Acts 26:17b, 18 In Dedication ,HQ Rev. Herman H. Hazleh Mr. Hazlefh Hundreds of Simpson students have profited from your instruction since 1942. We ioin them in expressing our admiration of your knowledge and appreciation of your excellent teaching and help as an advisor and friend. Your years of missionary service in Viet Nam provide a rich background for your classes, and your mission- ary vision inspires many of us to prepare to spread the Gospel light. You did much to complete the difficult task of moving Simpson Bible College from Seattle to San Francisco in 1955. As senior member of our faculty and former academic dean, you have helped a great deal in raising the academic level of our school. In your new role as vice-president, you 'are continuing to contribute to its advancement. In acknowledgment and recognition of your faithful service, teaching, and Christian testimony, we, the stu- dents of Simpson Bible College, dedicate to you The Gateway of 1961. Administration OOO For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. ll Cor. 4:6 :'fi'sfA:- ,1 .,7,, ', , -:1 X , .. rf- -- zu - ., V av SQ: , .' Allen We are an enlightened people. Our modern way of life which is the envy of our world is the result of the enlightenment of mind and emancipation of will which came to the shores of Europe through the preaching of the gospel almost two thousand years ago. Paul preached Christ the Light of the world, and in the wake of that preaching were laid the foundations of western society. What a vast debt we owe to the continents of Asia and Africa, the one the birthplace, the other the refuge, of that Light proclaimed by Paul! These continents, once favored, are now the dark areas of earth. Their people, sleeping for centuries, are now recognizing the dawn of a new day and are demanding their share of the good life enioyed bythe West. If we ever thought we could enjoy our good things to ourselves, that day is past. The Light that brought us our salvation and all its social, economic, and political by-products must be re- flected back to them that they, too, may live. Our GATEWAY is dedicated this year to the spreading of the light. So are the young men and women whose faces you will be seeing in the succeeding pages. Their numbers must increase if the light is to be spread fast enough and far enough. Pray their efforts will not be too little and too late! -Paul S. Allen, President Standing: W. W. Homan, F. M. Stanley J. Vandegnft In grateful memory we dedicate this page to Stanley J. Vandegrift, a graduate of the class of 1960. Stan went to be with the Lord on November 25, 1960, as the result of automobile accident. As a student at Simpson, he was a member of Chi Alpha Omega Honor Society, and upon graduation was chosen to membership in Delta Epsilon Chi Honor Society. His sincere Christian testimony was a blessing and inspiration to faculty and fellow students. As a most promising young pastor, Stan took up the work of a church in Gardena, California, in June, 1960, with determination, ability, and purpose. Our hearts have been stirred to help fill this gap in the ranks of the ministry. N Renanah Choir RUSSELL J. The light of civilization is eliminating the darkness of illiteracy, primi- tive methods, and nakedness. But one darkness yet remains - and shall remain - unless a Light greater than civilization takes away its dead- ening powers. That darkness is sin in African hearts. The story is being repeated over and over again as per- secution runs rampant and Christians count the cost of their faith. Clemmer How privileged the Simpson family has been this year to send forth some of its members to minister in foreign lands. We wish to express our great apprecia- tion to these, who have been a blessing to us. To Rev. and Mrs. Raymond M. Clemmer, who are now returning to the Philippines, we give our heartfelt thanks for what they have meant to our student body. Mr. Clemmer has shown great ability as a business manager here and has been a definite asset to our school in financial management. Mrs. Clemmer, a member of the senior class, has been a source of inspiration to all in her persevering and determined spirit in learning music to teach students at Ebenezer. To Miss Ruth Ruhl, who has been the school recep- tionist, and is now ministering to the refugees of China, we send our appreciation - for the great patience and friendliness she displayed, and for her help given in these past years. Gus Marwieh, who graduated three years ago, has been a frequent and delightful visitor in our halls every year. We shall always thank God for this one from Liberia, who was so friendly and was a spiritual challenge to all. He, who carried such a burden for his African people, has now returned to them. May God's blessing and our prayers attend each of these as they go forth to turn hearts from darkness to light, that the peoples of the world may receive for- giveness of sins and a glorious inheritance through Jesus Christ our Lord. Charlotte Quick, Robert Skillman, Buddhism Islam The theme of this year's Pioneer Mission Trails was The Night Cometh. Three of the speakers emphasized that, as we have been forewarned that the night would come when no man could work, even so Buddhism, Islam and Com- munism are presently striving to stamp out the light of Christianity. Th-e fourth speaker challenged the audience to go and preach the Gospel before the night comes.
