Such is this document. Its pages are replete with the activities and accomplishments of the students at Sinton High School. They represent the exuberance and excitement that will always belong to you. While this annual is contemporaneously exciting, I believe that you will discover it to be a valuable keepsake that provides 'Il 'l d l h and relive 1978-79 at everlasting enjoyment. At some distant time when your eyes again touch these pages, you wi smi e an aug h S h l I ' obabl onl then that you will come to the realization that time is the coin of life and should be spent Sinton Hig c oo . t is pr y y carefully. It is probably only then that the significance of your time at Sinton High School will be understood. An American author, Charles Varle, had these comments to make about education: Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress-no crime destroy-no enemy alienate-no despotism ' W' h t it what is enslave. At home, a friend, abroad, an introduction, in solitude, solace, and in society, an ornament. it ou , man ?-a splendid slave, a reasoning savage. Please allow me this forum to extend my personal best wishes to you and your family as you reach out together and touch the future. For you have yet infinite dreams to be dreamt, castles to be built, and outstanding accomplishments to be acknowledged. Sincerely, f ff -YD f' I ff X , ,I M L, . Wayne Blevins, Ed.D. Ass't. Superintendent C.C. Shu humate For his thirty-three years of service in our school system, Mr. Shumate has our sincere appreciation. Through his work as a teacher of business courses in Sinton High School and his work as assistant superintendent, Mr. Shumate has shown an admirable dedication and conscientious fulfillment of his duties. He is a true professional in the field of education, May his years of retire- ment be filled with numerous hours of enjoyment as he pursues his many vaxriednand w?hDl:.Ee interestjy lg M007 WM i vi? i 4, Y ,cya J xp wily I Rjflilpill MQ, Maw V WWW W tl W7 li lJJQ,llflQMi'l M U , V u ,O J, School Board f rte r rs Left to Right-Front-Rose Brinkoeter, Epifanio Paz-President, Touchstone, Gerald Hellums, Arnold S. May. Having successfully piloted SHS into smooth waters, except for a stray sand bar here and there, Mr. May has opted for an unspeci- fied tour of shore duty and an R and Rn stint as assistant superintendent. And so in july, it is yo-ho-ho and away we go for Mr. May. During his twenty-two years of service in the SISD, Mr. May has sacrificed uncounted hours, innumerable B.T.U.ls of energy, and 1.75 pounds C7945 gramsj of hair for the well being of the district. Mr. May served for a time as a classroom teacher in junior high as well as a principal at Austin Elementary. Discovering high school administration was a gravy train and, anyway, wanting to use his B.S. training in animal husbandry, Mr. May opted to become high school principal when the present building was opened. In spite of an almost endless chain of irate parents, disturbed pupils, and grumpy staff members fa state of affairs unavoidably attached to the principal's titlej Mr. May has never lost the ability to lower the boom in a friendly fashion C unless it is necessary, in which case he lowers the BOOM!,,j. Mr. May's door has always been open to pupils and teachers alike-a condition which has led to confusion on occasion when he has tried to discover who walked off with his fresh ball-point pen. In spite of it all, Mr. May has invariably dealt with pupils and staff like a real gentleman. Having decided to lay aside the supervision of teachers, pupils, and other educational types, Mr. May can look forward to super- vising bus schedules, budget requests and all kinds of other good stuff. The unfounded rumor that Mr. May is leaving SHS to star in a remake of the Kojak television series is sheer nonsense-a short mini-series maybe-but not a full series. At any rate, pupils and staff of SHS wish Mr. May well in his new position. While the anchor may have been dragging occasion- ally and the sails have been set at half mast at times, Mr. May kept the galleon afloat-and that has been no mean task. It is time for a heartfelt salute to the captain as he sails happily off into the sunset. Good luck, Mr. May, and Thanks for it all. Thanks are due Counselor Ray Ferguson for this tribute. X Ass't. J ' .?Ll'- S Retirin Teacher: Dorothy Niemann When the 1978-1979 school term ends, Mrs. Dorothy Niemann will join the members of the class of '79 in celebrating the end of a long-term formal relationship with Sinton High School. Known far-and-wide as an insidious purveyor of Anglo-Saxon dialect, rhetoric, and literatti, Mrs. Niemann has decided to hang up her grade book and red pens to enjoy a prolonged and well-earned recess. Twenty-five of her thirty-one years of teaching have been at Sinton High School. Mrs. Niemann has now decided enough-is enough and is ready to take on new enterprises. While Mrs. Niemann has been secretive about her future