All? DEPT HSL FOUR FOUR's Detachment 'TWO hit the deck plates running. Our goals, upon arrival were to set the standard for all future embarked air departtnents and to fully inte- grate ourselves as members ofthe SIMPSON team. We began our journey with a trip to the Sikorsky plant in Connecticut to witness the machining and building of the world's finest helicopter. The appreciation we gained from our visit served only to make us strive harder to preserve our aircraft and return them to the squadron in outstanding condition. We sailed to the Adriatic where we worked with the Italian Ship San Marco. Always alert to the training opportunities available we cross-decked some of our aircrew. LT Gor- don was reunited with old friends from flight school. lt is a small world. Next came an exercise in Saros Bay, Turkey where we practiced shallow water ASW. Our aircrews gained valuable experi- ence and obtained an impressive 38 hours contact time of 43 hours available. The ASW exercise concluded, we shore based in Naples. Italy, where we enjoyed some R8cR while completing aircrew training and aircraft maintenance. After a brief visit to Cannes, France SIMP- SON was chosen tojoin the USS AMERICA in UNISOM II!Continue Hope off the coast of Somalia. This part of the world was not on our itinerary but we met the challenge. When no one was looking, SIMPSON's men payed homage to King Neptune and earned their distinction as trusty SHELLBACKS. Finally, we were released and reported for duty in the Northern Red Sea where we con- ducted vessel boardings in support of United Nation sanctions against Iraq. Routine for others, but for us it was another opportunity to excel and we did. As we look back at everything we have seen and done while assigned to the SIMP- SON we have reason for a great deal ol' pride. We did indeed meet our goals. We have set a new, higher standard.
