EISENHOWER OR CIVICS CLASS IN ASSEMBLY On November 4, when the rest of the nation went to the polls to select the next president, Sinton High students also voted, and to help the students make their choice the Civics class sponsored by Mr. Dickerson prepared a debate. Jeannine Gerdes led the Republicans in their plea to clean house with Ike and Dick while David Graham and his team of Democrats contended that you never had it so good. In the forty-five minute program both parties pleaded, begged, and threatened dire results if their particular candidate were not elected. They even staged a few stunts and when the Demo- crats formed a bread and soup line with the sign Do You Want This To Happen Again , it brought down the house. Not to be outdone, the Republican s included jingles between each speech and even brought a bucket of mud on stage evidently representing the present Democrat Administration. During the debate, literature for both sides was circulated around the audience while on stage large pic- tures and signs made the placelook like a political rally, except that it included material for both sides. Long before the debate, the Civics class went to work and put up signs, cartoons, and posters all over the campus and largely due to them We Like Ike and Vote for Stevenson became a major part of campus chatter. One Poster which drew much attention was a large color reproduction of a Donkey and Elephant in a bicycle race with the caption Ahead By A Nose. It would be impossible to say who won the Debate. However, winning was not the goal -it was education- a good education on current events for both debaters and listeners. DEMOCRATS WIN IN

STEVENSON??? DEBATES The day following the debate found everyone ready o vote and 205 students found time to stop in the cafe- eria and cast their ballot. H Even though the votes had no real value the students waited eagerly for the results. Jnlike Texas and the rest of the United States San 'atricio County and Sinton High stayed Democratic and he high schoolers elected Adlai Stevenson and his run- ning mate Sparkman 108 to 97. The election was sponsored by the journalism lass andjournalism students kept the polls during their tudy halls. Aiding the Civics class in their efforts to educate he voters the Pirate , which was decidedly Democra- ic, kept up a string of editorials and feature stories everal weeks before the election, and when the results rere announced it was the top staff members who yelled he loudest. .However they were pretty quiet the next day fhen national returns came in, and it was easy to pick ut a Republican by the big grin on his face.
