We were right in the center of our high school career. We're certain this year was our best in school. This year we started our year off with a BANG! We gave our first play and it turned out to be a wonderful success. One of the most exciting times of the year was the announcement of the arrival of our class rings. Every- one looked them over and we all came to the conclusion that they are the nicest rings that any class has ever had. Then we came to the big project of the year, the banquet. Many steps were taken to choose the best theme. We wanted things as nice as possible for the seniors so a lot of hard work and decorating followed. During the year we had fudge and bake sales to raise money. We certainly were a big part of high school this year, for the juniors took much interest in many of the activities. We were active in all large and small groups, both vocal and instrumental, F. H. A. and F. F. A. We also produced a cheerleader, contributed to baseball and basketball, were represented in W. N. A. X. Forum, and debate. We feel we have contributed much to our school this year and think we're the Jumpiest Juniors ever. . ii j -ff' ii S X if , st A - .lil This page is sponsored by Farmers Co-operative Society, Sioux Center, Ia. Wilmer Van Berkum, Gerald De Jong, Roland Hulstein Mesalia, Ohio, is a small town of irresistable charmg until the portly Sheridan Whiteside, having dined at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Stanley, slips on their door-step, breaking his hip. A confusing six weeks of con- finement follows which he later finds out is a mistake, for Dr. Bradly was looking at the wrong X-rays. The Stanley's living room is entirely run-over by the irritating invalid, convicts are invited to meals, and trans- Atlantic calls bring a 5784 phone bill. The arrival of strange gifts from his friends further destroys the domestic life of the Stanleys. It would take an extraordinary housewife to manage penquins in her library, an octupus in her cellar, and 10,000 cockroaches in her kitchen. Then to make matters worse Maggie, his faithful secretary, falls in love with the small town news re- porter, Bert Jefferson. Whiteside is furious at this and is determined to break it up. He then summons a glamorous actress, Lorraine Sheldon, to win the affection of the young man. Knowing the girl's charm Maggie asks the aid of a clever impersonator, Beverly Carlton, who aiecting the voice of Lord Bottomley, the man Lorraine hopes to marry, asks her by phone to return to him and be married. Their disappointment is great when she finds out that it was Beverly Carlton. She resolves to stay and pay Maggie back. With the aid of mummy case Lorraine is taken away, and with the help of blackmail, Mr. Whiteside gets his way. When Mr. Whiteside leaves, he falls once again, but this time he actually breaks his hip. On August 30, 1954 there were many new faces in junior high. The old members moved to senior high and were replaced by the excited and rather scared sixth graders and rural students. Some of the activities the freshman could participate in this year were F. F. A. and F. H. A. At the begin- ning of the year many of the rural students joined band. Fourteen of the freshman had the privilege of being in sextet and double mixed quartet. Those were Janice Bartels, Linda Popma, Marjorie Hiemstra, Karen Rensink, Sandra Vander Berg, Donna Harskamp, Dawn Van Beek, Adella Juffer, Hendrene Vande Berg, Judy De Vries, Phil Den Herder, Allan Schimmel, Hugh Vander Wilt, and Martin Kuiken. The sextet sang at our Christmas program. Junior high like senior high has a pep club which many of the seventh and eighth grade students belong to. Among many other things, junior high gives plays. The seventh and eighth grade gives one play and the freshman give two plays. Many attend and enjoy them very much. This page is sponsored by Casey's Bakery and the Furniture Mart. -25.. Class History In August, 1951, fifty five green little freshmen came into Sioux Center High School to further their education. During the year Eugene Klaaren joined us. We chose as our motto for Junior High Commencement, Not at the top but climb- ing. Our colors were lavender and white. We started our sophomore year by going around the study hall singing, I'm a Little Prairie Flower and bowing to the seniors for initiation. Our biggest project this year was decorating the study hall at Christmas. Gordon De Weerd did not come back. Jay Vos, Lloyd Punt, and Henry Pennings left us during the year. Fred Brandes, Chris Clay, and Gar' old Cleveringa did not return for our junior year. Dick Kraayenbrink, Glen Sandbulte, and Truman Raak joined us. During the year Jeanne Clay left us. The two projects we had were our class playg The Little Dog Laughed and the Junior-Senior Ban- quet, Deep South. Not returning for our senior year were Pete De Jong and Truman Raak. Others leaving us during the course of the year were Don De Gooyer and Marvin Brommer. Senior Fun Night, Senior Class Play, Skip Day, Career Day, and the Annual helped to rush us to the end of our happy high school days. We ended this year with the Junior-Senior Picnic and Commence- ment. This page is