Wilmer Van Berkum, Gerald De Jong, Roland Hulstein Mesalia, Ohio, is a small town of irresistable charmg until the portly Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Stanley, slips on their door-step, breaking his hip. A confusing six weeks of con- finement follows which he later finds out is a mistake, for Dr. Bradly was looking at the wrong X-rays. The Stanley's living room is entirely run-over by the irritating invalid, convicts are invited to meals, and trans- Atlantic calls bring a 5784 phone bill. The arrival of strange gifts from his friends further destroys the domestic life of the Stanleys. It would take an extraordinary housewife to manage penquins in her library, an octupus in her cellar, and 10,000 cockroaches in her kitchen. Then to make matters worse Maggie, his faithful secretary, falls in love with the small town news re- porter, Bert Jefferson. Whiteside is furious at this and is determined to break it up. He then summons a glamorous actress, Lorraine Sheldon, to win the affection of the young man. Knowing the girl's charm Maggie asks the aid of a clever impersonator, Beverly Carlton, who aiecting the voice of Lord Bottomley, the man Lorraine hopes to marry, asks her by phone to return to him and be married. Their disappointment is great when she finds out that it was Beverly Carlton. She resolves to stay and pay Maggie back. With the aid of mummy case Lorraine is taken away, and with the help of blackmail, Mr. Whiteside gets his way. When Mr. Whiteside leaves, he falls once again, but this time he actually breaks his hip.
