taxicab, are They noT, in a sense, a heaven on earTh? Then aTTer The nerves are iadecl and The body Tired, I am conTenT To seek my hillside home and resT. NaTure was kind To The place. She saved iT Tor a Tew oT her Tolk. There are some oT her creaTures aT work: a brighTly colored robin and his more somber maTe, building a nesT. A Tew gray squirrels, saucy Tellows ThaT They are, scurry abouT. A small sTream moves wiTh diTTiculTy Through a bed oT waTer cress. There is a bare spoT. covered wiTh ashes, where The home once sTood, The home ThaT l would build again. Would iT be a rambling super-sTrucTure ThaT would cause envy in every passerby? l don'T Think so. I came here To live near The animals, noT To crowd Them ouT. IT would be large enough only Tor my needs, a place To lay my head and Tind The energy Tor anoTher busy day in The ciTy. BETTY KICE '4l, Weed High School. Ragged and unkempT, iT needs buT a Touch To converT iT inTo a veriTable Eden. IT is noT secluded, Tor who wanTs seclusion? The cIimaTe is noT perTecT. IT is Too cold in The winTer Time, Too hoT in The summer. BuT To me iT seems ideal. I like To be in The Thick oT Things . CINDERELLA lSecond Prize SToryl As The bell rang, marking The end oT sevenTh period, The Glendale high school, suddenly sprang inTo liTe. l-lere and There happy, laughing crowds laughed gayly as They walked on, busily discussing The coming prom and who would be The lucky girl ThaT PaT Malone would ask To The prom. Eleanore was The only girl in The more sTylish seT ThaT realized The hardships in Judy's liTe. She did noT Think iT Tair ThaT her Triends should TreaT Judy The way They were accusTomed To. To her classmaTes, Judy was known as The widow's daughTer. They did noT know ThaT her moTher Took in laundry as a means Tor supporT Tor herselT and her Two daughTers. Unknown To Them was The TacT ThaT beneaTh her unrouged lips was a very aTTracTive smile which revealed even, whiTe, square cuT TeeTh and a deep dimple in her righT cheek. UnnoTiced was her beauTiTul saddened eyes and her unkempT hair ThaT had The Tendency To curl if iT had The proper care. All This and more was unknown To her class- maTes, because They didn'T care To know ThaT way down underneaTh Judy was a very beauTiTul unspoiled child. STill The chaTTer wenT on-who would PaT Malone Take To The prom was The guesTion asked over and over again? The PaT Malone who seemed To be The pride oT every girl in school. Even Judy oTTen wondered whaT iT would be like To have him speak To her beyond a poliTe hellol PaT, like his sisTer, was less superior To Judy Than The resT oT The sTudenTs aT Glen- dale high. Judy, leaving The building, passed a group oT girls discussing The prom, and, oT course, PaT. AlThough deep in ThoughT she heard her name menTioned. Maybe PaT will Take Judy Ann To The dance, mocked one girl. The girls all laughed aT ThaT and Judy, lips quivering, Turned wiTh a smofhered sob Toward home. UnnoTiced by Judy, Eleanore was behind her and had heard The remark. The caTs, she cried. BuT l'll help Judy Ann, we'll show Them! ThaT nighT a hearTbroken, saddened Judy cried herselT To sleep. Oh, why couldn'T I be as popular and as well liked as oTher girls? IT isn'T Tair! Unknown To her someone else was lying awake aT ThaT same momenT won- dering how she could help Judy and make Those girls ashamed oT Their remarks! She musT help Judy, she musT! Oh, she had iT, she could help WHITE AND GOLD
