'THE LEGEND OF TI-IE STONE LADY lSecond Prize SToryl Many Thousands oT years ago, before The dawn oT civilizaTion, when The easTern and wesTern conTinenTs were noT separaTed by waTer, a group oT Chinese came on a greaT journey Trorn Their naTive land To The vasT sTreTches oT land which now make up NorThern CaliTornia. A legend has been Told oT a beauTiTul Chinese maiden and a young Indian brave who Tell in love by a spring. As nighT came quickly closing ouT The lighT Trorn The sun The brave Talked OT Taking The maiden To his village. l-lowever, greaT diTTiculTy lay beTore Them. For years The lndians and Chinese had haTed one anoTher. IT The brave Took The Chinese maiden To his village, his TaTher would casT The brave ouT and The maiden would be shunned Tor The resT oT her life. As The lasT rays OT The sun were dimmed To darkness, The brave and The maiden decided To Tlee Trom The land oT Their TaThers. ATTer many days' wanderings, They came To The greaT mounTain. The brave, who had heard Trorn his TaTher oT The evil spiriTs ThaT lurked There, was eager To Turn back: buT The maiden, who knew noThing oT The spiriTs, wished To sTay, so They lingered. Many moons passed and all was well unTil one nighT The maiden had a Tearful dream. GreaT dragons hissed, roared, and spiT Tire aT her. The rumbling of The mounTain became so greaT ThaT iT awakened her Trom her slumber. Her lover had already arisen and was Tleeing Trom her. Visions oT The evil spiriTs his TaTher had Told him oT danced beTore his eyes. l-le even Took his loved one To be an evil spiriT. FrighTened by The Tumbling earTh and The hoT lava, The maiden caughT up a necklace her brave had given her and Tied in pursuiT oT her lover. She was soon overcome by Tumes oT volcanic gas and sTopped beside a sTone wall To resT. LiTTing a weak hand To her ThroaT, she realized her necklace was gone. A Teeling oT shame overcame her and she saw beTore her visions of her ancesTors all poinTing aT her and she leaned more heavily upon The rock, shielding her Tace Trom view as Though hiding a secreT oT The pasT. lvlany Thousands oT years laTer explorers Tound The ouTline OT a woman's Torm in sTone. sTill reclining and weeping as when The lava overTook her. AT The spoT where The necklace had dropped, lay a beauTiTul lake. lTs ever changing depThs resembled Those oT The gems worn by The Chinese girl. As The world became civilized, The lake was named CraTer Lake and nearby The sTone lady sTill guards her secreTs and her jewels. On windy days one can sTill hear The soTT, sad sighs of The maiden as The wind whisTles Through The swaying evergreens, and she seems To say, Beware oT The curse oT your ToreTaThers.
