MARLENE WINTERFIELD i gf 'Y '1 CLASS PROPHECY In the spring of I975 I was a nurse an the ship Good Fortune when it took its sprung vacation crowd to Hawaii, I was especially thrilled to fund many of my old classmates of S2 aboard This was my first tour of duty with the Good Fortune I was uust cornung aboard when I heard someone soy Why Darlene De Jager whoever expected to fund you as the new nurse on my ship? I turned around to fund Captaun Stanley Lammers who us un charge of the voyage He saud You have probably notuced that our ship us one of the more modem ships of today You might be interested to know that one of our old classmates Stanley Hoekstra designed the ship You pr0b0I9IY fe member that un classes he was usually drawing cars and ships instead of paying attention o what was beung said Then Stanley took me to the staterooms and I notuced that a beautiful rob of decorating had been done so I asked Stanley who had done the lab Well h said there were two persons responsible for it Lloyd Brommer who painted the staterooms and Mrs Bubby Muilenburg formerly Mudge Mouw decorated the rooms but she has arven up interior decorating because she devotes all her time to her husband and family I then started to look arouna to see if I knew any of the passengers aboard Sure enough there was Jamce Vermeer I went up to her and asked her what she was doing aboard she told me that she was goung to Hawaii to puck up some orphan children for the Vermeer's Orphanage Jan us head matron un the home and also founded ut l asked Jan uf she heard anythung about the airplane crash near Sioux Center Iowa She told me that the pu'ot Ronald Voordeman and the stewardess Berdena Kempers saved all the passengers aboard I then walked to the other end of the deck and who dud I see but Ruth Van Velzen another old classmate As I walked up to her I notuced that she was wearing such a stunning dress so I asked her where she purchased ut She told me that Betty Vant Hof famous dress desugner had designed it especially for her During the course of our conversation Ruth told me that she was reading a very good love story Love Me or Leave Me the author beung Mary Lou Vander Meer who also us the author of the book Ten Lessons un Love After walking around a but I went dawn to dinner Stanley told me that he had hired a superb cook who was Gilbert De Goeu He had studied cooking un France and knew many new dishes Seated on my rught was Marlene Lubbers she told me that she had un the United States My how proud she looked when she saud that She also told me that Leone Berkenpas us the waitress on the ship Leone had resigned at Joe s Lunch and Stanley employed her on the Good Fortune Stanley who was seated at my left told me that he had purchased his meat from Kenneth McMurray s Super Meat Market whuch is situated un New York While un New York he by chance had met an old friend Donald Groen who had just been giving his brothers children a uoy rude un his l96l Ford After dinner we all retured to the lounge and there a splendid puano team entertained us You might be interested to know that they were some more classmates of ours namely Joyce Schuuteman and Greta Haverhals They are famous pianists who travel all over the world After listening for a while I retured to my room I notuced that my room was equupped wuth a televusuon set I tumed ut on lust in time to listen to the untervuews of the ten top baseball stars of today Among them was Wayne Bruunsma who us the pttcher for the Yankees and is the highest paud player on the team After the untervuews the news highlights of the week came on A flash had lust come in telling about the bug electrical storm un Iowa The Harskamp cattle farm had lost IOUJ cattle due to the storm The owners were Donald Harskamp and Bernard Rozeboom Donald s brother un law Also the purebred horse form lost a number of horses I was surprised to hear that Marilyn and Vuolet Kuyper Wulmina Schuuteman and Emogene Vant Hul were the owners of the farm The announcer saud that it was the buggest horse farm un the United States so they seem to have a very thriving buSun6SS 18 The next morning I rose early and as I was strolling along the deck I notuced two more passengers on the deck who evidently had rusen early also As I walked up to them I was surprised to see Audrey Vande Berg and Joan Pruns l asked them what brought them on deck so early From them l learned that Audrey had been proctuc ing swimming because she planned to swim the English Channel Joan was her manager this year having swum the English Channel herself the year before After our Iuttle chat we all went down to the dining hall and there who did we meet but Roger Den Hefder and Dwoine Muulenberg from whom I learned that they were aboard ship an their way to Japan to teach the Japanese improved methods of farming Soon after I received the morning maul and among ut was on announce ment stating that Mr and Mrs Pete Vonk were the happy parents of triplets Iyou remember Mrs Vonk as the former Donna De Leeuwl I hurrred over to tell Janice when I ran unto Kathleen Clevermga I asked her what she was doing aboard the ship and she told me that she was goung on a trip to Hawaii with her boss Alvin Mos for whom she is secretary Alvin is the president of the Grammar Books Company l thought to myself probably Alvin can throw more books out of the window now Stanley then came and told us that we were nearing land and that we should get our belongings together The ship docked un the harbor a few minutes later As the passengers were coming down the plank I spued a famuluar face and who should ut be but Herlon Vander S haaf offering free puneapples to all the passengers aboard I later learned that he owns about one half of the pineapple farms un Hawaii We then hired a taxi to take us around the Cuty I then saw that the driver was Harold Klein He took us around the city and showed us some interesting parts First he took as to Scott Snellers grass farm so I asked Harold what Scott dud wuth the grass that he grew He told me that it was for grass skirts that the Hula gurls wore Scott not only grew the grass but also trade the skirts for the gurls He then took me to the De Boom Medical Research Center Asl was goung inside I met Betty De Boom the founder of the institution She saud that she was un a hurry because she had just found a cure for the mumps which wull be of a great help to