plans, there seems little reason to credit the idle rumor that she plans a new career as a bull fiddle player with a popular country-rock group out of Nash- ville, However, speculation is rife that Mrs. Niemann plans to publish a country-rock ballad entitled Your Last Fling Was Flung When You Flang Your Frisbee At My Heartf' Rumor also indicates Mrs. Niemann has been working on two masterpieces of dramatic art entitled King Snear and Hamlet Meets Mack Bath. Mrs. Niemann began her teaching career in September of 1958 at Sodville School. While many less hardy leaders washed out, Dot' liy Houser-alias Dorothy Niemann, endured to leave her imprint on untold generations of Sintonites as well as on one told group of pupils in Gregory Portland ISD. The rather tacky rumor that Mrs. Niemann was teaching in Gettysburg and made Lin' toln submit a pencil copy of his speech before it was delivered has no foundation in fact. Be that as it may, Mrs. Niemannis departure will leave a real vacuum at SHS. It will be difficult indeed to find another lady to fill her shoes f Size 7Db. Actually, the SISD will have a real chore ahead in deciding upon a replacement that can look so very genteel and yet still torture seniors in English IV unmercifully. Whether correcting wall scrawls for errors in syntax or applying lip-rouge in public, Mrs. Niemann executes her duties with a style and flair that it will be difficult to match. In spite of it all, the student body and staff of SHS wish Mrs. Niemann well in her position as a lady of leisure. And while we are at it, we would also like to thank Mrs. Niemann for the gallons of red ink she has used correcting papers as well as all those years of loving concern and genuine dedication. Ronnie holds on for Rudy,s dear life. l The Pirate football team had a tough season, losing many close and dis- l appointing games to teams such as Tuloso and Gregory-Portland. The l game against Gregory-Portland was much closer than the final score indi- l cated. The Pirates played Portland a better game than any team in the dis- 1 trict or bi-district. ' The '78 football team was one of the hardest hitting teams in years. With players such as Andy Chica and Rudy Alafa at running backs and linemen such as Ronnie Alonzo, Ronnie Saldana, Keith Maxwell and Den- nis Chafin the Pirates had an explosive offense, led by junior quarterback Mario Moreno. I The defense was one of the best in the district. At one time, in the mid- dle of the season, they were at the top of the ratings. The defense was led by Gary Gonzales and Kevin Wahl. Safeties Richard Gonzales and Rudy Alafa performed excellently in the secondary. Injuries probably contributed most to the Pirates' poor record. At one time the Pirates had five men in or entering a hospital. Considering this, the Pirates had a good season.. 121 , K fit s t X . 4, lg ' 'X Q, Q j , LLL, xc V I A .x,..Q:. Coach Don Tuttle Gary Gonzales Richard Ggnzales N etters Have Rough Year The varsity basketball team had a successful year despite their 14- 17 record. The Pirates, picked to finish last in league play, ended in 7th place in a field of 9 teams. They pushed the top 5 teams to the limits, only to lose in the last minute of play at least 6 times and twice in overtime. The Pirates had an impressive record in tournament play. They finished second in each of the following: Aransas Pass Tourney, Rockport's Toast of the Coast Tournament, and the Sinton Invita- tional Tourney. David Kennedy was selected all- tourney once, and David Hutchins was selected all-tourney at all three contests. The Piratels most impressive win of the season was over Taft, ranked 12th in state in class ZA. The squad was led this year by David Hutchins, the second lead- ing scorer in 15-3A. He averaged 17.1. points a game and was selected 1st team all-district. Richard Gonzales, who averaged 8 points a game, was selected honorable-mention all-district. Charles Salone led in rebounds with an average of 8 per game. David Hutch- ins led the team in assists with 126: in steals: and in free throws, hitting 7196 of his shots, He scored the most points in a game with 32 points against Beeville, Charles Salone grabbed the most rebounds in a game, 20 against Beeville. The Pirates came from behind 5 times at the half, to pull out vic- tories in non-district play. Their highest offensive showing was 80 points scored against George West. The Pirates averaged 50 points and 37 rebounds, 15 turnovers, and 11 steals per game. This year's squad graduated 7 of its 8 players: David Hutchins, Richard Gonzales, Mark Luedke, David Kennedy, Gary Gonzales, Michael Dragoo, and Mark janota. The biggest problem for the Pirates was their lack of scoring because of poor shooting: they hit only 52W of free throws and 35W of field goals. Because they aver- aged only 5'9W per player, lack of height hurt them in the rebounding department. The Pirates were coached by Don Tuttle, 138 Gary and Ramon attempt to sky for the ball. 3- W!
