Once a year the tedium of learning the A-B-Cs gives way to celebrating the traditions and innovations of Homecoming. From the sound of the 8:30 bell on Monday morning until the strains of the last melody at the Victory Dance at midnight on Friday, excitement prevades the air. This year Twirp Week set the scene for the show-off in everyone. Duck tails, pony tails, bobby sox and leather jackets of Fifties Day gave way to blue jeans and boots on Western Day. A sea of maroon and white on Spirit Day became a wave of somber black on Mourn the Trojans Day. Picture Day kept everyone waiting in line for a mirror and a turn in front of the camera. And the sophomores showed the other classes how to decorate a hall expertly. Pick-ups loaded with scavengers scoured the town for legal i?j timber for the big bon- fire. As the motley pile of burnables climbed, so did the spirit at SHS. Then, alas, an arsonist's match fused the mass leaving a smoldering pile of rubble. Their accumulation was burned up, but so was the student body! An all-out effort was made, and at the appointed hour never was a bigger or better bonfire lit to spark courage in the hearts of the Pirates and delight in the hearts of their supporters. Formals, flowers and football! The big night had arrived and while the battling Pirates pre- pared to meet the enemy, the Homecoming Court took the field to crown The Queen. Ten- sion became tears as Debbie Nino donned the royal robe and tiara and accepted the arm bou- quet or red roses. Although the game score was not larger on the home side of the scoreboard, the Pirates did not leave the field dispirited. The enthusi- astic support of the band, pep squad, and drill team cheered them to the dressing room unbowed. The Homecoming Dance bade farewell to yet another observance of long established customs. As students and exes straggled out by twos, the doors of Sinton High School closed on the last faint notes of the band and on Homecoming '79, for it would be no more. In its place will be Homecoming '80. activities-11 brollers junk food addicts. Men said, as they saw its beauty, lt shall never know decay, Great is thy skill, O Builder! Thy fame shall endure for ayeff A Teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite care, Planning each arch with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing efforts, None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the Teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the Builder's temple, Crumpled into the dust, Low lies each stately pillar, Food forconsuming rust. But the temple the Teacher builded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful unseen temple Was a child's immortal soul. The Treasure Chest Edited by Charles L. Anticipation and excitement prevailed among her passengers which included the fourteen most popular boys and girls of SHS. The moment had arrived for the highlight of the evening-the announcement of Mr. and Miss SHS. A fanfare blared, confetti filled the air, and into the spotlight stepped Seniors Lisa Butler and Rudy Alafa. The applause that filled the room indicated the great popularity of these favorites And the four year history of this pair indi- cates why they were chosen. Lisa Butler's charm, beauty and personality have won her many honors-San Patricio A84H Show Queen, Senior Class Favorite, Press and Camera Club Sweetheart, and Homecoming Duchess. She was a Varsity Cheerleader for two years. As a fresh- man and sophomore she served as class secretary. During her junior year she was elected to National Honor Society and was a Student Council member as a Senior. Rudy Alafa is a well-known and personable student. He is a dedicated athlete having lettered two years in football and hav- ing been named to the Second Team All-District Team his junior year. He also lettered in track three years. The Class of '80 selected him as Class Favorite during his freshman and junior years. The student body chose him as a school favorite during his sophomore and junior years. At the end of each school year, the squad chooses the future cheerleaders. The Pep Squad attends all football games and pep rallies. During these pep rallies they also sponsor the class competi- tion. They decorate the halls for the football games and supply paint and paper for the other clubs and organi- zations to also decorate. At the end of the football season they host a party for the football players. To raise money for their projects, in February they sell carnations for Valentines.
