William Earl Leiby was inducted into the United States Army on June 15, 1953. He attended Sinking Spring Grade School and High School. Known more for his athletic ability, this easy-going classmate was also very artisticg Bill was on the championship I -V basketball team of 1950-1951. He was also one of the county's best catchers leading the league in batting in 1951. So here is - wishing lots of success to a young man who well deserves it, X -A -1 -....,. aft4e6!444agl754 It is a beautiful Friday afternoon in May, 1964, exactly ten years after the gradua- tion of the class of 1954 from S. S. H, S. The scene is a beautiful Southern plantation- type house in Kentucky, the home of Richard Caldwell, famous dance band leader. Richard and his band became famous when his band appeared in a motion picture re- cently. Speaking of that picture, Carol Haughney, who is known to her fans as Carol Scott, stars in the picture. Carol is first to arrive with Elsie Unger, who has been chief hair- dresser at M. G. M in Hollywood for five years. The private parking lot on the plantation is filling up fast, when what do we see but a bright blue 1964 Lincoln come tearing up the winding driveway, sounding its horn all the way. That could be no one else but Jack Leiby. Jack drove down from New York where he is one of the richest stock-brokers on Wall Street. Accompanying Jack is Wil- bur Love, head of the chemistry department of DuPont Laboratories, Next to pull up in front of the mansion is Admiral Harry Kring, the youngest admiral in the history of the United States Navy. With Harry is Dorothy Stoudt, Washington correspondent for the NEW YORK TIMES. Dot had been a star reporter on the TIMES in New York until she was transferred to Washington soon after the elections last November. Harry and Dot have contact with one another frequently, so when Harry received his in- vitation, he asked Dot to come along to the reunion with him. Next to step out of a taxi is Mildred Heffner. Millie almost didn't make it, but at the last minute she found another airline hostess to trade flights with her. Next, we see Russel Rhoads and Raymond Pauley pull up to the house, They have just come from Philadelphia, where Russel was working on a special case for the Pennsyl- vania State Police, and where Ray Pauley has established himself as an outstanding pro- fessional basketball player. His team, the Philadelphia Warriors, won the national cham- pionship because of Raymond's record -breaking shooting. Stepping out of a taxi, next to arrive, is Clair Harting. In addition to his regular job as a laboratory technician, he is in charge of the West Reading Drum Corps, which has been winning all kinds of honors throughout the country. With him is Glenwood Heister, better known as Hink, Hink is still washing dishes for a living, but since he isn't married and doesn't own a car, he is able to save quite a bit of money, which he has been investing in all kinds of stocks. Right now, he owns quite a bit of stock in the Old Reading Brewery, He also has a controlling interest in a publishing firm which publishes pocket-size mysteries. Arriving a little later, is Harold Ted Webber. Ted was supposed to meet Russ and Ray in Chicago, but a pressing business engagement detained him. Ted took over his father's lumber business a few years after graduation. Ted has increased his business so that he now has ra chain of lumber yards extending from San Francisco to New York. As the class is sitting around in the den, reminiscing, the doorbell rings and a few minutes later, the butler announces Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sharrnan III. Sandra and Charles told the class they had left the children with their nurse. They have two children, a boy, Charles IV, and little Sandy, Sandra and Charles have been on 2 concert tour and have arranged their schedule so that they could be in Kentucky for the reunion. While the chattering goes on, the next classmate to be announced by the butler is Nancy Madeira. Nancy, after taking a legal secretarial course in. Philadelphia, became a private secretary to a famous lawyer, Janice Bixler, the next arrival, breezes into the room as though she is in a hurry. Bix tells the class she acquired the habit of rushing around while working in the big office building for the LADIES' HOME JOURNAL, where she writes short stories. The only break from the hurry, hurry atmosphere of the office is her week-ends and vaca- tions which she uses to work on a book she is writing. When asked whether she is alone, Janice replies that Audrey Betz is outside looking over Richard 's tennis courts. A short time later, Aud enters and after greeting every- one, goes into a discussion with Rich about the construction of the courts and the rackets and balls he uses. Audrey is a secretary for the Spalding Sporting Supplies, and has learned a great deal about the business. Everyone has arrived and has renewed friendships by the time the butler announces dinner served on the patio, overlooking the beautiful gardens surrounding the house. There is a full moon this evening, and a cool breeze blows over the one-time class- mates. Everyone feels wonderful after the lavish dinner, and many of them go back to talking over the good old days. A few couples start dancing to the soft music being played in the background. Because it isabeautiful evening, no one feels like breaking the spell caused by the beautiful house, soft music, and full moon, Finally, in the wee hours of the morning, the party breaks up and everyone retires to the rooms pro- vided for them by Richard, who is full of wonderful plans for the next day. Everyone goes to sleep full of anticipation for the next day's activities, promised by Richard to be just as much fun as the evening has been. Everyone in the class is unanimous in the dicision to have class reunions more often. - -Dorothy Stoud t V i i N i L-l.,,, We, the Seniors of Sinking Spring High School, being in sound body and mind leave this our first, last, and only Will and Testament. Zhu Waning Classmates, as we