The pictures of the friends and scenes of dear old Simpson shall stay with us forever, and we will be true to the ideal of friendship. The Echo claims to be nothing more than a hook of sentiment. Even the failures we sec recorded here shall inspire us in the future. On this day all the people from miles and miles around come to town to celebrate. In Hallston. this day is known as Turkey Trot Day For the la t thirty years, on Thanksgiving eve. turkeys, ducks, chickens, and balloons have been turned loose from the top of Hall’s big store t this store one may liny anything from .1 Lincoln car down to a paper of pins, and it has the reputation of Imjiiu- the largest store of its kind in the entire state. Everyone gathers in the street below, and, as the fowls are driven off one at a time, flashes and climbs from one place to another 11 order that In may capture one of the coveted fowls. Clouds of dust rose from the roads, and wagons liegan to apirear from all directions by four o'clock on the 25th of November, 1025. Every vehicle in the county seemed to Incoming into town. Many people were coming on foot. Among the first to arrive was a small hoy of ten. named Tom. He had never attended a Turkey Trot before, and had been looking forward to this one rVr months. Tom had come by himself and was prepared to have one grand time. During the morning he went through all of the -tores in town and spent what little money he had been able to bring with him. lie !Knight drinks and candy, never thinking that he might need real food. Suddenly he heard a voice calling. All right! (ir.t ready to catch your Thanksgiving Dinner! The eager crowd gathered in front of Hall's store. Torn ciimlied into a tree near the store. He was sure that one of the first fowls would fly right tut' his arms and that would be all there was to it. He waited about a half hour while the last group gathered around the store. At last Sol. the old negro who drove the birds out into the waiting crowds, appeared. The first of the Turkeys came right mto the tree with Tom. He knew that the big fat gobbler was made just for him. Tom could even taste that bird with delicious dressing, cranberries and all the other dainties that go with a Slio miff Thanksgiving dinner He climbed to where he could reach the goMtlcr and grabbed him by the tail feathers. Rut it was not the simple task that Tom had imagined. Quick as a flash the bird was gone and Tom was left with only a handful of feathers. He made his way around in the mob. seeing others more lucky than he. with their huge fowls. He happened to pass one of the booths where the ladies were selling apiwti iug chicken dinners, sandwiches, and pies of all kinds. He remembered that he was hungry, lie ran his hand- through his pockets and to his surprise and sorrow, found that he had spent his last nirkcl for a NTo count all-day sucker He tried to think of something else. But in his mind he could see only stuffed chicken, cranberry sauce, rosy apples, gleaming yellow oranges, snowy white creamed potatoes, juicy peach pics, indigestible mince pics, delicious pumpkin pics, grinning devil's-food cakes. « ft angel-food cake, and fat jolly dill pickles. He would have been thankful for even cheese and crackers then. Tom heard someone say that the last bird was about to be turned loose, lie thought. If I could ketch that bird maybe I could trade him for a pickle at least. This last bird was a little gray owl. It flew all over town before it finally settled on top of a tall telephone pole. D m c!iml� cd the pole as fast as lie could and seized the owl. He slid back to the ground, thinking. “Huh. nobody wants just a worthless old owl. But he decided to carry it home with him to remember the day. About this time a stranger railed Tom ami said Say kid. I'll give yer two bits fer that owl. Tom did not hesitate a moment. He grablied that quarter and dashed off to get that much longed for food. He spent the quarter for a pickle, a slice of devil's food cake, and a slice of pumpkin pie. Hr then started home, still hungry, but very well satisfied with his day until he heard a man say to his wife. I surely do wish I had caught that owl.