many people Yau.u may remember she had the mumps when she was tn school which was the reason for starting up the institution A few days later we set saul again for New York As I CII!! aboard I notuced ten very ancient looking pianos beung pushed aboard the ship The man who was supervising the whole procedure seerred vaguely famuluar so I decided to investigate As I walked toward htm l recognized hum at once as Monsueur Davud Vander Berg the fatmus puano tuner and collector of antique pianos That evening I met some more of my old classmates Two of them were the famed novelust Arthur De Jang and his secretory Evelyn Lammers Art had been to Hawaii to write a book titled Gravitational Effects of the Midnught Sun an Hawaiian Climate' Evelyn told me ut was a very interesting book and She saud it would be the best seller of the year As l was talking to Art Madene Winterfield came and uouned the conversation She saud she was going back to the States for the first tume un ten years She had been lf! Hawaii all that time teochung Hawauuan gurls to dence the Hula dlruce Next I met Gerald Wussink and his handy man Donald Ter Hoar They had gone to Hawaii to sketch models for Vogue Magazin. Gerald us the designer for Vogue and Donald is the edutor He asked me if I met Howard Schutt on board already Howard had told Gerald that he had gone to Hawauu to see how the men dressed un Hawaii Howard had been named the best dressed man of the year and also us the edutor of Man the latest magazine exclusively for men Thenextdaywedockedun NewYork Aslgotoffthegong plank I saw Mrs Gene Moss formerly Marla Van Roekel I went over to her and she told me she was at the dock to greet her children who had gone to Hawaii for their sprung vacation She sand that die was celebrattng her fifteenth wedding anniversary that mmth. We've produced a cheerleader, swell basketball players, a debater, as well as hav- ing oodles of us in mixed chorus, glee clubs, band, small groups, Pep Clubs, and F.H.A. Our committee on recreation has done a good job. We had a happy time initiating the freshman boys into our organization. Even the Green Hands had a good time. Then we had our FHA and FFA party a bit later in the year. There were games and stunts for all. A few of the boys put their mind to it and made up a fine lunch for the group. The lunch was so good the girls complimented them. This year our local Veterinarians are awarding the senior boy in agriculture with the highest scholas- tic rating a twenty-five dollar bond. We feel any boy who is willing to work and who has the ability to attain the best grades in our group should be given an award. 51 DEBATE T 1' Jamce Vermeer Carol Veencamp Eva Mouw M1kellMouw M.rs Hammer Dxrector The members of the debate team th1s year were Jamce Vermeer Eva Mouw Carol Veencarnp and Mlkell Mouw Carol and Eva partzcxpated 1n debate for the fxrst nme thxs year The toplc for debate was Resolved That all Amerlcan c1t1zens should be subJect to conscnptxon for essentxal servxce rn txme of war Jamce and Carol made up the affzrmatwe team and Mzkell and Eva the negatxve team On February 18 the Sloux Center debaters were hosts to a cxroup of debaters from Western Chnstxan Hlgh School at Hull Two debates were held at thls t1me ln front of the student body A full season for debate was planned wxth contests set up to be held at Hawarden Emmetsburg and Orange Clty but the season was brought to an abrupt halt when Carol was xmured an a tobog gan accxdent The Sxoux Center debate has membershxp mn the Iowa Forsemcs League and the Iowa State Hlgh School Speech Assocxanon TERPRETI E RE DI G This year Mxkell Mouw partxczpated mn the prelxmznary speech contest held 1n Sxoux Center on February I2 and won the only fxrst ot nme contestants 1n mterpretxve readxng She also went to contests in Orange Cxty and Humboldt 52 J n I Q A ff' N 5 A v lt 4 C X rf M , ' AX FORUM Eva Mouw M1kel1Mouw Mark DeRuyter Mrs Hammer director The members of the WNAX forum thls year were Eva Mouw Mtkell Mouw and Mark De Huyter The question whlch the panel members discussed was We the students of Sioux Center Hlgh School take the four freedoms too much for granted The forum was dxfferent from last year Ln that last year they had four speakers and an alter nate and thts year they had three speakers and an alternate The alternate was Vernon Kahl On February 5 the manager of WNAX a moderator and an expert recorder came to Sloux Cen ter to record a half hour program of the speeches of the panel members with questlons from the student body Thxs recordmg was broadcast on February 15 In Aprxl the members returned to Sioux Cxty to attend the Spnng Workshop SPEECHES Thts year the Amerxcan Government Class agam partxcxpated tn the Te Paske Contest for whtch semors had to wnte speeches on the Constltutxon of the United States. This year we decided to have complete outfits and at the first pep meeting appeared in navy blue gabardine jumpers, crisp white blouses with wide on the back of the jumpers were em- blems like white megaphones, trimmed in orange with the letters SCHS on them. Once every week we gave a stunt at the pep meetings. Some of the favorites were: The race of the cars. A mag- ician at the circus, and the Three Little Pigs. At one of the pep meetings the teachers gave a stunt abount Ferdinand the Bull. Everyone thought Mr. Sneller made a very charming princess. Membership is secured by having a certain number of lines in a play, and also for participation in WNAX forum and debate. A membership fee is paid in the spring. This entitles the mem- bers to a subscription to the organization magazine Dramatics besides being put on the National roll. Regular monthly meetings were held. At the first meeting officers were chosen. Jan was chosen president: Marjorie, vice-president: and Howard, secretary-treasurer. At the beginning ot the year the senior members initiated the junior members into the society. For the informal initiation the junior members had to wear two different kinds of stockings and wear their clothes inside out. They also had to carry the senior members books around for them. For the formal initiation, the senior members gave the iunior members a party at Jan's house. The party consisted of a supper, and formal initiation ceremony and games. The year ended with the iunior members giving the senior members a farewell party. -1 1 1 Q L ' 't ' ,..