near the end of our high school days, let us pause and recall the past--the joyous moments, calamities and partings along the way. Let's start in 1942, when twenty anxious, bewildered children began on the first rung of the ladder of education. But let's go on because the next five years fled by with great rapidity. I'm sure if you'l1 wander back in the maze of memories, everyone will remember the great feeling of expectation at the end of sixth grade, What child doesn't look forward to the passing of classes, social events and study periods of Junior High School? Up another step of the ladder, we found ourselves in the seventh grade with Mrs. Lambert as our capable advisor. We elected Harold Webber as president of the class. His assistants were Audrey Betz, vice presidentg Dorothy Stoudt, secretaryg Raymond Pauley, assistant secretaryg and Carol Haughney and Glenwood Hiester, USO representa- tives, Our first social was a doggie roast which was held in the school gym because of rain, Boiled hotdogs were the center of attraction at this affair, which was really en- joyed by all, Later that year, a St. Valentine's Day party was held in our Homeroom. On the next rung of the ladder, we were in eighth grade with Mrs. Lambert again as our advisor. Harry Kring was elected to the presidency, the position he was to hold for the remaining five years of school. Other officers were: Harold Webber, vice presi- dentg Dorothy Stoudt, secretaryg and Audrey Betz and Charles Sharman, USO repre- sentatives. Two doggie roasts were held by the class that year, held at Green Valley Country Club and Egleman's Park respectively. The only official business of that year was the selection of class colors and class flower. After a great battle between sthe male and female members of the class, blue and gold were the colors chosen. The American Beauty Rose was named as the class flower. Another year and we got a step closer to our goal, For the third year in succession, Mrs. Lambert was named as our faculty advisor. The following officers were elected: president, Harry Kringg vice president, Russel Rhoads, secretary, Dorothy Stoudt, and USO representatives, Mildred Heffner and Raymond Pauley. Since there was much dissatisfaction over our class colors, they were changed to red and white, but keeping the American Beauty Rose as our class flower. Our first social activity, which by the way proved very successful, was the movie, Smoky, The annual class Halloween party was held in Heister's garage. Blinking of flashlights accompanied the smell of cider and crullers at this event. The chasing by the police finished this fun-packed evening. Junior Commencement soon rolled around, and we presented a short skit as the main part of graduation exercises. In September we returned to school to find that Mrs. Berger was honored with having our well-behaved class as a homeroom. The same officers were installed as the preceding year. Immediately we started using our privileges as Sophomores. The First business conducted was the choosing of class jackets. Fate' was again with us the night of our annual class movie, It Happens Every Spring, because we did realize a profit on it. Who will ever forget our first orchestra dance, Shamrock Capers ? It was the greatest success financially and socially in the history of our class. This year rolled around as our class continued having fun. We closed this year by having a swimming party, scheduled to be held at Hopewell Lake. But since this resort was over- crowded, we settled for swimming at the Tulley and a small doggie roast in Haughney's back yard, Despite the small attendance, a good time was had by all. 66444 Widffdfly Two more steps were now added to the ladder and we found ourselves Juniors. Mr. Manderbach was named as our advisor. Our officers were: president, Harry Kringg vice president, Raymond Pauleyg secretary, Dorothy Stoudtg and USO repre- sentatives, Mildred Heffner and Russel Rhoads. Our first activity this year was a movie, Broken Arrow, which proved profitable. I'm sure our class will never for- get our first hayride, Even the pouring down of raincouldn't stop our class from having fun. With the outstanding salesmanship in our class, Mr. Manderbach couldn't resist having us sell fruit cakes as our next project. This sale boosted our treasury con- siderably. This was the year when students began recognizing our outstanding abilities in sports, dramatics and music. This year, as last, we placed first in field day ac- tivities. Soon April rolled around, and Prom plans were being made. We were off to help make it a success. The Spring Coronation Ball, was held on May 22, and was enjoyed by all. One great step and we reached our long-awaited goal. The same officers as the preceding year were installed immediately. Our first money making project was the selling of charm bracelets, which served its purpose for making money. Soon after this, you saw hundreds of pictures flying around. This could only mean one thing ----yearbook preparations. A record dance was held for the opening of the yearbook campaign. Harry Kring was elected to fill the position of editor of the IMAGO, October soon rolled around, and we started selling Christmas cards, when again we were in financial luck. A donut sale also highlighted this great year. Surely no one will forget the vividness of our closing activities. The thrills and chills that ran through each one of us on Class Night. Our Senior Class play, Teen Time, will always be remembered by the class. Soon our class of eighteen turned solemn, and Baccalaureate Services soon came to be reality. How sacred this event proved to be to our always witty class. Many of our classmates looked forward to the night of Commencement--the end- ing, yet the beginning--the ending of having school activities as one group and the beginning of our planned futures. Yes, we had reached our present goal but have many more-important goals to fulfill. - - -C arol Haughney t N pk ,6-A . y qg5fg,.f .aff LOU ANN ROBERT VIV IAN HERBIE DOLORES JOE ' S VF ' 0 W ' 1 BARBARA BRUCE .