sponsored by Bosch's Clothing and De Bruin Shoe Store. S ' f 1 I ' X 1965 A N rr EDITORIAL Extra! A. is a national organization of boys enrolled in vocational agri- culture. The purpose of this organization is to get the boys better acquainted with the farm as well as teach them scientific methods of farming. At the beginning of the year the officers went to the lakes for a week end to draw up the program of work, which includes most of the activities of the coming year. In October it is generally arranged for some of the boys and advisor to go to Kansas City for the National Convention. We also held our Parent-Son Banquet that month. Throughout the year we held regularly scheduled meetings and had some seasonal recreation after each. In the spring we have election of officers and have some delegates go to the State Convention which is held in the larger cities throughout the state. Early in the year, the student body chose four girls from the senior high school to lead the stu- dent body in yells for this year. From the six who competed, the following were chosen: Audrey Mc Murray and Jane Vernon, seniors-Joan De Ruyter, junior-Carollee De Ruyter, sophomore. At the first pep meeting and game they appear- ed in striking blue satin outfits which featured short skirts with white piping and jackets with an inverted pleat in front, french cuffs with pearl cuff links. The sleeves and mandarin collar were also trimmed with piping. The outfits also included white mocassins with orange and blue beads, orange tights and large orange Indian heads on the back. Cheerleading activities included not only lead- ing yells at games but also supervising pep meet- ings, selling pencils, selling refreshments at base- ball games, and practicing and teaching new yells. This energetic group of girls did a fine job of raising basketball enthusiasm and school spirit dur- ing the entire season and to them-15 RAHS! The highly ranked Warriors again advanced to the state tournament this season for the fourth time in the past seven years. They did it the hard way this year, due to the fact that there were only eight teams competing in the state tournament held at Des Moines. They were picked as Siouxland's best team throughout the entire year by both the Sioux City paper and also by the A. P. Poll which is composed of all sports writers throughout the state. The Warriors finished the season with 31 wins and 2 defeats which is one of the best records ever compiled by a Sioux Center team. Under the coaching of Paul Muyskens the team averaged 77 points a game and holding their opponents to 55 average. One of the main reasons for the teams success was the well-balanced scoring. Ron Jutfer led the team with 593 points for a 19.2 average. He was followed up closely by 6 foot 6 inch Dick Kraayen- brink with 490 points for a 15.5 averageg Darrell Beernink with 438 for a 13.9 averageg John Van Riessen, 430 points, an average of 13.13 Duane Vande Berg, 254 points, averaging 7.9, Alden Berkenpas scored 132 points as 6th man. Sioux Center downed Le Mars, the second-ranked team in Northwest Iowa, twice including an 80-76 victory in the district tournament which was one of the best played games ever to be seen played by two high school teams. Maurice handed the Warriors their only defeat in seasonal play when they downed them in the semi-finals of the county tournament when two of the regulars were sick with the flu. However, Sioux Center got revenge when they beat the Monarchs in the sub-state finals. The other defeat came in the hands of Davenport St. Am- brose in the first round of the state tournament. Davenport went on to take 3rd place. The B team was again successful in winning more than half their games against very good competition. They ended the season with 12 wins and 8 losses. Playing against many double A schools, the Howard Lubach coached team either came out on top or lost by a very narrow margin. The little chiefs took two games from Sioux City Heelan, the last one in an overtime aifair. The B's played with all freshmen and sophomores except for Arnold Dorhout and Truman Bartels who were juniors. Bud Harsma, a junior, came down from the varsity squad to finish off the last few games of the season with the B's. Paul Vande Berg led the scoring with 251 points, followed by Truman Bartels with 147, Ronnie Rozeboom with 125, Arnold Dorhout with 123, Carl Berken- pas with 122, and Wally Vander Wilt with 52 points. Being that the varsity squad is composed of mostly seniors, the future of the Sioux Center basketball teams for the next few years will rely heavily on these players and if they keep on improving like they have the last year, Sioux Center will have another fine basketball team next season. Under the conditions in the past years the Indians would have been entitled to a berth in the state meet, but this year it was cut down to a four team tournament instead of the usual eight games. The team had an excellent defense this year committing only twelve errors in nine games. There were also some hard hits during the season including two home runs by Paul Vande Berg and one each by Duane Vande Berg, John Van Riesscn, and Ronnie Juffer.
